| Dual Income Needed (or near six figures total) - 8/27/2011
The area is beautiful - living in the Blue Ridge Mountains is gorgeous. But .. the views don't pay the bills. Housing is overpriced. You are better off living off-the-mountain and commuting. Jobs are scarce. ASU is it and good luck trying to find a staff/admin job. Most of the staff/admins are related or grew up together. Small town, low wages, summer time invasion of Floridians, poor shopping choices (Wal*mart or K*Mart), over priced groceries. Closest "big shopping" is Hickory or Winston-Salem. Charlotte is over 2 hours away. So factor in the fuel costs and it gets real expensive real fast. Great place for going to college -- four years and you are out.[read more...]

| How "Green" is Boone? - 6/11/2010
I found ASU by digging around trying to find schools that teach green energy, solar, wind, etc. So my question is, how "green" is life in Boone? I live in Townsend, TN and if I even try to talk environment people blank out. NC is part of the movement putting windpower at schools so I'm impressed. However, I want to make sure wherever I move has enough diversity, most importantly people interested and involved in the alternative energy movement. Comments and info greatly appreciated![read more...]

| Life in the Blue Ridge Mountains - 1/7/2010
Quality of life in Boone, NC is great so long as you enjoy scenic views, outdoor activities, unpredictable weather and minor inconveniences to what most might call 'creature comforts'. The views are great and the options for outdoor activities are endless, however we are 2-3 hours from a major airport and don't have your typical chain retailers (Target, Starbucks, GAP, etc...). Its quaint and very peaceful most days![read more...]

| Extreme Housing Shortage in Boone NC - 4/23/2009
Yes it is beautiful and yes the value of education at ASU is great but they don't tell you that the University kicks you out of the dorm after your freshman year because they accept more students than they can house. The local people take advantage of these students and their familys by charging extream rent to these young people. It is shamefull and the University is not doing anything or even trying to help. Yes they have a web site but all that is is advertisement for the renters who are preying on the students. Its all about greed. What a shame such a beautiful peaceful town with such a rich history and culture has become fodder for vulchers.
I hope you do a story on this. I have lived in NC all my life and know many who have attended this fine university but after the rest of the US took notice of this beautiful place when APP State won the football championship It became caught up in the greed of todays society. I am a single mother who has one child at UNC-CH and another who is a freshman at Appalachian. We have been looking for an apartment for months now. If you are intrested in more info feel fee to contact me.

| Questions for Residents of Boone - 7/9/2007
I am a young professional guy looking around for a more healthy and friendly place to live than my current home of Phoenix, AZ. I just read about Boone in Outside Magazine. Are there many social and business opportunities in Red Lodge or would I be bored out of my skin? How is the weather? Please give my your thoughts. Thanks!

| Boone - Home Sweet Home - 2/26/2007
As a young professional, I know now that Boone was an ideal place to grow up. Appalachian State University provides a stimulating and increasingly sophisticated feel to the town, and the outdoor opportunities are many. Unfortunately the popularity of Boone and ASU has led to hasty and ill-advised development, and soon the pristine mountainsides will be plotted off and sold to those incoming from other parts of the country. It is inevitable, and therefore imperative that it is done wisely so as not to ruin the true value of the area: its history, beauty, and sense of community.[read more...]

| Beautiful Boone - 8/6/2005
Boone is surrounded by some of the most gorgeous mountain scenery on the entire East coast. Boone itself is a small town, it's heart seems to be built around Appalachain State University, which has a very nice campus. Despite its small size, Boone seems to have a decent economy, which probably relates back to a combination of the University and tourism. Here you're surrounded by a variety of excellent ski locations, some of the best cycling roads in the nation, and an all around stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Nature itself offers so much to do here it's impossible to think of it all and write it in one paragraph. Boone is my favorite mountain getaway destination on the East coast, and second only to the Rockies in Colorado.[read more...]
