Oceanside is a thriving beach community and is is home to various tributes to the Pacific Ocean like the Oceanside Municipal Pier (the longest all wood pier on the west coast), the Oceanside Harbor and Marina (offering a variety of water sports like jet skiing, scuba diving, boat rentals, and whale watching excursions), and the California Surf Museum (surfing-related memorabilia and exhibitions).
Away from the beach Oceanside is rich in great site-seeing and family activities like the historic Mission at San Luis Rey and Heritage Park (featuring guided tours and a gift shop), the weekly farmer's market (with fresh produce, flowers, and local art), and numerous golf courses and parks, even a dog park. Further family activities can also be found a short drive away - with Legoland, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Zoo, and Sea World within a short distance.

DO NOT MOVE HERE!!!!!! First of all the cost of living here is ridiculous a half decent two bedroom apt here is about 1400 a month the transportation here sucks. The transit district just keeps cutting spending so theres less stops less frequent departure times and the people weirdos they are psychotic and take meds or they try to rip marines off because its a military town. And they're beaches are filthy. Im from florida and people here just dont care about they're nature smokin cigarettes right by the sand in front of people. And the other type of people include losers, surfers and crap load of meth addicts I just think oceanside is the evil twin of glitzy Carlsbad. All in all im gettin out of here and relocating to Charlotte NC one of theis best cities in the country right now check that out before u consider comin here. And the only good thingisland the weather just nothing but sunshine all the time no [read more...]

1 Year in O'side...like all places, plusses and mi - 7/21/2012

Background: I grew up/lived for over 30 years in the burbs 30 miles east of L.A.; lived the past 26 years in the burbs of SF East Bay. Relocated to O’side a year ago due to aging family member. O’side and SD County is a significant change in many many respects compared to the more populous SF Bay area and Los Angeles. I’m a college educated professional worker and when I lived in NorCal I resided in a pretty upscale area – O’side and actually most all of SD County is different scene. North County in particular is the land of ‘flip-flops’ and shorts, not a lot of ‘professional’ types here, but for good reason: with the large Pendleton Marine base in town and a good proportion of Hispanic’s this is really ‘working class’ type of town. As you head South things change a bit..more corporate biz near San Diego. Plusses: Climate: if you like sunshine and MILD weather, well, this is the place. But you already know that. If you miss the change of seasons you may find the weather as I do, tends to be on the boring side. People: interesting ‘mix’ in O’side of military, many young Marines and families, many retired military too. Lots of Hispanics too. People are people and what you make of them, I’ve found them friendly here but have everywhere I’ve lived. Politics are conservative through SD County – lot’s of military, it’s very ‘Red’ here. Culture: The locals say they make up for the lack thereof with the sunshine, true, enough said – this is NOT San Francisco by means. Less of a base of highly educated people, makes sense as there is only one large University (UCSD) and it’s near 30 miles to the South. Things to do: Great if you like to surf (but beaches get crowded, Carlsbad and South of here is nicer beaches), you can get to the desert, mountains nearby, but IMO they don’t compare to what one finds up North (Sierras). Overall Impression: cheapest SoCal ‘coastal’ city for housing in SD County, but not dirt cheap – all things are relative. Probably pretty suitable for families with kids, though I’m not knowledgeable of the school scene. If you want nightlife and the arts/entertainment you need to head to downtown SD and still slim pickings compared to a major metro area like SF or LA. Will I say here? Unlikely. I need to work for another few years and the professional jobs are down in SD, it’s heavy traffic on I-5 for 30+ miles. Due to the relatively large amount of military (Navy, Marines, etc.) in the country a lot of work/employment is defense related (niche), some biotech but even that is not huge….there is simply not a lot of diversity in ‘businesses’ here aside from the vacation/resort/spa related stuff. Wages are a LOT less than up North, this surprised me – overall I’d say SD county wages compared to SF Bay area are 20% lower, maybe even a tad bit more. I want to experience some change of seasons, personally the weather is a bit too ‘bland’ for me. [read more...]

On the DECLINE - 7/31/2011

All stats on the racial make-up of the region are a "best guess" based on available data.. However, the data does not begin to capture the reality of the situation. The real latino/hispanic population easily registers at 50%.[read more...]

Driving the Middle and Lower Classes out. - 4/16/2008

Hello, CA due to the economy and other factors has a plan already in action to upgrade the tourism, increase the cost of living and attract new investors. Good plan however the wages are not increasing and the cost of living is now not affordable to the lower classes (obsolete middle class) the poorest are gone, dead or forgotten. The Lower classes are hanging on. Oceanside, has beautiful coastline views, terrain common to beach cities, a nice sleeping beachtown feel and the people are kinder and community minded. The developers are attracting high end investors and foreign investors to this area. The job market is not too good. A very nice place to visit San Diego and all it has to offer is very nearby and worth visiting. Thanks, I hope to find a real job and a real life. Best regards. Kim Lloyd. My interest is about cities where Women, divorced can work, and have a reasonable quality of life. I appreciate your surveys and look forward to finding this place if it exists.[read more...]

Another boring day in paradise! - 5/20/2007

Climate along the coast of Southern California (Oceanside is named correctly) stays fairly consistent year-round: warm, wet Winters and somewhat warmer, dry Summers. Spring and Fall are transitions between those two non-extremes. Even so, it is not unusual to see a native Californian wearing a parka and mittens because the temperature dropped to sixty degrees in December! Growing up back East with real four seasons, including ice and snow in Winter, I laugh when I see the parkas here.[read more...]

Town of Oceano - 2/22/2006

Right on California's Central Coast. Great little town! Rural small town feel, near the beach (Oceano Dunes and Pismo Beach), great weather, close to everything you need. Home prices have gone up here, but affordability is still fairly decent, compared to other parts of the county. I've been here for 9 years and I'm glad that I chose this town to live in.[read more...]

the beach is the beach - 1/30/2006

If you like the ocean and the beach and are willing to accept the locals, the California tourists and the out of state and/or country tourists all over the place, then you will like oceanside. We used to vacation in Carlsbad (right next door) and wanted to move there, but even in 1997, when we were looking to move, we couldn't afford Carlsbad. But Oceanside is right next door as I said, and I go to the Carlsbad beaches all the time (the Oceanside beaches are being improved all the time now, so it's not that crucial) There are several retirement communities and mobile home parks in Oceanside and there are even more in the adjacent cities (Vista, San Marcos, Escondido). I'd like to move to where there aren't that many people...otherwise it's a great place.[read more...]

From Frog to Prince... - 1/11/2006

"Oceanslime" ...that's what they used to call this place in the eighties: A marine town plagued with prositution, drugs and crime. You didn't want to live here and if you did, you wouldn't want anyone to know. Fast forward twenty years and everything has changed. The streets are safe, property values have skyrocketed, and private development dollars are pouring into the city. Oceanside is now one of the more desireable spots in county to live.[read more...]
