safe small town - 5/4/2011

I've lived in the Petoskey, Michigan area all my life...I feel very safe here. It's absoulutley gorgeous here, if you like cooler climates...we have about 2 1/2 months of 80-90 degree temps, that's our "summer". [read more...]

Not a desirable place to live!!! - 3/6/2011

The summer months are "pretty", but thats' it! The housing is over-priced everywhere here all year, & alot of the restaurants,(and stores) close until the summer months! Downtown Petoskey has alot of vacant stores until summer...very depressing, as well as the large "hole" in the town that isn't filled yet! Do not get sick on a week-end as the hospital is very under-staffed, & there aren't even any 24 hr. pharmacies, so you are forced to go to the hospital if you need a drug. The hospital staff has been extremely rude when we had to go, & we didn't feel the nurses & Docs. were very professional. We cannot wait to move! The water-quality has very high minerals which make your glassware white,& needless to say the horrible build-up in your hair! Petoskey is above the 45th parallel & the sun rarely shines from October-May! This town is also very lacking in the Arts, as they only have ONE Art show all year...how sad. We will be moving soon down-state where there is more civilization, friendly, happier folk, great hospitals, much more shopping,& a high appreciation of the ARTS!!! [read more...]

City of lots to do with a Redneck insurgency - 3/15/2008

This area a lovely, the bay is amazing the way the light hits it. It can be very windy here with winds 25 mph and greater. I have lived here for 3 years and found many of its charms and taken advantage of its many natural beauties. The down town is great but expensive, which has only encouraged the Big Box stores to take over. The winter can be ridiculous, but there are a lot of places one can go cross country skiing (for free even) and there is the winter park and ice fishing. The problem is that even thought there are culturally cool things to do, and festivals and so forth, there is a redneck element that is at times overwhelming. People smoke everywhere (not as bad as some of the outlaying cities) there are only a few smoke free establishments (City Park Grill). The rednecks come out of the woods and into the city of Petoskey to go to Wal Mart. And then if you have to go to Wal Mart for some unfortunate reason, it smells like they’d just been there. We will be leaving the area because of the surplus of rednecks, and the lack of good jobs. There are jobs here, but not ones worth having to put up with hillbilly backwoods toothless jug tooting redneck [read more...]
