I moved to Delta from the Minneapolis area after college in 1997. I guess I was a lucky one...I had a decent paying job lined-up before I moved. My job allowed me to explore the entire western slope...but concentrated on the seven county area. I lived in Delta for close to five years and loved it and now miss it a little...I live in downtown Denver now and have for the last 7 years. Sure, I literally make 4 times now what I did on the West Slope, but I also never get to enjoy the incredible sunsets over the uncompahgre plateau and going for a bike ride on (some of the best) single track and never seeing anyone else. I was in my early 20s then and was able to live simply...natives thought it odd that I wasn't married with kids yet...it is a very "old-fashioned" mentality, but that was changing with the influx of new people moving to the area. I still visit the area, but most of my friends have since moved on...like me.

Delta Colorado - 11/21/2012

I've read a variety of comments about Delta and thought I'd share my thoughts. After living in the Denver area, (Parker and south Aurora), for 30 years plus, we decided to move to Delta Co. just over two years ago to be closer to family on the western slope. Delta gets about 12 inches of snow per year which is about one third of what we were used to on the other side of the state. Being so close to the desert it is common to have 30 degree temperature spreads from early morning to late afternoon. That being said, it really is quite pleasant for most of the year. December and Janruary are really cold especially in the mornings and July/August is pretty hot but just mainly as the afternoon progresses. The rest of the year has very pleasant comfortable weather. Delta has about 9000 people in it which for us is great. We have our Super Wal-Mart, Safeway, and City Market along with some decent restaurants and other shopping. There is a drive-in movie that gets a lot of business each summer plus there is the restored Egyptian Movie theater. There is a wonderful recreation center that has all the latest excercise equipment, tennis courts and racquetball. Also, if you like camping, golf, horseback riding, and sightseeing like we do--all of this is very closeby. The Grand Mesa is only a few miles away along with the beautiful San Juan Mountains about an hour away. Montrose offers more shopping and is only about 22 minutes away. Grand Junction offers much more and is only about 40 minutes away. If you are looking for a friendly small town with the above description you're likely enjoy Delta. If you are looking for a zillion big city things to do 24 hours a day then look elsewhere. Personally, I can see my wife and I being very content here in Delta for a very long time![read more...]

Mike is "spot on" - 10/27/2010

Nice area. Small town. area grew but front range grew alot more. Housing here is no more expenive than anywhere west of continental divide to and including Moab, UT. Very nice location, look at maps. If you wanna find something negative about a place I am sure you can. If you like small western slope towns driving distance to lotsa places. If you like towns where traffic laws are enforced then Delta might be fore you[read more...]

resonse to bad mouthing delta - 10/27/2010

How can Delta be that bad when Cedaredge is omly 20 miles away and has great reviews? Highpaying work all over the front range is hard to find. Saying all there is to do there is go to walmart and yardsales is total B.S. That sounds like ppl trying to make an excuse to leave the western slope. If you want museums, the zoo, malls amusement parks try Denver. Expecting to find them in Delta? get real! pull out your maps and see where it is. Near Moab, Grand Junction, Grand Mesa, Black Canyon, Telluride these are all day trips. Want somethin a little bigger Montrose is about 20 miles south. Want bigger than that Grand Junction is 30 miles north of Delta. Wouldn't recomend moving here without a job or any small town without a job. Delta is not the Gold at the end of the rainbow just another small town.[read more...]

It is that bad !!! - 8/7/2009

I moved here in 2006 to be nearer to family. What a mistake. There is absolutely nothing to do unless you like to grocery shop, go to Walmart, thrift stores or to yard sales on the weekend. No galleries, no theater, one museum that's closed most of the time and no music, unless you like country. The local attitude is provincial and insular and the people are clannish and seem to be barely into the 20th century much less the 21st. The Heddles Rec Center and the Ute Indian Pow Wow are the only saving graces. Hopefully I will be moving on soon. In the meantime I guess I'll just sit and watch the corn grow like everyone else.[read more...]

Visit yes, retire maybe, but DON'T MOVE HERE!! - 11/10/2006

My wife and I moved from the Washington, DC area to Delta, Co. The San Juans mountains hypnotized us. They are stunningly beautiful!! After 15 months though, we left. Here are some interesting things we learned about Western Colorado (Grand Junction to Ouray): 1 It's a tough place to make a living. Many (yes, many) people work two or more jobs and pay is terrible. Jobs are hard to find. Gasoline is expensive. Many people feel trapped because they can't afford to leave. 2 We found out that for every two that arrive one leaves. Real Estate Agents know this and are aware they could pick the listing back up in a few months. 3. They don't like newcomers, especially Californians and to a lesser degree Texans (the place is loaded with Texans). For the newcomer to make friends with a native... "foget about it"! 4. Alot of drug usage and higher than normal suicide rate. As one woman once told me- "this is the most un-Christian place I have ever lived!" 5. They are traffic Nazi's. I have never seen an area that is so obsessed with traffic violations. What am I talking about? Drive over the speed limit, pass on the double yellow line, run a red light and you will find out real quick (they have cell phones and they do use them). My parents (retired) fell in love with it and now love to spend their summers there. Nothing wrong with that! As I now love to say... "it's a great place to visit but no place to live!"[read more...]

Pay Stinks, Housing is way to expensive - 3/4/2006

Make $8 an hour as a paralegal or an accountant. You might as well work fast food and not have the headaches. Gas tax is 40 cents on a gallon making gas around $2.50 (3/3/2006) housing is a joke. you cant find anything to rent, and what you do is $800 a month for a clean place. $400 for a dive. $50,000 will buy you a house that you would have to fix before moving in. Live in a single wide trailer on a small lot and spend $100,000. There is nothing to do here unless all you ever want to do is fish and hunt and camp. Most people here Need 2 or 3 jobs to make it. People that have income from out of the area are the only ones that really make it well here. A lot move here from CA and such. weather is ok. Been in western Colorado for 31 years. TIME FOR ME TO LEAVE. I make my money online and my home is paid for so I actually am living much better then most here but I have never really liked it here. If your looking for a place to move AND find work, Western Colorado is not the place (unless your in construction) for some reason people are moving here Fortunately though, enough new people have moved in that the good-ol-boy way of government is slowly going away, as the people moving here from places like CA don't tolerate that kind of garbage. So in the last 10 years a lot of the hick mentality here is starting to finally disappear [read more...]
