Ugh - i was horribly surprised by the humidity here in the Washington DC area. I came from Northern CO (after doing a 2 year stint in Boston) so it was a shock to my system.

Who know that a city built on a swamp could be so hot & sticky? (certainly not my dumba**) :)

Housing - 12/14/2012

Housing is still much more affordable in Hyattsville than in other areas just outside DC. The historic district is charming, and you'll find more quality architecture here than in many of the cookie-cutter developments in other suburbs. Very convenient to the University of Maryland. Hyattsville Maryland - 9/24/2012

Hyattsville, Maryland is an affordable community in the Washington D.C. area. Additionally, public transportation options are abundant here and there is close proximity to a shopping mall, University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland University College (many adult students in attendance), a highly ranked high school, and reasonably priced apartments . My husband and I moved here during the summer of 2010 and we both intend to permanently settle in the D.C. area. Hyattsville, Maryland is a good community to move to for a reasonable priced community within the D.C. area and great public transportation.[read more...]

Unexpectedly Friendly - 4/22/2011

I've lived in several states including NJ, HI, and CT, as well as in urban Baltimore. In most of these locales, your quality of life was pretty deeply dependent on the quantity of your income. Unless you commanded the upper five salaries, it was hard to find a place to live where kids play outside together without concern, or where your neighbors would watch out for you. At the Kirkwood apartment complex in Hyattsville, we have just that, and for considerably less monetary outlay. The largely Hispanic community here includes many young families. Just the other day, I was watching a dozen young children play soccer in one of the complex's many green spaces. There are safe, colorful playgrounds for smaller children to play in, as well, and their parents are generally outside chatting with each other while they watch them play. This would be a positive enough indicator to me, but in the year and a half I've lived here, I've also had people be friendly to me personally, even though I'm an overweight white girl who doesn't speak Spanish. Once, when I was locked out, I went around the back to our neighbor's window and asked them to let me into the main building. They didn't speak English, but we gestured it out, and they were nice enough to let me in. Another time, they questioned some friends of ours who were watching our cats because they hadn't seen them around before and were concerned about them entering our apartment. There's also a beautiful park across the street that connects to one of the nation's major bike trails. The DC Metro is a 10 minute walk from our front door, and the Post Office is just down the street, as are two supermarkets and a number of other shops. Our neighborhood isn't perfect. There's some crime, and we certainly don't leave our car unlocked. Still, I feel safe walking alone here at night, and when I look out the window, I'm happy with where we live.[read more...]

crime - 5/21/2010

The crime rate is high, but its directed at the younger crowds. You can go out and have a good time with the night life and not be worried about the crime.[read more...]

Climate - 5/21/2010

The climate is nice in Hyattsville. Their can be some real hot muggy days in the summer. It's a place that gets 4 seasons but not a lot of snow. It will snow about 4 times a year and the snow will be gone the next day. The winters are short. [read more...]

Black/Hispanic Bedroom Community - 9/15/2006

Pros: Close to train stations, More shops and stores being built, close to major highways, University of Maryland, etc. Crime not as bad as some may make it out to be... Cons: ...however it does exist. Is right on the border of the bad parts of DC. Some would say "overrun" by illegal immigrants. Its nice. Just not one of your ritzier areas.[read more...]
