Wilmette, IL

Wilmette, Illinois is a “North Shore” town in the New Trier Township school district. Great family town with lots of emphasis on resources for kids. Nationally top ranked public schools, numerous community churches, great parks with recreation programs, public library, large public lakefront park with swimming and sailing beaches are just a few attractions for families. Adjacent to Northwestern University and close to shopping and a wide variety of fine restaurants in Evanston. One on the closest suburban areas to Chicago with easy access to expressways, commuter trains and rapid transit lines as well as O'Hare A/P. Very low crime rate with virtually no violent crime. Good looking neighborhoods featuring green lawns, tree lined streets and interesting homes. Less desirable is the high cost of housing for the Chicago area. Compared to newer and further away suburbs, most of the homes are older on smaller lots with high realestate taxes, although this contributes in a positive way to Wilmette’s small neighborhood atmosphere.

Neighborly Town - 3/1/2012

It's a small city close to the lake and close to Chicago. One of the biggest advantages is its schools. Most of the elementary schools have a great school rating of 9 and up. It's true that it has more to offer to families with children, but with it's beautiful, established tree lined neighborhoods, it's a beautiful place for anyone to live. There's not too much in the way of restaurants, but it's close to Evanston, so there is still much to choose from if you broaden your range a little. It is very expensive. I'm from California, and when I search online for houses in a beach town I am interested in, they are often cheaper per square foot, many of them with an ocean view. I guess you pay for perfection. A great urban area - 3/31/2009

Wilmette is one of the close-in suburbs on Chicago's North Shore. Wilmette and next-door Evanston have their own parks, dining and recreation. And it's a short drive or train ride into Chicago, where there are more culture and recreation options than any one person can take advantage of. And we take advantage of as many as possible. Usually when someone asks where I'm from, I answer, "Chicago." In fact, one of the CTA Elevated train lines comes all the way to Wilmette. My favorite way to go downtown is Lake Shore Drive, running from Rogers Park on the North to Hyde Park on the south. The greatest concentration of theater, music venues, great restaurants and more is found in and near the Loop. However, there are great places of all kinds spread across the city... every type of music, every type of theater, and a blend of every type of culture. [read more...]
