If I knew before I moved to the DC metropolitan area what I know now, I would have never moved to Maryland, especially Montgomery County. It is corrupt and mismanaged. The overall tax burden is high, and you get poor service and infrastructure in return.

Maryland: what to expect when nobody flushes the t - 3/1/2013

Liberal beyond all reality, corrupt and MD elected officials' favorite past time is laying awake at night ... figuring ways to spend YOUR money on others who refuse to work. Its just DC but, with one of the stars on the US Flag. [read more...]

cost of living - 9/3/2012

It is very expensive to live here although it is a fun place to live. There is a lot of traffic and regulations for everything. I think I would like a little more open space and room for my dogs to run off leash. They both have AKC obedience titles and listen well. I live in a community about 7 miles from downtown Annapolis so there is lots to do. This is a destination place to live for sure but you really pay the price for living here. High taxes and this is a one party state so its like living in a dictatorship with no say in our government. [read more...]

IMHO - 8/24/2012

Like with everything else, whether you will enjoy the political environment of Maryland is highly dependant on your own political views. Maryland overall is very liberal. Generally is batched with DC and Ma.. That said, the southern counties of St Mary's, Charles, and Calvert are somewhat more conservative. Due to the population distribution of the state which determines local representation in the state government, three localities controls what passes and what doesn't. Those are Baltimore, Montgomery, and Prince George. I view the state as a Tax and Spend state which also enjoys passing legislation to control behaviours. This can be seen on the alcohol and cigarette taxes, no smoking laws, no using cell phone while driving laws, etc. [read more...]

MD is not the place we want to retire - 6/9/2012

We have lived in MD for more than 21 years. It has been a reasonable place to live and work during these years but going forward we realize it time to move. Our kids could not afford to buy homes in our communities and have moved to lower cost areas with better job opportunities, so despite having lots of friends still in the area, our roots are being pulled out of the area. In addition, the political and economic climate in MD are a serious concern. The liberal Democratic politicians are leading the state in a direction we disagree with. The dependence of the economy on federal government is viewed by many as a strength but that has its limits and downsides long term. It's time to get off this bus and get on another going where we want to be. Our focus now is finding a new destination.[read more...]

Vacation elsewhere in August - 2/24/2012

Summers in Maryland are uncomfortably warm and humid. It is estimated that over 800,000 residents if the greater DC area go on vacation during the month of August to escape the unbearable heat and humidity. It is very uncomfortable and we often stay indoors to avoid the exposure.[read more...]

I am not moving no matter what - 11/13/2010

Maryland is the entire country in one state. You have the mountains in Western Maryland; the beach on the eastern shore, high cost of living in central Maryland and high taxes, housing is expensive but Maryland has almost everything you could find elsewhere altogether. The Federal Government is a good neighbor to have and provides a tremendous economic engine for stability in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia as well. Maryland is not perfect but its a good place to live, work and vacation. I live in Laurel Maryland which is the center of everything.[read more...]

A wonderful, little state. - 11/3/2010

I have lived in Maryland for all but six months of my life and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I was born and raised here and though I've been all over the country and the world, Maryland will always be home. I love the fact that we have access to beautiful bodies of water AND gorgeous mountains...and it doesn't take long to get from one to the other. The way we prepare and eat seafood is unique and definitely a pleasant surprise for someone who is looking for food with a lot of flavor. Our nightlife is fantastic and we offer something for EVERYONE, yuppies and hipsters alike.[read more...]

In a word--Awful - 10/26/2010

There is nothing in Maryland you couldn't find in other states with friendlier people, lower taxes, lower crime, prettier cities and more scenic areas overall. People here are amazingly provincial, they act as if you're supposed to be impressed by Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay. Why ? Endless cookie cutter tract housing, terrible traffic, filthy neighborhoods. I just never could get why people made such a big deal about living here. The accent is the weirdest thing I've ever heard, like someone trying to talk with a mouthful of marbles. Everyone was so arrogant and self-impressed. I'm out of here at the end of the year anyway. The South has nicer people and weather and the west has nicer scenery. Avoid Maryland at all costs, the most important ones being your mental and physical well being ![read more...]

Beware: Marylanders are overrated; too Eastern, no - 8/24/2010

I've lived in Maryland over 5 years now, and despite the on-off economy, been very disappointed with it operates and treats people. Most residents appear to come from two places: Northeast states close to it(especially NY, NJ, PA), or foreign countries--both think and act as Maryland is the ONLY US state that exists--they seem unware of states west and south outside of it, except for their ocasional trip up straight to New York, or down to Florida or Myrtle Beach--and NO FURTHER! (I grew up in Texas, where people there are certainly geographically in-tune to all sections of America, not just the eastern seaboard. Residents appear to be wishy-washy phony liberal Democrats tending to instead support reserved, seemingly Virginia style (and they claim they HATE Virginia!) Republican-style standards--employers judge employees too much on those who act "Eastern" or wear only certain eastern style wardropes to work. Residents enjoy rudeness, using NY style obscenties to each other--they dislike anything friendly, exciting, new or orginal, or things done at all slower than city pace--Like Rip Van Winkles, they'll for something to work in nearby Virginia or up in New York City before its culturally or political acceptable at Annapolis (or nearby DC). They enjoy throwing cigarette butts outside of cars (you'll see piles of them at intersections!) and will STOP fot the longest time when a traffic light is GREEN--they love to honk their horns! Also, the taxes and skyrocketing living costs can affect oneself. Montgomery County, MD has the added pleasure of CONTROVERSY--putting HUNDREDS of speed cameras all over its roads, and give residents hard times about registering vehicles if these are not paid! Unless one has a good paying job already here, that one know can keep them here for several years, and willing to put up with the above bull, I suggest Americans finding another state to live in/move to.[read more...]

Wish they has listed all the above! - 7/31/2010

Don't move to Maryland! I've lived here all my 46 years and we're praying for a job transfer out of here! Maryland from an insiders view: higher taxes, bad roads, constant construction going on but nothing really accomplished, unless you have a major degree forget about making any money (No jobs here!), houses sitting empty everywhere,...The weather anymore is crazy! Last winter it snowed all the time. Big snows! Now this summer it has been HOT with no rain! We hope we can get our children away from this state before they get trapped. TIYE, If you move from NY...bypass Maryland! [read more...]
