| Parks are Beautiful, but it can get hot - 7/24/2011
I moved here three years ago and still have not found one friend. It is difficult to find friends in this city. If you are young and have children and grow with your children through sports and the school system, then you have a good chance making friends through them. If you work you can make friends through your job. As an older adult (55+) and you move here later in life, then so sorry - all the friends are taken. You can try church, but only once a month is about all you will see these so called friends for a dinner or an outing. Or maybe once a week while entering or leaving the church. If you like the solitude, then it might be ideal for you. It is hot during the summer months ( 90 +). I'm used to a cooler climate. Maybe in time I will adjust to this different way of life. People tend to have their lives all set and seem not to want to make anymore friends. I won't saw people aren't friendly. They are very friendly and will help you if you need help and the parks are beautiful.[read more...]

| High Costs of Living Here - 7/20/2009
Livermore is a medium sized city near the Bay Area of California and has a lot of the smaller town charm; however, like everything in this area, the cost of living is very high. Everything from groceries to housing is more expensive than in other places I have lived. I'm hoping to leave here soon and find a less expensive place to live (I'm retired now) and also with more precipitation as I would like to see some green instead of California's brown barren hills and valleys.[read more...]

| A Family Friendly City - 5/3/2009
I have lived in Livermore, CA for 3 years and worked there for 17 years. It is a modern, family friendly city, and I cannot more highly recommend it. I enjoy the wonderful parks system, and the varied opportunities they present. From soccer fields and swimming pools, to hiking trails and picnic areas... it is all there.[read more...]

| Which wine would you like with that? - 9/5/2008
Livermore is 80,000 people at the east end of a valley. There are no adjacent towns to the north, south, or east. The hills are visible from every direction. There are 30 wineries in town and grape vines everywhere, sometimes within housing developments. The wineries have free tastings with many open 7 days a week. The main city festivals are based upon wine - "Art in the Vineyard", "Honey and Wine Festival".
Livermore is the only place in the country with 2 nuclear weapons labs but it also means lots of people with PhD's live here.
Downtown has been completely redone including a free parking garage downtown next to the 800 seat theatre that opened in 2007.
Parks are constantly expanding. Bike trails link the park system and there are bike lanes on the main streets.
Livermore is part of the larger San Francisco-San Jose-Oakland area. The closest bay area train station is a 15 minute drive. Downtown San Francisco is 45 minutes away. Napa is an hour drive.
Since Livermore is at the end of the valley, there is abundant wildlife including hawks, mountain lions and eagles.
There is an interesting mix of people -- PhD scientists, wine makers, ranchers, and Silicon valley commuters.
The housing is expensive but we are talking San Francisco, not Detroit.

| A great spectrum of opportunities - 9/4/2008
Livermore has about 80,000 people. It's located at the end of a valley. There are no adjacent towns to the north, south, or east. The hills can be seen from all directions. There are 30 wineries in Livermore and almost all of them have free wine tastings every day. There are vineyards everywhere - sometimes within housing developments.
Most of the local festivals have related to wine - "Art in the vineyard", "Wine and Honey Festival". The park system is constantly growing in size. There are lots of bike trails through the parks and bike lanes on the main streets. The
downtown has been completely redone with large water fountains and a new large free parking garage downtown next to the 800 seat theater that opened in 2007. City leadership is progressive and responsive to the citizens.
The largest winery here is Wente. They run a very deluxe restaurant with an outdoor summer concert series with artists like Boz Scaggs, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and Foreigner performing for 1500 people enjoying their wine.
The golf course next to the restaurant is on the PGA tour.
There are urban growth limits which preserve the view of the hills to the north of town.
Livermore is the only city in the country with 2 nuclear weapons labs. But don't worry much. They don't build bombs here but they do have Plutonium. A positive effect of the labs is the very large number of PhDs living here.
The Altamont Hills are to the east of the city and it is home to one of the largest windmill farms in the country.
The BART train stop is a 15 minute drive. BART is the main bay area transit system connecting San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland.
Livermore is part of the greater San Francisco-San Jose-Oakland area.

| Fantastic place to live!!! - 8/6/2008
I've lived in the midwest for ten years, my wife is from western PA, my best man is from NY, NY, lived in the middle east, traveled in europe extensively for one year, lived in Southern California, honeymooned in PEI, Canada, studied in Mexico and lived there.
Crossed the country four times by car.
My point? I've seen and lived in a lot of places.
I really like Livermore. Expensive? That's relative! Expensive relative to the rest of the U.S. undeniable. Relative to LA or the San Francisco Bay area? No.
I like being in the middle of vineyards and cows but only 45 minutes by Bay Area Rapid Transit to one of the prettiest metropolitian cities in the world, San Francisco. 2.5 hrs. to Sierra Nevada extreme vertical drop skiing, or beaches. 30 minutes from 2000 miles of navigatible delta waterways where the water is warm and like glass for waterskiing.
Livermore has, not quite metro quality restaurants but very acceptable, diverse and reasonably priced cuisine and a great european style downtown street cafe atmosphere.
Performing arts 1,500 seat theater to be built. 500 seat already in existence. Two movie theaters (one 2 screen the other 10 screen state of the art sound) in a friendly cooperative non-competing movie showing.
City with a surplus budget, Schools that are well managed.
Very kid and pet friendly, waterbowels on the main street for dogs, closed off main street for Halloween for kids to TRICK OR TREAT.
It's quiet, low crime, safe to walk at night, low key town that's old by California standards, pre-Gold Rush days, est. 1700's by Spaniards and 1800's by German and Danish immigrants.
Livermore had 11 National Merit Scholar HS students last year.
Weather is beautiful, lots of sunny days even in the winter, not humid but it gets dry hot in the summer. No snow. 3-5X a year 20 degrees F.
I like it here and expect to retire here. Hope you'l come and visit and do some wine tasting at one of the 4 dozen vintners.

| Livermore, California - 7/17/2006
I really love living in Livermore. It has a small-town feel and a unique personality derived in part from a diverse population that includes cowboys and physicists who not only live side by side but are sometimes the same person. Livermore has a thriving art community and a new wine-growing identity. It has lots of educational opportunities, with a junior college in town, two state universities nearby, and satellite campuses of UC campuses and several other institutions also nearby. The drawbacks are the high summer temperatures, the high cost of housing, and the smog (the valley that makes the city so charming also traps smog). I am looking for somewhere less expensive to live when I fully retire, but I find I want a place that still has the elements I love about Livermore.[read more...]
