| All the cities in south Florida run together so it's hard to know what city you are in from West Palm Beach to South Miami. Plantation is OK. It's just west of Ft. Lauderdale. Crime isn't too bad. It's one of the better communities.
All of south Florida is sprawling and filled with strip shopping malls. Public transportation is pathetic because no one supports it and only the poor use it. The elementary schools in Plantation are OK but if you can afford to, you send your children to private schools. Florida has no income tax, therefore public services must be paid for by the property taxes and they are high. Insurance is also high because of the hurricanes. And the hurricanes are a big reason to not live here. Living for weeks without electicity is no fun. Truthfully, the ONLY good thing going for south Florida is the winter weather. Everything else sucks. Even if you like the ocean and the beach, property near the coast is sky high (one bedroom condos over half a million) and going to the beach is a pain in the neck with parking and crowds. I'm searching for a better place to retire. We've been here over 10 years and must stay a few more but I'm starting my search now.
