"A beautiful city, but much corruption and crime"

A beautiful city, but much corruption and crime - 11/30/2010

I'm looking to move out of Chicago after living here my whole life. I agree with Tiger...there is much segregation and a lot of the city is going down. Many great attractions and a vibrant nightlife, but you if go a few blocks in the wrong direction it's gang infested. Even nicer neighborhoods have plenty of crime. I think the main problem is the city is overcrowded. You also see a sad cycle of people having child after child in the streets & raising them within gangs, poverty, etc. I'm just tired of it. It's a shame too because it really could be a great place to live.

I guess it depends what you're looking for. Downtown, North Loop, West Loop(to some extent) are really nice, but very expensive. Everything surrounding is patchy at best. Bucktown/Wicker park has a great selection of bars/restaurants/theater, but high crime rate as well. Most people I know have had their apts/homes broken into and a few have been robbed at gunpoint. It's not enough to simply say "well, just don't go into that part of town" because first off, that's not a remedy. Secondly, the "bad" part of town is growing quickly.

Those of you who don't see the violence/crime, you must have never ventured out into different areas of the city....take a ride to garfield park, (west) west town, pilsen, a lot of the south side. All of these areas have plenty to offer, but when you see gangs standing on the corner/streets complete with sporadic gunfire, you're completely missing out on what should be a great area. Even the area around midway airport is going downhill fast though Daley tries to impress visitors with...?? flowerbeds? Come on. I've seen entire neighborhoods turn into garbage with gangs, graffiti, crime boxes, homeless jumping on your windshield at every expressway exit. There's a red light camera at every other intersection so the city can make even more money, but we never see improvement as a result of increased revenue. Corruption is the norm.

Chicago suburbs are an entirely different story. Most are very nice to live in if you want a more quiet, family oriented lifestyle. You're looking at what should be a 15-30 minute commute to the city, but it's triple that because of the horrid traffic. Metra trains are nice, but stop running around midnight or so...

City public transpo is ok if you live near a train line. Buses are slow.

I feel sorry for people who own homes with the constant tax hikes (on everything).

Winters can be bitter, but it builds character (at least that's what I tell myself)

I know people from Chicago will have a fit when they read some of my negative comments. We will fiercely defend our city as if it cares....Believe me when I say I'm sad about it, but I've given up.

Aside from my negative comments, it is does have a lot to offer if you have some cash and you're able to find a safer area...maybe a secure building w/parking (prepare to pay extra). People are pretty friendly for a big city. I've frequently read/heard people are rude, but that has never been my experience. It's the kind of place where people will smile back, give you directions and maybe even buy you a beer. But then you turn the corner and some homeless guy robs you OR you have a ticket on your windshield for some bogus violation.

re: A beautiful city, but much corruption and crim - 12/8/2010
I do not understand what motivates these people to become so overwrought and melodramatic about The City of Chicago. Actually I have heard it all before and I think some of it at least politically motivated. Chicago is a huge city which covers about 235 square mile and has a population of almost 3 million. There are over 200 neighborhoods in the city which make up Chicago's 77 community areas. About 17 to 20 of these 77 areas have high rates of crime a few have very high rates of crime. There are however plenty of save areas in the Chicago. I have been familiar with the city for decades going back to the late sixties One needs this decades long perspective to make a valid judgement as to where the city is making progress or is not making progress toward becoming a better city. And can I tell you with certainty that the Chicago of today is a much improved city when compared with the Chicago of the past. In fact the United States Department of Justice keeps long term statistics on the crime rates of United States cities, so we do have to guess as to whether the crime rate is going up of coming down. For instance, we can look at the data and see that the violent crime rate in Chicago is one half of what it was 15 or 20 years ago. I can not think of a single occasion, that I have had to alter my plans because of the potential of a crime occurring. I have been to most of the biggest cities in the United States and I can say that Chicago compares favorable with all of them. In fact Chicago is a Global Class City of which the United states has three, LA, NYC & CHGO. Come to Chicago and see the city for yourself.

re: A beautiful city, but much corruption and crim - 12/24/2010
I have been reading several Chicago reviews here and some have mentioned crime and corruption. Everyone I know is aware Chicago has some bad and dangerous neighborhoods, just like many if not most United States cities. It is an American phenomenon not just a Chicago phenomenon. There are U.S. cities with higher crime rates than Chicago, there are cities such as Houston, Dallas, Miami, Indianapolis and etc. with crime rates similar to Chicago and there are cities with crime rates lower than Chicago. Geographically Chicago is a big city, many people just do not go to the areas with high rates of crime, they stay in the areas with relatively low rates of crime, so they are not exposed to the crime. Some reviews have made blanket statements about corruption and how pervasive it is or might be, is this just innuendo and hearsay, or do they have real hard evidence of this corruption?

Chicago not for the outdoor enthusiast - 4/12/2013

I have lived in Chicago my whole life. I am starting my research to move to another state for two main reasons... 1) the climate here is the absolute worst and 2) the cost of living is horrendous. If you like to be outdoors, Chicago is not the place for you. For 7 months a year, its freezing, windy, snowing and raining. The summer is so hot and muggy that you feel tired after being outside for 5 minutes. The only good month is October. If you love nature and like to be outside hiking, biking, swimming, etc., there is nothing here. No mountains, no forests, and the lake is freezing and really not swimmer friendly. There are a few lakes... So, i'm doing my research to find a better place to live. [read more...]

The old grey goose ain't what she used to be... - 3/31/2013

I've lived in Chicago all my life. I'm 53 years old. I grew up and was educated here. There was a saying when I was growing up that if you couldn't make it in Chicago, you couldn't make it any where. Well, you cannot say that now. Chicago has changed from a blue to a white collar town. If you are not making at least $100K, all you will be doing is existing. The costs of living has gone through the roof. Rents in decent areas are insance (you're going to need at least two or more roomates and good luck fitting them all into 650 sq. ft.). Crime has gone through the roof and is out of control. You're nickeled and dimed by the City on everything from parking fees, entertainment taxes, food tax, property taxes and any other tax that they can get away with. It has experienced negative population growth because it can no longer be comfortably afforded by the middler working class. The city is no place to raise children because of crime. You even have to watch your back going out in the day time. The "have nots" have gotten desperate for survival and have resorted to robbing, drugs and gangs are still prevailent, random shooting of children. You never have a sense of security. Winters are longer and colder and grayer (at least 6 mos). This is definitely not the Chicago that I grew up with. It does however still have great universities, summer events in the parks, great museums, clubs, restaurants, theater, etc....oh, but you won't have enough money left to do these things after paying rent or a mortgage anyway. Don't even think about living in a nice area in the City and having a car, you're asking for far too much and good luck on parking. Think you're escape the costs by moving to the burbs, think again, the burbs are not that much better as far as rents and mortgages. In a nut shell, it's a rat race.....and welcome to it if you decide to move here. [read more...]

High crime, really horrible winters,high obesity r - 1/28/2013

Just not for me. I have met some very wonderful people, but in general not the nicest city...and I've lived in several. This is the only city where men have flipped me off or yelled, f--- you out their car window b/c I'm not driving as fast as they want me to(and I always drive at least 5 mph over the speed limit). The skyline is pretty under the setting sun, and there are some nice parks, but this is the most aggressive city I have ever lived in. And the winters are brutal. Cost of living is extremely high. Really consider your lifestyle and what you want before moving here. [read more...]

Tons of Culture! - 11/26/2012

I have live in Chicago all of my life, and I have to say that in terms of cultural and social options, it ranks in the top 5 cities in the U.S. The night life, fine dining, museums, and of course Lake Michigan give you endless options each and every weekend! Chicago's lakefront and skyline is second to no other city on earth. The cons? Well, there are a few. The cost of living in or near downtown Chicago..gas, food, shopping, rentals, property taxes (and I wont even get into parking!!)...will cost you an arm and a leg. Crime in some parts of the city is pretty bad. It really boils down your income. Many people chose to live in the suburbs, but most of the jobs are downtown. The city school system is sub par compared to many suburban systems. If you make more than $100K a year, you can live comfortably some areas south and west of downtown. [read more...]

My Town, Chicago - 11/17/2012

My husband and I have lived in Chicago for over 5 years. I always like to describe Chicago to others as having all the amenities and conveniences of a big city with a small town charm. There are so many things to see and do in the city, but it's not like NYC that seems to never sleep. You have everything from museums, zoos, theater, shopping, sports, restaurants, pubs, bars, etc. There are also many parks and of course the beaches along the lake. Chicago is absolutely amazing in the summer with events going on daily downtown and throughout the neighborhoods like music festivals, food festivals, art festivals, even free dancing classes, movies in the parks, etc. So much to do, you can't ever be bored. Another exciting even is the annual Air & Water Show. The week prior there is so much anticipation downtown as you hear the jets training for the weekend performance. The sound of the jets flying between the skyscrapers is a unique experience. There are also several sports teams including the Bears, Bulls, Black Hawks, Cubs, White Sox. Of course there is a big rivalry here between the Cubs and the Sox, but all in good fun. Chicago has lots of culture and diversity. I can't even imagine how many countries must be represented here. That is something I love about this city. There are also so many diverse neighborhoods, some that may be dominated by a particular ethnicity, like Chinatown, Greektown, several other Hispanic, Asian, Polish, Indian, neighborhoods. But even there you can still find diversity. The many neighborhoods that surround downtown each have their own vibe and character. If you ever visit, be sure to explore some of the lively neighborhoods and don't just stay downtown. I have to mention, being an interior designer myself, this city has some of the most beautiful architecture. So many historical landmarks and buildings in the "White City." My favorite part of the city is by Wacker Drive which follows the river that breaks through downtown. I love how the river opens up the view here and enables you to see the surrounding buildings from riverfront to the top floors. As most other cities, you don't get this experience when the buildings are jammed together where your best view is from the sidewalk across the street. Almost forgot, the public transportation system in the city is great. They have an expansive system for buses, subway train (referred to as the "EL"), and METRA train. I think the majority of the city commutes by public transportation, and it's not just for "low income" as it may be in other cities. You will find well dressed men and women in their work suits on the trains and buses. Also, there are many bikers. The city has done well in developing bike routes and bike lanes on major roads and always working to expand these. Though in a city where the winters are so cold, you have those they call "fair weather bikers" and those like my husband that ride everyday, rain or shine, snow or ice, 90 degrees or 5 degrees outside. Because of the large amount of bike riders, many public office buildings do have indoor bike rooms to lock up your bike for the day. Now, on the other hand, what I don't like about Chicago is the long cold winters, expenses, and government corruption. I grew up in VA and my husband in Africa, so naturally we prefer warmer weather. You do have relatively nice falls and springs here, but the winters are just too long and too much for us. In my opinion "winter" is from October to May. During Oct./Nov. you can get some random nice days in the 70s or 60s, but for the most part will be in the 50s, 40s, and 30s. You can even get snow in October, thankfully we missed that this year. With the exception of the blizzard in 2010, the last couple winters have been "mild" as far as weather and snowfall. I can remember in 2008 & 2009 it felt like it snowed every 2 to 3 days for months. Because it never got above freezing, and in some neighborhoods they are not so good about salting the sidewalks, I can remember snow packing on top of snow where it was 6" to a foot thick and it just kept icing over. Not fun when you're walking to the bus/train to and from work. The temperature can also get into the negatives sometimes or a days "high" could be 10 degrees. Don't forget you're in the Windy City so there's always the wind chill factor which makes it feel about 10 degrees colder than it actually is. When we're coming out of winter, we joke around that "You know the winter's bad when the high is 30 degrees and you are looking forward to the "warm" day." Also, most neighborhoods have street parking, so be ready to shovel out your car and don't be surprised when someone steals the spot you spent hours shoveling. I've never seen people use lawn chairs as parking spot savers until I experienced a winter here. So, be ready to love the snow! Of course, being a big city, Chicago is fairly expensive. Not as high as NYC, but probably right behind it. Housing is expensive and if you want a little bit of land you'll need to move to the suburbs for it. Taxes are high. Property tax very high. I've heard several times on the news that we have the most expensive gas prices in the country. Utilities, groceries, rent, parking, all expensive. Chicago has a history with corruption in government and politics. I'm sure you've heard about Governor Blagojevich. Enough said. I'm sure you can do research on the corruption in the city. Safety. Yes, Chicago also has a history with the Mafia and gangs. You will hear about murders, violence and theft weekly on the news. Though, I would say that extreme violence and murders are kept to certain underprivileged neighborhoods. I've lived in several neighborhoods in the city and never had any issues. Though, even in the better neighborhoods, car break-ins are very frequent for street parking. I would say I see automobile glass on the street at least once a week. Just be smart. Don't leave anything of value or that could seem like it might hold something of value visible in your car and you won't have a problem. As long as I've lived, I've kept my car clean of extra junk, never leaving bags, or valuables and have never had a break-in. There you have it the pros and cons for Chicago, aka Chi-town, The Windy City, The White City. Though we plan to move for warmer climates, I know we won't find another city that compares to this amazing city. [read more...]

Most Beautiful City I've lived - 6/5/2012

I've been very lucky to live in numerous places both here in the U.S. and also in England. Chicago has got to be one of the most fun, entertaining, cultural, fantastic water front, school system, etc. I can't number them all. Every town has it's problem areas and Chicago is not different than the rest. I myself have no problem staying away from those specific areas and I don't feel as if I'm missing anything because of it. Public transportation is great (sold my car). Unfortunately, I am being transferred to Louisville, Ky. for one year to work for the Norton Medical Group and would appreciate any help concerning that issue.[read more...]

Chicago is great - 4/19/2012

That is all a lie. Chicagoans are in fact quite friendly for a huge city. And weather is fine in the months of May, June, Septmeber, October. And many people love hot summers in July and August! And there is miles and miles of beaches; who cares if it's on an ocean or not. What were you planning to do..drink the ocean water or something? It looks the same as an ocean beach when you are there so what does it matter? And Chicago beaches are clean, do your research. Santa Monica beaches in the Los Angeles metro area are dirty, and that's on an ocean. And Chicago, being a metro area of nearly 10 million people, has amenities that dozens upon dozens of other metro areas do not have, yet at a lower cost of living than living in New York or L.A. for those amenities. I've been to many cities around the country and Chicago is one of the best. In some ways even more desirable than NY because you get all the amenities without the price. In NY, you are just paying to say you live in New York, but you are not getting any more for your money. And just because you met someone that you felt has done you wrong is no reason, in my opinion, to dislike an entire city. Perhaps it was YOUR attitude or something you done to that person.[read more...]
