I've lived in Chesapeake for the past four years. I have lived in several other states and can honestly say that Chesapeake is by far the most boring area I have ever been to. There is nothing about the area that makes it unique or interesting. I live in what is considered by most locals to be "the best and most affluent area of Chesapeake." Other than the public schools which are pretty good in Hickory, what is so great about this place? There is virtually nothing interesting to see or do. This includes the people, restaurants, shopping and architecture. Very generic. The people in Chesapeake, as well as all of Hampton Roads seem almost robotic. They lack facial expressions and all have very similar personalities. Not to mention are quite rude. It's almost creepy. I feel like i'm in the twilight zone. Has anyone else noticed this?

BORING....NOT NEIGHBOR FRIENDLY - 1/17/2013

I am 64, have lived in many places...Jamaica, W.I. Wyoming, PR, Phoenix, AZ, NYC, NJ, Wyoming, Georgia, SC, Upstate, NY, Utah, Springfield, Mass, .....this kis the boringest, unfriendliest city/towns and neighborhoods ever. Of course youm may find an exception or two, but that is rare. Many people out here promise to contact you and stay in touch, that more than quickly proves to be false. Unless you need to move hre, do yourselves a favor, DO NOT. [read more...]

Living in Chesapeake - 10/21/2011

I decided to live in Chesapeake due to being stationed here back in 1995 and have called it home ever since. When I got out of the Navy in 1997 I had the choice of moving back to Philly (which I love dearly) or to my exhusbands small unevolving hometown outside of Houston. There wasn't any debate, Chesapeake is where we would raise our children and it was the best decision we made. Although it is considered a city, it is more like a large suburan area with access to any of the other 6 cities which are nearby. In as much as 15 minutes I can be in either Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk or even NC. Not to mention you are minutes away from the beach and Bush Gardens, Water Country, the Williamsburg outlet are 45 mins to an hour away. If you are looking for the feel of the city, Chesapeake in not the place you want to be but if you are looking for quality housing with yard space and not hear your neighbors kids run up the steps then this in your locality. Unlike Virginia Beach, many of the homes in Chesapeake are single family and have adaquate yard space with ample size rooms. Many of the communities are mix where you might find a $1M+ home development not far from low income housing, but low income housing does not look like what it sounds. Our police department is no-nosense and doesnt tolerate BS. I personnally believe that our school system is the best in the area and recently scored a 90% on-time graduation rate for those student who entered in the 9th grade (VA Pilot Online). Our Parks & Rec program is pretty good but could use some improvement but it is not something one would complain out. Chesapeake is a very young city, less than 50 years old and has a lot of growing to do with its services for its residents. Meadian age of a residence is 30 - 45, people who work and want to raise their families some place nice. The only problem I have with the city is that there aren't enough sidewalks and poor bus service so you have to drive everywhere you need to go.[read more...]

Traffic-Yuuk!!! - 1/17/2010

This area for its relative size has the worst traffic. the numerous bridges and tunnels, military base traffic and tourists keep traffic in this region highly unpredictable and downright frustrating. Traveling west from the area to Richmond and D.C. on a weekend or during a holiday can be a nightmare. I will not miss the traffic or personal property/automobile taxes when I retire and move from here.[read more...]

Hampton Roads is a nice place to live, but Chesapeake is a very populated area and more and more houses are being built. Chesapeake has a pretty good school system. They just built a new High School which has a lot of modern conveniences.[read more...]

Ready to move from Chesapeake Va - 6/5/2009

Chesapeake Va has been a nice place, but recent increase in home prices, taxes, Traffic congestion has made us think of moving. Pros for Chesapeake: Good employment opportunites, not to far from beaches, close to rural Virginia. Cons for Chesapeake: Traffice Condestion (City of Chesapeake has not developed roads to support the increase in housing), High Real Estate Taxes, Property Taxes on Vehicles.[read more...]

Climate in Chesapeake - 9/13/2007

It is really wonderful here. A little warm in the summer, but proximity to the ocean keeps the breezes coming. Everything is very flat, so put the sleds away (not much snow anyway)and get out the bicycles.[read more...]

Great place to raise a family - 6/26/2007

I have lived in the Hickory and Great Bridge areas of Chesapeake for 18 years. It is a very family oriented town and I highly recommend it to people who want to protect their family from people like the other reviewer of this town. That person must have significant issues.[read more...]

Relocating - 4/30/2007

I am thinking on relocating from Minneapolis hopefully by the end of the summer. How’s the job market overall? I am also an African American woman and a single mom. Soooooo, how are the men and schools? I am originally from Louisiana, lived in ATL for 15 years. I do not like pretentious and rude and close-minded people and extreme weather regardless how good the job market is. We, (my 8 year daughter and I), just want to live in a warm comfortable environment. All Opinions are welcomed. Thanks, Sabrina [read more...]

We miss Chesapeake! - 10/20/2006

My wife and I lived there for 5 years, and we loved it, and we hope to return in a few years (we are a military family). Great churches, good neighbors, probably one of the best places to live in the South (and definitely the best place to live in Hampton Roads). Summers are hot, and it an be quite humid in the summer (but not as hot as say, Texas or Oklahoma). South of the beltway has some of the better neighborhoods.[read more...]

Any info please - 7/29/2006

My husband and I are seriously considering a move to the Newport News area. I am wondering if Chesapeake is too far of a commute. We currently live outside of Detroit and we need to get out. The job market is terrible. I have read comments about the areas around Newport and its seems Chesapeake has the best reputation from everyone's comments on this site. Is rent expensive in Chesapeake? I have seen several homes for rent in the 1800-2400 range and that is out of my league. Any info is appreicated. [read more...]

I thought it was a great area - 7/26/2006

I visited Chesapeake and the Virginia Beach area for the fist time this month, and I really liked it. It is a very cute area with lots of neat stores and things to do. The people were much nicer there than they are in the East, people say "Sir" and "Ma'am", "excuse me" and have manners that are tough to find some places. The whole week I was there I only saw 1 guy act like a jackass, screaming and cursing at someone for being in his way in a parking lot, and he was from out of state anyway. As for the weather, it does get pretty hot and DARN humid, the humidity being the one main thing I could live without. All in all, a neat area that I could settle in, which is saying a lot since I have never liked any other part of Virginia, and I have lived in several.[read more...]

Chesapeake, Virginia - 4/15/2006

Chesapeake is a semi-rural suburb of Portsmouth and Norfolk, just west of Virginia Beach and just north of North Carolina. It is safe, has good schools, and has a quiet and comfortable feel. Cost of living is moderate and there are lots of trees. Winters are fairly mild, but it is really humid and wet (with lots of bugs!) in the summer. Spring and fall are long and lovely.[read more...]
