| Sunny Isles North Miami Beach - 1/29/2011
Just the other day I was talking to a lady at Starbucks. Last year around this time their were many more people. Traffic was heavier, restaurants fuller.. etc
Sunny Isles Beach is one of the nices beaches in North Miami. But economy has made a significant impact. Now you can look at it two ways I suppose. I my self like it! Rents and mortgages are cheaper. Take the apartment I live in for instance. www.IntracoastalYachtclub.com just check the place out. It's likely that you will find a great deal here. What was once a place you could only move into after being on a waiting list is only at 80% occupancy! The old days of having to put down a few thousand for a deposit are gone. $199 deposit says the page! Its a steal.. This goes for many of the businesses around here. Foods cheaper, rents cheaper, deposits are cheaper.... But the beach is just as lovely as always! I hope it stays like this forever![read more...]

Although the Winter is great, the cultural activities are advancing and the Dining choices are endless, the traffic can be horrific.
Summer's are great if one has a pool or living waterside. All the Snowbirds are gone.
The population is as close as one can get to living in a foreign City but with all the advantages of Stateside living.[read more...]

| Crime - 3/24/2008
I think that the high scores for Miami Beach are overrated. While we do have our fair share of issues as in any tourist destination, I can reassure you that the Miami Beach Police Department are amongst the best in the country. I feel very safe in my city knowing that the police are very quick to respond and deal with any issues promptly.[read more...]

Miami Beach is a microcosm of America's immigration problem. It is a ppowerful magnet that attracts a broad swath of immigrants to a vibrant and dynamic area. Like Dade and Broward counties, it is a "minority-majority" locale where minority groups constitute the majority of the population, with a heavy emphasis on Hispanic. Our five year old daughter will be going to a school where the demographic is 63% Hispanic, 22% White, 13% Black, 2% Asian. Spanish is the predominant language, which can get tedious. Miami Beach is a pot, but the contents are not melting. The primary ethnic groups tend not to intermix; hence, they are not well blended. There is too much of an "us versus them" mentality as a result of the strong Hispanic influx, which paralyzes government and hampers social intermingling. Miami's heat (not the Basketball Team) can be oppressive and unrelenting, particularly beginning in June and lasting through November. The real estate prices have risen meteorically. A million dollars buys very little in a single family home. Traffic on Miami Beach is getting worse, which is a natural consequence of the over-building of condominiums, especially in South Beach. That said, there is a plethora of good quality and diverse restaurants on the Beach. Lincoln Road is an improved version of the Champs-Elysees, with an endless procession of humanity and cafes. The young have supplanted the elderly. There is a growing gay population; a hip-hop crowd; casually-dressed yuppies yearning to live the good life. All of this contributes to a dynamic "City." Clubs, bars, local hot spots all do well and stay open late. Samuel Johnson said if a man is bored with London, he is bored with life. That can be said about Miami Beach, although the cultural and intellectual life here is certainly wanting compared to London. Miami Beach is many things: It is more Latin than Anglo; more Northern than Southern; more wealthy than impecunious; more young than old; more international than american; more hot than warm; more rude than polite; more new money than old money; more situational ethics than traditional integrity, etc. On balance, it's an exciting place to live.[read more...]

| Third World - 4/25/2006
I study Native American sign language- it is fascinating. Their history all together is fascinating, all of the U.S. citizens should be required to study more of it. I think most Floridians, South Florida residents, problems reside in the fact that most inhabitants in Miami refuse to learn English. When flying flags- certain people fly their countries flag, not ours. I think naturally citizens of the United States get upset because they wonder why fly their flag when they are angy at our country? No one has to be here I believe. When I lived in Italy, it was considered rude to not learn the language and culture. My grandma was an immigrant and had to go through rigorous history lessons to pass her test to become a U.S. Citizen, whereas today it is much less difficult. People do not try here to learn English, and have lived here for decades. Instead of them learning, U.S. citizens are being chastised for not being bi-lingual. It is definitely interesting to say the least.[read more...]

| South Beach ex-fan - 4/25/2006
I moved to South Beach in 1994, when it was a truly a "community". The transformation that has taken place in the last 7 years has been herrendous. Some call it progress: the takeover of small family owned shops and restaurants by national chains and staple stores; the endless party and convention venues that bring individuals to do nothing but disrespect the city and it's citizens, which in the end cost us in tax money to clean up, protect and even restore; exaggerated costs of living; overplanning and zoning for a population that doesn't exist locally; etc. etc. Miami Beach is not what it used to be.... I miss the retired citizens who established a sense of community, with respect and authenticity. But you can't move back time, so it's time I leave this place to the people that migrate for search of "progress". Think twice about what that means to you... because you won't find a positive change here![read more...]

| Native language? - 2/23/2006
Don't forget that the U.S. was created by immigrants. Our native language should technically be Indian. I have still not met an "American" whose ancestors weren't from another country. I lived in Miami for almost 10 years. The climate is beautiful, most people are very nice (rude people live everywhere!!) and there are tons of things to do. Don't bash this city because it's different. Why do you think it's one of the top vacation spots in the U.S.? Miami rocks!!
