| Best place to live...... What a joke! - 4/17/2013
I moved here with my family 11 years ago from Nashville TN. I wish I could say it got easier living here after time but Unfortuantly it hasn't. As a teenager living here school was hell for me. I had a bunch of football players pull my dress up in front of practically the whole school during first bell. Not once but twice. The second time my books fell all over the floor and I fell against the wall crying. I called my parents who came in personally to talk to Coach Cofield who is the assistant principle at Madison Middle. He felt that just because one of them said they were sorry nothing should be done to them. After my parents fought for some sort of justice they decided to paddle only one of the players twice. This football player went around bragging about only getting two licks for what he had done to me. My parents then tried contacting the supervisor over the school board who would not return any call. The school system is a joke. This is only one incident that happen but many more. I always felt out of place. The friends I had were not from Madison either. I think that's why we all got along. Now as a mother, my husband and I are terrified of our little girl being raised in the Madison county school system. So much that we are thinking of putting her in a expensive private school with the hope that the things that I endured will not happen to her. People are snooty and clickish here. Its hard to fit in. As much as I wish to leave this place all my family is here and we have roots here now. I dream of hitting the lottery and moving us all outta here. My husband and I are home owners. The covenants are a joke. You have to ask permission to repaint your shutters the same color. It's a joke. My parents made beautiful changes to their home that only improved the neighborhood but they only received grief from the home owners association. The homeowners association is nothing but a bunch of control freaks. Who knows what they spend our dues on??? They won't send out statements. The cops are bullies. Schools suck. The area is super expensive. Snobby people. So with all that being said don't move here unless you have to! If I could say one good thing about Madison "The City" there is not a lot of crime. Not unless they cover it up which is a definite possibility.

| Too snooty for my liking! Not a friendly place - 12/12/2012
Having located from the Northeast, I can most certainly agree with this person's assessment of Madison, MS. We have found it very hard to integrate into the southern culture. Moved into a new sub-division and not one person stopped by to welcome us. People are very snooty and if you don't go wild for College football, you just don't fit in. It amazes me that so many young people around here drive huge expensive vehicles and live in big homes on one income. You can find all the wives at the gym once the kids are dropped off at school. We thought that that the southern hospitality thing that everyone talks about, would be a welcome thing. As far as I'm concerned, the people from the Northeast are much nicer and not as phoney. This has been our assessment thus far having relocated in 05/12. It's time for us to go![read more...]

| Awful If you can Avoid this Place Please Do For yo - 9/13/2012
I have no idea where this information comes from or how it could possibly be one of the best places to live. The cost of living here is more than anywhere I have found in the state. We have a Kroger right up the street, and you can go just not even five miles down the road to another Kroger and the prices are cheaper. I pay over 5000.00 a year in taxes on a not quite 3000 SQ foot house. The HOA in every neighborhood I have heard about think they are god. i know first hand mine does. They also increase your homeowners dues every time they can. The schools are the worst I have seen yet. They want you to think they are good. They do not help the children that are not naturally smart. The ones they have to really try and help they either can't or choose not to and find a way to get them to drop out or send them to alternative school. My smart child when I was taking her out they told me exactly, "We can't let her go her grades are too good." From the first state test they take in elementary they tell them they will fail the grade over that test. The police start to harass kids the minute they are teenagers ( and some before) and don't let up. They have a miserable time here. Things get worse a lot worse once they start to drive. They always smell marijuana in the car, and they want to search every car a kid is driving. The mayor is a dictator a poor woman was told to take down her Christmas decorations of peacocks and had that not made the news, and a Facebook page that blew up nationally, she probably would have had to take them down but once the mayor looked like a idiot nationally she changed her view. Most everyone here thinks they are better than you. But hey we did get a 28 million dollar bridge with Strawberry's on the end caps of the supports, that we didn't need... It doesn't matter that she ran in it some of the oldest houses in the city backyards and they will never be able to sale those homes now. She didn't care about that she wanted that Bridge....So I guess we know where our taxes are going. And they have voted to raise them again. She wants Hoy Road four lanes and I guess she will get what she wants again. By the way it really is unnecessary to four lane it. Could use a good pavement however. When we moved here it was a great place to live in 1994, but it is not the same. now they can no longer build homes if they are not 2500 sq ft. How does a new family afford that. They don't because they don't want you here if you don't have money. Don't think about renting because she is keeping those people out too. Even in a falling eccomony where those people were trying to save their house from foreclosure by renting it out. That isn't her problem. | Review of Madison, MS - 11/2/2010
I moved to madison a little over a year ago. Nice enough place. Too many people crammed into too small an area. Idiot drivers everywhere who will cut you off, run you over, and dont like turn signals. I only drive a few miles to work everyday and usually have at least one person in my lane or pulling out in front of me etc. Roads are absolutely horrendous. The worst potholes and surfaces with humps and bumps that can make your car go airborne even when doing the speedlimit. The town makes everything built be covered in bricks and no billboards or signs. Hard to find things at first. I like that they keep the property values up and keep undesireable things like trailer parks and strip clubs out. Need to fix the roads to match the buildings. The person that said there is about 19 students to each teacher is crazy. Some locals are pretty snobby and think they are better than you because of it. Mayor is the dictator of all that is Madison ( Mary Hawkins Butler I believe is her name) I am told that she must approve the wallpaper in a business if it wants to be in Madison. Crime is not bad especially being so close to the very crime laden Jackson. It some times spills over to here. Crime can be bad on the other side in Canton as well. Most people are either born here or got transplanted for work. I dont think anyone will pick this place out of a map as a great place to move to. It is great for the area but not a place to pick because it rates well in polling of cities. There are a lot of nice people in spite of the few snobs. Pretty area. Decent amount of things to do. | Very difficult to integrate - 4/11/2010
If you are not originally from Mississippi, you will have a difficult time integrating socially. You are asked who "your people" (i.e. family) are and if they aren't known or you aren't from here, they won't accept you. It is like the "old south" in the civil war era. There is the "good ole boys" club (mostly all preppy hunters and fisherman) who all look and act the same, and the women are expected to be a stepford wife and social conformist, playing the perfect hostess to all her shallow and superficial friends who also look, dress, and act the same. It is a world of the "have" and "have not" and the "haves" are snobby elite's. If you can manage to find people who have moved here from other places, you may end up with friends and grow to accept your lot in life here and do okay, but it takes a while if you aren't willing to become a Mississippi chameleon. Sorry, but there's not a lot of good to say about living here. I can't wait to move.[read more...]

Madison ms is one of the worst places i've lived in yet. first days of school were horrible, people were so mean! the mayor is a psyco freak, who demand all buildings are brick. you also have to request to put anything colorful, in your front yard and remember no colored curtains in the front windows. if you like to be under a dictatorship madison is the place to live
