Beautiful - 5/31/2014

The weather in West Palm Beach is absolutely beautiful all year around. It does tend to get really hot in July and August. If you love the sun and beaches, you will enjoy West Palm Beach.

IS IT A BAD IDEA TO MOVE MY ONLINE BUSINESS FROM L - 5/16/2014

I have an online business that I can practically move anywhere in the US. I would like to move to west palm beach but I have a husband and a 3 year old. I found that wellington and lake worth have good school districts. I am currently living in a very upper class neighborhood in long island, new york (garden city). Is west palm beach, wellington and lake worth a bad place to raise children? Are these upper class neighborhoods? Is my son going to grow up as a southener which is A LOT different than a new yorker lol. Also, I am white and my husband is Guyanese. Do you think we will be discriminated a lot and hated on because we are a mixed couple and from new york? Thanks!

What would be the areas and neighborhoods NOT to move into in West Palm Beach? It looks like a beautiful city and my family and I are looking forward to moving there. Winsdor Park ? Garden Hills Circle area near Summit Pines Blvd?? our realtor showed us a few homes in this area???? To the people that actually live and know West Palm Beach your view and opinion is very important. We had a choice between Oviedo Florida and West Palm Beach but Oviedo seems like such a really small town so we choose West Palm.

I Love West Palm Beach - 7/29/2012

I have lived in the West Palm Beach area for almost 20-years and I love it here. I love the climate, nature, lifestyle--which is why most people want to be here! I get so tired of people saying "It's too hot...It's too humid"......Well, WHAT DID YOU THINK FLORIDA WAS GOING TO BE? COLD?? Florida, in case you did not know has a sub-tropical climate. It's TROPICAL. This area is not as bad as some people say. Perhaps they live in the bad areas, and EVERY city has it's good and bad areas. The job market is not great here and South Florida was really hit hard by the recession. There is a lack of high-tech jobs here. If you work in medical, you will live a good life here. West Palm Beach is a small city and experiences the same problems as other small cities around the country.

I Love West Palm Beach - 7/29/2012

I live in a suburb of West Palm Beach, Florida which is located in Palm Beach County. I disagree with a lot of things that the "native" Floridian said about West Palm Beach. I have lived in the Palm Beach area for almost 20-years. First off, things change over time. Yes, some things have gone downhill about this area, while other aspects of the City and County have changed for the better. If people don't speak English in your local Wal-Mart, then maybe you are living in the wrong neighborhood. The job market is really poor here at best, especially for someone who is college educated. Minimum-wage jobs are plentiful, but they don't pay the bills, nor does it allow you to live in a desirable neighborhood. We need more high-tech jobs here, not just medical jobs. The Schools are not the best, but I'm sure there are worse places in the United States than Palm Beach County. I love Palm Beach County for the weather, nature and the lifestyle and that is why most people move here or want to be here. There is good and bad anywhere you live. No place is perfect. I have never really come across any rude people here. Most people I meet are quite pleasant. During "season", you will see more people from New York and Jersey and encounter more rude drivers on the road. South Florida is a playground for the rich and a haven for the retired folks--always has been and always will be. If West Palm Beach (South Florida) were not desirable, no one would want to come here!

Worse than you can imagine - 7/9/2012

Let me start out by stating: I am a NATIVE Floridian, born in West Palm Beach and have lived my entire life in this area. I believe I can actually give an objective review of this city. Since the late 90's, this area has gone significantly downhill. It's been overrun with illegals, the homeless, and criminals. Go to the Wal-Mart on Belvedere & Military and I'll give you $100 for every ENGLISH-only speaking person you find in that store (this includes both shoppers and employees. I am not against immigrants from other countries (I am the granddaughter of Italian immigrants) BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN THEY COME HERE AND DON'T BOTHER TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE. TRY CALLING A UTILITY COMPANY AND YOU HAVE TO PRESS A BUTTON TO SPEAK TO THE CSR IN ENGLISH. It drives me CRAZY to hear nothing but Spanish or Creole when I go into a store/restaurant/gas station. You can't go to a convenience store or gas station without being harassed for spare change. The first sight people arriving at PBIA see are panhandlers standing in the street just outside the exits. The job situations STINKS! I have three college degrees, am bilingual (Yes, I speak Spanish-I saw the necessity of learning Spanish when I was back in high school-in the 80's) and there are no jobs for qualified professionals. If you want to work for minimum wage, there are jobs; but you HAVE to speak Spanish or Creole to qualify. If you have a college degree, you are OVER QUALIFIED. No night life, culture or class. When I was growing up, it was so safe; you could leave your doors unlocked. Now I own 2 GUNS and never leave my doors unlocked (for even a minute). Everything is so expensive and the cost of living vs. what you earn is grossly disproportionate. I haven't been to the beach in years, because the pollution has become so bad. Sea lice (microscopic jellyfish larvae) infest the water and if they burrow into your skin, get prepared for total misery. People are rude and distrustful. No place for middle-aged singles to go to meet like minded others. The school system is a joke, teachers are paid a little over $30,000 a year and are treated poorly. Florida is an 'at will' work state, which means you can be fired from your job at any time without cause. There is no state income tax, but no job security either. My last three bosses have treated all the employees like crap because they know there are three other people who would be knocking the door down to get a job. I feel saddened by the change my beautiful city has undergone. I'm looking to relocate next year (outside of Florida) I want to feel like part of a community again and hear English when I go into a store. I may still have to lock my door, but at least I hope to know I'm in America.

west palm beach - 1/12/2010

The weather is amazing all year round and the ocean lifestyle is huge. So if your really into watersports, rum runners and the sun come on down. The only bummer is summer is intense and the chance of hurricanes. All in all its a very active city.

In defense of my hometown... - 7/10/2009

I have lived in West Palm Beach for almost my entire life and it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. After reading some of the other comments I do have a few responses: When I was in elementary and middle school, West Palm was less developed and there were a lot less people. Once more people started to move into the area, it became more crowded, as to be expected. Prices started to go up and we had a lot of people coming down here from New England, especially New York. In my experience, a lot of people move down here and expect it to be like how it was where they were living before. You can't realistically expect to move to a completely different region of the country and for things to stay the same. Yes, we wear flip flops all the time. It's in the 80s and 90s for a good majority of the year and our dirt isn't dirt- it's sand! If you want high fashion, then go back to New York. I'm just trying to get through the day without passing out from heat exhaustion! Crime has gone down here. But just like anywhere else, you trust your instincts, and don't do stupid stuff like leaving your doors unlocked or leaving your wallet or shopping bags in plain view in your car, walking down alleys at 2am or associating with drug dealers or gangbangers, and you should be fine. South Florida is different from many places in that there is a lot of cultural diversity and a lot of immigrants, especially from Caribbean countries. It's the closest area in the United States to these places. If you don't like immigrants then don't move here. Plain and simple. My hometown has it's flaws. The construction does get annoying and sometimes there's just way too many people in one area. It has definitely been affected by the recession. But I love the weather, I love being within 10 minutes of the beach, and I love how my friends come from all different walks of life, countries, and cultures. Obviously, it's a personal decision as to whether one would choose to live here, but that's my two cents.

cost of living - 6/5/2009

This is a very high crime rate city also the cost of living is very high. Lot rent for a mobile home is $515.00 pr month, and you have to cut you own grass and pay for water.

Only fun if your rich - 10/9/2008

I was born and raised here in west palm. First off there is a lot of crime here. My home has been robbed several times. The weather is 50/50 in the wunter its great. Crisp cool days very little rain. Winter is the only good time to be in Florida. But it does come at a cost. The roads are packed with old people that can't drive. The summer on the other hand is horrible. Its hot and humid and it rains alot. The people here are rude and generally not too friendly. The public schools here suck but they are getting better. If you like the night life you will find lots to do here, but if your looking for a nice place to raise children this is not it. The roads and highways in this town seem to be in a constant state of construction that seems to have no end in sight. The homes are all over priced. We also have a problem with homeless people and drugs in our streets at night. I can't even stop to get gas without being hassled for spare change. I just want to go somewhere that is nice and has a sense of community.

Very Diverse - 9/23/2008

Yes, there are lots of poor black neighborhoods, but then again there are also poor white and Hispanic neighborhoods as well. Not to mention the fact that West Palm Beach is one of the few areas in the U.S. with an actual black middle class! West Palm Beach is the most diverse city in Florida, so I don't know what some have said about segregation. Yes, there's tons of crime, but it's not sexist, racist, or homophobic. Can you prove these things? Because this area seems more tolerant of that than many other parts of the country.

New Yorkers-DO NOT MOVE TO FLORIDA!!!!! - 8/30/2008

I have lived in West Palm Beach for a year and moved here from NY state. All you New Yorkers: DO NOT MOVE HERE!! Call this fair warning. They hate us here and make that known everywhere you go. The workplace is a joke with pays that are obscene. I was making 45.00 an hour on Long Island but was offered 12.00 for the same job. This is an "At Will" work state. They fire and hire workers in a seemingly indiscriminate way higgledeepiggledee without fair warning or within reason. Permanent jobs are almost nonexistent. This is a hustler's state. In addition make no mistake about it this is a racist, homophobic, sexist part of the world. Blacks still live a segregated life here and are treated more than badly. The treatment is both subtle and blatant. Crime is very high here although I have not run into any of it personally. People in houses have had problems with home invasion and theft in my neighborhood. Security companies are made up of mostly foreign nationals and immigrants. Not a secure place to live. The water here has had several boil water notices and fecal material has been found in it. The place is run like one of the islands. It really should be kicked out of the US and made a territory instead of a state.

WPB Devoid of Culture - 8/24/2008

For anyone thinking of moving to WPB it is NOT an exciting place to live. I have been in FL all of my life (30 yrs) and in West Palm Beach for the last six years. Summers are horrible: it is as hot and humid as a sauna, everything slows down because it is not the "season", and it rains every day. Throw in the possibility of hurricanes too. As far as nightlife and culture, you can find some but there is lack of class, sophistication and there is level of "cheese" accepted that would not fly for a second in a more urbane setting like San Francisco or Manhattan. Learn to speak Spanish too and be ready for the slow pace that comes with some of the cultures that permeate this area. All in all, WPB is banal, homogenized and completely devoid of interesting culture. PS-I've been trying to sell my home and move out of FL forever! WPB is okay if you're into the suburbs and having to drive 20 minutes to get anywhere half way decent.
