Review of Susanville, California

Considering Employment in Susanville, CA & quick r

Recent job opportunity at the local hospital(BLMC) has prompted me to research many aspects of life in the Susanville area. Have a long time friend who works at BLMC and it is a very small, quaint, clean, new(2003) facility. Small enough that everyone knows all other employees. BLMC gets about 2 runs of inmates per day as patients-they are very well behaved, remainder of patients is a mix of Military Veterans and locals. The population at 18-20,000 is a bit misleading, about 11,000 of them live at the 2 prisons at outskirts of town and provide continuous economic support and business to the hospital and surrounding community. The crime rate there, I understand is near zero, and pace of life is slow and relaxed. They do have a notable symphony program locally, which adds refinement to the small town atmosphere, similar to where I grew up, south of Yosemite Nat'l Park near Bass Lake(fond memories). Summer temps in 90's, winter to mid 20's, 2-3 ft of snow, 15 in rain/yr, 250+ days of sun, elev@4200. Of note is the rare, all 4 seasons a yr. I personally noticed a constant wind(15-20mph) when visiting and also that Lake Honey(20 min south) was bone dry, leaving lakefront homes/properties with no lake. The economic outlook there upon quick review is varied. Utilities are below the national median(NM)by about 10 pts, food is ~13% above, lots of housing for sale as is everywhere(range ~$100K-$350K), avg commute is ~10-20 min, approx 50% of population earns $20-$48K/yr[someday I may get to the upper half:-)] I haven't yet spent any time tinkering and snooping in town as we usually do(antique shops, thrift shops, food, ect.), yet my initial impression is of a quiet and relaxed town, with oodles of outdoor opportunity for recreation, fishing, hiking, camping, wildlife & likely hunting if you fancy that. This hopefully provides a quick overview of varied stats that may prove useful to others looking, like myself.

I currently live 90 minutes south in NW Reno. I will post a quick review and opinion on the lifestyle here, similarities and differences, next time.
