I lived in Denver for several years. You people have this chip on your shoulder like the world revolves around you. You can keep your thunderstorms, hail storms, dust storms, cracked windshields, crumbling roads, 2 lane bypass that charges 2 dollars every 5 miles, stuck up rude snobs, mile high hicks, overpriced housing, incompetent and SLOW drivers, speed traps, rodeo's, wanna be gangsters, bums on every corner, cracked skin and lips, brown clouds, ugly women, John Denver, John Elway, good ol' boy mentality, 3.2 beer, graffitti, airport built in the prairie, congestion, can't time street lights, -20 degree wind chill, tornado warnings, sky high insurance, hit and runs on a daily basis, stupid little six flags filled with little cholo's, backwards radio stations, clunker cars, 90mph wind, dead nightlife (unless you include Lodo on Friday night with 10 dollar drinks and cutoff time at 1am), can't plow your streets after a simple winter storm, ...............................etc.

thunderstorms? hail storms? rude people? wannabe gangsters? tornado's? okay first of all denver gets over 3100 hours of sunshine a year, a lot more than any places in the midwest, northwest, or east coast. and there's rude people in every city, not just denver. go to LA and you dont think you'll find rude people? NYC has some of the rudest people on earth. good ol' boys? there's good ol' boys in california for god sake. theres that mentality everywhere in america in every state somewhere, especially in the south. overpriced housing? maybe in the richy rich parts but go to most areas in north denver, west denver, southwest denver and upper east denver and theres really cheap housing for rent. the average rental pric ein denver is like 700 dollars. you live in littleton, you wouldn't know the first thing about REAL DENVER. 90 MPH wind? you wouldnt know the first thing about wind. the southern rocky mtns usually blocks denver from harsh winds in the first place dumbass. yeah we have a brown cloud sometimes because so many people drive here so yes it gets smoggy sometimes but overall, we are very sunny here. and wannabe gangsters???? thats why denver has between 150-200 gangs with over 20,000 members and 40% of the murders in denver are gang-related. so yeah there all wannabes i guess. go to jefferson, north, west, lincoln, adams city, manual, montbello, aurora central, etc and the street gang members will show your ass whats up. so get the fuck outta denver then cuz this city doesn't want you. so take your ass back to where ever you came from. and denver is not a cowtown. if thats the case then salt lake, albuquerque, phoenix, etc are all cowtowns right??? your so full of shit. denver has a large minority population, mainly mexican americans. over 23% of the denver metro area is latino. and you sound like a racist calling all the mexicans in denver cholos. and denver snow melts very quickly, often before nightfall. so get your shit straight

Having lived here most of my life, I hate to say I agree to a great degree. There are good things here but there is a certain degree of smugness that can be overbearing. If Denver isn't a cow town some of its leaders certainly seem like they come from one. Blasphemy of blasphemies I do concede that John Elway, Peyton Manning, and The Broncos could vanish and I would shed no tears. Denver has improved tremendously but San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle are real cities. Denver, with all of its good qualities, just isn't in the same league.

Chris, I was seriously laughing at your headline because I agree with you! Denver is ONE BIG LAME COWTOWN! I've lived in L.A., Las Vegas, Chicago & Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda Florida (that stint was not MY choice). Denver is not a real city, is PAINFUL for single people, BORING cookie-cutter STUCK UP people, no one actually dresses up to go out. When you do, people stare at you like your naked. Denver wouldn't know style or sophistication if it smacked them in the face. Excuse me for liking to shave my legs and armpits! There is NO night life, staffing agencies are HORRID here! Randstad, Apple One, Volt - UNPROFESSIONAL and can suck it! Every last one of them! Screw you, Denver! I get the hell out of here in 17 days!

Pros: -Art is great here. A very progressive cradle to creative development -Fantastic music scene and always a show every night. David B Smith art gallery is amazing and every 1st Friday has several art walks (Santa Fe Art District is one of the most well known). -If you like drinking, the city's pretty much a bar town. Plus some great microbreweries. -Definitely a singles town, lots of dating opportunity. -If you're gay or even straight not familiar with the scene, there's a very comforting culture there. Pride fest is an great experience no matter what your preference is. -420 fest is also great if you smoke. It does start looking like an ex con gathering though (count the number of tear drop tattoos on peoples' faces). -Hiking is great, I would suggest El Durado Springs. Also great rock climbing. -A ton of culinary people there, some really good eats and interesting restaurants. -Skiing/Snowboarding is also great in the mountains (try anything in Summit County, bus system is free once you get there.) -Denver city is pretty small, walking across it takes no time at all. -Parks are all over and they're really fun to relax at. -Boulder's fun I guess. Round trip from Denver there is around 6 dollars (might have gone up). -Meet people that are new to Denver as well, you'll find exploring the city with someone else new is a great way to make some cool friends. Cons: -Slogan: "Go there for vacation, leave there on probation." -Three types of people: Alcoholics, Hood Rats, and Drug Addicts. (East Coast billboards say "Don't smoke cigarettes", Denver billboards say "Don't smoke Meth"). Well, I guess welcome to the Midwest. -A lot of locals seem piss poor and uneducated. -Most natives look down on transplants. -Texans. -Gangs, criminals, and a shit ton of homeless bums who harass you at all times. -Colfax Avenue. -16 Street Mall. -Areas surrounding Denver ban Pit bulls, and to my knowledge put them down after they take them from your home. -They tout liberalism, but are very conservative. -The front range is pretty dull, mountains are nice in the winter though. -Landlords are horrible, some of the slum areas are pretty cheap in a fratty-sort of way. Although bums came door to door there and you don't want to leave valuables outside. -Although there are some cool buskers on the streets, hood rats have no problem taking their hard earned money tips from them. -People who are taken advantaged are passive aggressive to the point they probably deserved to get robbed. -Police are crooked (that's everywhere else, though); A few incidences where police rammed into civilian cars comes to mind. -Mountain towns are cool if you like being around rich wiggers or if you like coke. -Drivers are pretty shitty, but the congestion there isn't as bad as some of the east coast -Purina Dog Food headquarters can waft over the city at times (unless you're into that.) Fun place to visit, live there for a couple years and see how you like it, but once you start feeling that it's not that great anymore, LEAVE RIGHT AWAY. Don't wait around for things to get better. Denver - 5/5/2013

Denver has some good points, but there are a lot of bad as well. The good points include the performing arts and the wide variety of restaurants. The bad points include all the pot-smoking liberals, who don't care about religion and want to live their own weird life styles. The cost of living is very high, the taxes are high, and the housing is ridiculously high. I'm trying to move out of this crazy city and nutty state of Colorado. It has really turned into a deeply liberal and non-religious place. Many people here hate God and hate those who believe in God.[read more...]

Forever optimist - 4/30/2013

After traveling the world I would have to say anyplace can be great if you make it so. I am always open to meeting new people and trying new things. I was born and raised in the suburbs of Denver so any negative opinions I have are related to "suburbia life" and now that I'm older I am not a fan of the soccer mom mentality that seems to be corrupting our youth and our originality. I have met some amazing people here; natives and transplants. There is a lot that the city has to offer and numerous outdoor activities. I am moving, shortly and my advice to anyone moving to Denver, or anyplace else is to own where you live, be proud, if you see a problem, don't complain but work to fix it. So many posts I have read make such broad generalizations. No one will ever be perfect but anyplace can be better if you make it so. If you are reading this with plans to move to Denver then visit, talk to people. Denver and Denver Metro Life (Suburbs) - 2/1/2013

The majority leaving comments -especially those who have been in this city more than 20 years are mostly right on. Being from Colorado for 24 years, half of it in the Springs and the other half in Denver,I have been fortunate enough to watch this town become a major city. I was around when I- 76 West just plain stopped at Pecos St. forget about driving up toward the mountains on that route. In saying that, the HIGHWAYS never caught up it the population growth. Denver had/has an awesome way about pouring it's funds into building up their major sports team and venues (I mean how many times was Mile High Stadium bought??)Regardless, there is only one major highway in Denver and it's called I-25. Note, this is Denver not all the unmarked Metro areas that should be referred to AS suburbs of Denver. But since the out growth of Denver happened too quickly the little pockets of towns got smooched together and all of the sudden people say they live in Denver even though they live in Englewood; It's more confusing than not. Denver's actual population is 600 thousand, it became liberal because of the younger population living in the city. Which gave Denver a needed birth. On the flip side, the city school's are poorly funded as is their health system (overall)and they are always working on highway construction. Also, I don't think the people are rude, there just seems to be a lot of determined shopaholics. Stay off the streets (ride the LR if you can) and you'll be home by 9 pm everyday. I have been living in the Denver Metro area for over 24 years, and feel that I can honestly give you the most accurate answer. Denver is a polluted, overpopulated,liberal,unfriendly, expensive, city. The traffic is horrible, the air quality is terrible and it gets worse everyday. Should I move to Seattle or Denver? - 12/20/2012

Single girl moving from the NYC region and I can't decide on Seattle or Denver. I don't mind the rain and I don't care much about the sun but I love to be active and spend time outdoors. I will be moving without a job and looking once I get there so being able to find a job easily is a big factor. Also, I am originally from Europe so I love meeting international people and I will be traveling a lot all over the West coast. Overall I am into a healthy lifestyle, with some spirituality on the side (yoga, meditation, inner peace) and I would love to get into a city with that type of vibe. Bad idea - 12/19/2012

My daughter Britt recently moved to Denver Colorado with her boyfriend .WE told her it was a bad idea...It took them 6 days to get there by car. It was freezing cold so she thought her new coat from Burlington would keep her warm, but was stolen the first day by a bum on the street. She thought she could get a job but no luck..She also became a bum on the street.She lived in a car that never moved because she did not know how to drive a stick shift. Denver metro area - 11/17/2012

I have lived in the Denver metro area for almost five years after living in other states. The Denver metro area as a whole is a completely depressing place. The town is completely sports obsessed and really has nothing else to offer. The restaurants and food are horrible compared to other metro areas such as San Francisco. The neighborhoods are ugly and cookie cutter, modern looking housing. Most of the so called neighborhoods are flat out UGLY! It is no wonder that Denver is one of the drunkest towns, it is DEPRESSING!! The summers are hot and dry! I hear this crap about how it is a "DRY HEAT" and I think what a load of crap. Have you tried sticking your head in an oven, which is a dry heat? IT IS HOT!! JUST AS BAD AS THE EAST COAST! Denver supposedly gets 300 days of sunshine per year but they never mention the subzero temperatures in Denver. We may not get much snow per year and only one or two big snowstorms per year but it is cold as hell in the winter especially in the mornings. Denver is the land of extremes as far as weather. Better Than Some Cities in Some Respects - 10/31/2012

Overall Denver, CO is OK. It is still a cow town, albeit one now all dressed up but really nowhere to go. The arts have been cultivated seriously over the last two decades and much of the city has been greatly improved. For me though, the amount of sun is excessive and the summers are getting really way too hot. Loved Denver area....... Lived there for 18 months, moved due to spouse new job in Los Angeles area... I grew up on the atlantic ocean in FLA, have lived in Las Vegas, Houston, Scottsdale,DENVER, and LA. By far, Denver has the most amazing scenery. Mile High Nightmare - 9/14/2012

Denver, CO stinks. The traffic is horrendous with the constant road work, the weather is as bipolar as a lot of the people who live here, the people act like animal/people lovers, but they're not. People are as rude and ignorant as ever and don't care about each other. If you don't fit a specific stereotype here you won't fit in. Not much of a choice for apartments here once you've seen them all. A lot of them have income requirements either high or low and yet this city had a ten year plan to end homelessness. Yeah right. Oh and forget finding a decent apartment for a decent price. If you pay over 700/month for an apartment it'll still not be worth it. If you spend anything under that, you'll have to deal with bed bugs and cockroaches and management who don't care and a city and state that's on their side. We're talking about a city that cares more about legalizing pot than stopping human trafficking, child abuse, animal abuse or anything else that would actually make the world a better place. To them, Colorado already is the best place. This is a city whose most recent solution to the homeless problem is kicking them out of the streets. Like they have anywhere else to go. Duh! After spending most of my life here I have not one friend I can count on in an emergency. Nobody cares if I live or die. Nobody would care if I got fired from my job because my car broke down. Watch a horror movie instead - 8/31/2012

The downtown area of Denver feels like the set of a Stephen King movie. Denver exhibits a strange oxymoron of a metro area/ghost town. It exudes a certain feeling of being "lost" and this feeling creeps down into your soul as you walk around. Don’t believe the hype. There is no cosmopolitan feel here. Unless you are moving here from Price, Utah. I've lived here for a month. I can see why people stay inside their homes and get really, really high. They have to lose themselves in fantasy - take themselves out of reality in order to survive. I regret moving here... not to mention the fact that their is an obvious paradigm of patriarchy. BEST place to live - 7/17/2012

I am shocked that people on here are bashing Denver. Anyone who says Denver is not clean, has clearly not been to a big city before. I have family in Chicago, San Francisco, DC, and Raleigh, and Denver is significantly cleaner than any of these cities. It is a great place for 20-30 somethings because there is always so much going on. One thing people always ask you when you meet them is "where are you from" because there are so many transplants here. The reason is because one person moves here, and all their friends follow. Every major sports team is here, a million breweries, the mountains are an hour away, lakes to boat at are an hour away ( you can boat on some lakes in Denver, but they're small). The weather is for the most part nice- there are hot and cold streaks in the summer, but nothing like the midwest or East Coast. I honestly can't imagine what anyone would not like about Denver. I will say, coming from Chicago, you do realize what a small city Denver is comparatively, but that to me makes it a lot more manageable as well, and it has all the perks of a big city minus insane traffic. There's no place like hell. - 7/13/2012

I have had the misfortune of living in this terrible state for 14 years. I moved here from Ireland, and let me tell you was that a mistake. I'll try to keep this short. Colorado is a hideous state, in order to find some place livable you must be willing to pay millions. I live in Lakewood, just about twenty minutes from Denver, and everything here SUCKS. I have a daughter with Down Syndrome that the state would probably rather not live, they do nothing to take care of her needs. Schooling is TERRIBLE, the kids are terrible, the teachers are comprised of many alcoholics and people who quit caring about their job years ago. I don't get why so many people love this terrible, terrible place. The capital city, Denver is a GHETTO. Once you get past 16th street mall the place is HELL. Capital hill is filthy, and most of the city is overrun with homeless people. In it's defense many people say "Denver is a large city, with that it will have homeless people", Okay, that still does not explain the DILAPIDATED structures throughout the city. The place is falling to hell, everything is old (and not in that cute historic yet tended to way like Ireland) and falling apart. The PEOPLE, now that's entirely new thing. The people here are HORRIBLE. They are mean, and many of them are addicted to drugs of some form or another. Majorly uneducated, cold hearted and with an evil spirit about them. They drive terribly. If you like LA, you'll like Denver - 7/10/2012

If you are coming for the mountains or the "Rocky Mountain High" try Boulder or Colorado Springs. They are beautiful. If you are in Denver, it's like being in east LA looking eastward toward the mountains far far away in the distance...that's the mountains of Denver. You don't really notice them unless you make it a point to look. If you like a sprawling city that you have to drive everywhere, like LA, then you've got it in Denver..without quite the traffic...just give it 10 more years. It's expensive here..NYC or Denver...close to same cost...hmmm...NYC hands down...you can walk, things happening...life all around you. Here, life all around you from a car. Not to mention the dirt that sticks to you feet - yes they get black if you wear sandals and you have to wash them when you get home, yuck. The pluses..friendly people, that's nice, nice parks and people use them in droves (thousands fill the parks on holidays), lots of dogs, trendy neighborhoods, nice restaurants. But everyone is behind fences! Where's the "green" in environment it boast of? In pollution...auto. They need to stop sprawling and focus inward like Portland did, or the city will be LA in 10 years.[read more...]

Do some research - 6/27/2012

I relocated to Denver in 2006 and promptly left in 2008. Having done some research into crime about the area before moving there, I quickly realized Denver is a big city prone to violence. Denver has a gang problem. I worked in armed and unarmed security while there and saw instances of violence and theft that was very concerning. Latino gangs, black gangs are very prevelent there in Denver and Aurora as well. Some areas are nice but there are pockets of neighborhoods prone to criminal activity. I would highly suggest you visit the areas of metro Denver before committing to moving there.[read more...]

I love Denver! - 4/7/2012

First of all, I would like to say that I am glad that all those people who talk poorly of Denver have chosen to move elsewhere. We don't need you and your negativity here! I have lived in Denver, CO for 12 years and I enjoy living here very much. I disagree with the person who said that the drivers are very aggressive here. I find that the drivers here are mostly good. Yes, there are some bad apples, but they are probably from the East coast ; ) I have traveled to East coast twice and I was appalled at the aggressiveness of the drivers there especially in Washington D.C. (constant honking) and I almost got run over by an idiot driver in Boston, MA. The climate in Denver is pretty good. We get all four seasons. It is usually not too cold in the winter and not too terribly hot in the summer. I don't know what the person was talking about when he talked about 100+ degree weather. We get that maybe 1-2 days a year. In July and August, it's usually about 90 degrees. Also, it is dry here, so it doesn't feel as cold in the winter or as hot in the summer compared to the places that have high humidity. Also, since you are at an elevation of one mile, you are exposed to more UV radiation than at the sea level, so wear sunscreen. This is one drawback to living in CO for me since I get sunburned easily. Denver is great if you love sunny weather and doing fun outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, going to the park (we have so many!), etc. There are many free hiking places close to Denver. I have traveled to quite a few cities in the U.S. and Denver is by far my favorite. The only other place that I have visited and would consider moving to is Portland, OR. I would love to spend the rest of my life in Denver, but since I am working toward a graduate degree in a field that is already saturated in CO, I may have to relocate for work. I was told that most people who attend my graduate program want to stay and work in Denver, even if they are from another state. People are refusing to go back to their home state because they love Denver too much! That in itself says something.[read more...]
