I rented in the historic district of Anaheim off Lemon St, a few blocks north of Pearson Park. I loved, loved the neighborhood and character of these old homes. $1800/mo for a 2br, 1 ba, 1800 sq feet, wrap-around porch, shed, ample back and front yard, not inclusive (paid water only). No AC but washer/dryer hookups. Kitchen had been updated. Expensive, but it was in one of the best neighborhoods of Anaheim. Was it worth it? Comparatively, CA is just ridiculous so I thought it was a pretty good deal, but it still strained the budget. But that's CA for you.
I loved that neighborhood. The original Northgate, Mexican grocery store was around the corner. Anaheim's clubbing experience at Ember, dive bars and late night taqueria dining off Anaheim Blvd as well. If you wanted a more main stream grocery shopping experience, Albertsons two more blocks down with a Starbucks. Disneyland, Anaheim Gardenwalk, The Block a 5 min drive South with the 5 freeway. 5 mins north, Fullerton nightlife, dining and shopping complexes as well as the 91 Fwy. Downtown Anaheim, with food, lifestyle boutiques, post office, CVS, UPS, utilities and ice rink was a block or so down. I loved, loved all the conveniences. Your standard ice cream truck came around 3pm. The Mexican soft serve ice cream, nacho truck came around 5pm. There was a tamale guy every weekend. A churro lady every so often. And corn/chicharone guys easily found everyday. Every Thursday the Farmer's market, which I love. Walmart and Target 5 mins West. The Orange Mall and downtown Orange, Mainplace Mall to the East about 10-15 mins.
Kid, family, dog, cat friendly neighborhood.
This will not be everyone's experience of Anaheim, because the rest of Anaheim is kind of eh. But I found a rare opening in a good niche and PAID for it.

| Theme parks - 2/1/2013
No hateful comments from me at all !!! I love California for the theme parks. Knotts Berry, 6 Flags Magic Mountain, Disney Land, California Disneyland Greater America. It would be great to do a review on the best States for theme parks. Anaheim is never boring, lots to do and see. Excellent value and customer service is amazing. I love this place. (Have yet to try Cedar point in OHIO.)

| Quality of Life - 11/21/2012
Anaheim is in the heart of Orange County, CA. It has easy access to numerous freeways thus providing easy access to all of Southern California. Anaheim hosts Disneyland and many other attractive destinations. The city is less than half hour from the nearest beach, and less than two hours from mountain resorts. I live two block from Disneyland and their is many things to do very near by and short driving distances. The traffic on the street is not too heavy but near by freeways are, especially during work traffic. The weather is great, usually in the 70's and 80's. Most people that live around here seem to be on the go and busy. Many things to do if you have the time, energy and money.[read more...]

I have lived on Orange County since 1973. The business climate has gone from sleepy to dynamic. It is an exciting place to live and work. As I get older I am exploring other place to live that are less expensive and congested.

| City of Anaheim, CA - 6/21/2007
Hi There!
I live in the city of Anaheim and it's definitely a tourist town. I live within minutes of several tourist attractions such as Knott's Berry Far, Soak City, and Disneyland. I'm conveniently close to the Anaheim Stadium and the ice hockey rink where the Angels and Ducks play. Love attending these events! The weather is always sunny and bright and the beach is just within 15 minutes away. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to come live in Southern California.

| Quality of life? What's that? - 5/30/2007
I have lived in California all my life and while I've visited other states I never had the desire to leave until now. I have 2 small daughters and live in a very upscale neighborhood in Anaheim Hills. I'm leaving before they become self centered and materialistic like the rest of this county. I could afford to stay but the lifestyle I want to live will always cause me to have to hustle and work more than one job. There are so many better places where you can get more for your money. We are moving to Austin, TX and we have a condo on the beach in San Diego for the summers. We can retire out there and actually live a good life. I'm out.[read more...]

| Not the Happiest Place on Earth - 12/2/2006
Real estate in Anaheim is ridiculous, I don't know how the average person can ever manage to buy a 1st home, plus the cost of living here is outrageous. I retired in March and have come to the conclusion I along with a lot of others will have to be leaving to survive. Even before retiring I struggled to make ends meet. I was lucky enough to buy a condo (at the so-called righ time in 1999) otherwise I don't know what I would have done. A couple friends I have rent and the rent alone is terrible. The cost of living in Orange County is really terrible, and it's getting worse as the populations in every city is growing. There are very few vacant lots left to develop (and many of those that currently are have future plans already made), so the demand is spurning an incredible increase in price.
I bought a three-bedroom 1950s "fixer upper" in Fullerton (1,258 sq ft) with my now ex-husband for $480,000. Our mortgage was $2,780 a month. When he and I seperated about two years later, I went on a quest to find another place. One-bedroom apartments in most of North Orange County (Anaheim, Fullerton, Santa Ana) are between $1,000-$1,300, an "affordable" alternative to beach and South OC cities that can range from $1,500-$1,900.
I ended up finding a two-bedroom detached duplex unit for $1,300 a month in the Colony area of Anaheim. This area is known today for Craftsman-style architecture of neighborhood homes. There are several beautiful parks, City Hall, the Anaheim library and shopping within a two-mile radius. However, ten years ago the area was ridden with crime - the effects of which are still present depending on what side of Anaheim Blvd. or Lincoln (two major streets) you live on. These areas are poorly maintained, offer less housing choices- mostly small apartments, and are marked with a very high saturation of Mexican immigrants (common throughout most of O.C., but Anaheim and Santa Ana are especially known for this).
It's this contrast that's common throughout most of Orange County. You're either in the ghetto or in a nice area. It's hard to find a middle ground. The so-called middle class neighborhood (such as the one where the Fullerton home was purchased) is not practically obtainable by most classified as middle class. As a college-educated working professional making decent money, it's hard for me to make ends meet on what I earn.
Many jobs that are available are offered at wages comparable to the rest of the country; the illusion that Orange County has more jobs and pays more is a lie. Sure, there are people who can make good money (and most of them work in Orange County real estate), but by and large, one cannot afford a good quality of life without making some serious sacrifices.
Traffic really as BAD as everyone says. My last job was in Irvine- an 18 mile commute from Anaheim, but required up to two HOURS in transit during rush hour. I'm now exactly 6 miles from work, 15-20 minutes via city streets, and it still wears on m[read more...]

Ahhh. Anaheim Hills. A nice place to live if you bought a house here at least 8 years ago. Housing prices have tripled in that time. The area has older homes with no association fees and a glut of cracker boxes with gestapo-like association managers. The roar of the 91 fwy is a given and along with rail road traffic at all hours of the night it is not all that pleasant. If there is a parcel of land that has not been developed it is because the cliffs in the area are too unstable during the rains. Traffic is getting worse due to all the new housing. My kids are in college now and as soon as the last one graduates I am taking my equity and getting the heck out of town.[read more...]
