A war Zone - 7/22/2012

We love Fallbrook, problem is, you might as well live in a war zone as in Fallbrook. The Marines are not good neighbors, they destroy the tranquility we moved here for, damage our homes with almost constant explosions from bombs and artillery shelling. Fallbrook residents tell stories of dogs jumping through glass windows trying to get away from the ground shaking and the noise. Helicopters fly over our homes, props pitched at angles that cause popping sounds, the windows in our homes rattle and shake. Mothers tell of their children being woken from sleep afraid and crying . It is impossible to have a conversation while sitting in our homes when helicopters fly over even, the simple pleasure of watching a television program is impossible. Compounding the problem, unformed locals, refer to the problem as the sound of freedom. I have lived here since 1976 and still enjoy the ever decreasing quite of a small town. The Marines have huge amounts of land East of Fallbrook near Twenty Nine Palms and are acquiring more land. Maybe because I served in the Army from 1963-1967, my view is biased. However, the Marines mission is to land on a beach which they have not done since the Korean War. The Marines have a PR branch equal to any major corporation in this country, its mission is to keep funds flowing to the defense contractors, many produce munitions. If flying helicopters over our homes rather than on the base could make our men and women safer, I would be the first to say Ok, if using high explosive shells for target practice was needed, same thing. However, there is no need for either, using Twenty Nine Palms would be better for Fallbrook and more cost effective. [read more...]

Nice but insulated - 6/21/2009

Churches in Fallbrook seem bible oriented and nice, but also insulated from the realities of the real world. When in NYC, I was told coldness is a part of large city churches; smaller towns would have churches which are warmer and full of love, but to my dismay I discovered that was not true. In fact, some churches in Brooklyn sounded more Christlike than those in rural areas in California. Fallbrook needs a re-awakening. Barring the coldness and the insularity of the churches, they were otherwise quite nice I thought. [read more...]

Living in Fallbrook - 8/19/2008

Fallbrook is a rarety in California, am independent small town in a rural area, not a suburb, with its own culture and heritage. First settled in the 1840's, and a town since 1865, it has long been a center for agriculture. Over the decades, it has been renowned for citrus and today it is the Avocado capital of the world. However, in the last two decades it has also become a center for the arts, with an art school, a museum, several art galleries, a well-known dance school, and frequent concerts by visiting symphonies. The historical downtown area is a visit back to the 1950's-few cars and friendly people. Residents are an interesting mixture of farmers, retirees, and small businessmen with few commuters because of its isolation. It still retains its rural atmosphere, and many residences on the outskirts are on 5 to 10 acre lots with Avocado groves. It is surrounded by mountains and has two major river valleys on its North and South boundaries. There is a wide diversity of wildlife, including 400 species of birds, mountain lions, coyotes and the occasional bear.It has great year-around weather, since is 15 miles from the Pacific and is influenced by the nearby mountains. We have lived in Fallbrook for 4 years, having lived previously in Del Mar, Oceanside, the Bay Area, and upstate NY, and we are very happy living in Fallbrook.[read more...]

Beautiful area - 6/24/2006

Housing prices have skyrocked in the last few years as in all the Southern California area. Fallbrook is in my opinion one of the best places to live in Southern California. You are about 25 mins from the beach. Generally speaking it is cooler (up higher) if you stay to the Bonsall side of Fallbrook. Many avocados are grown here. In some areas macadamia nuts too. One of the few places in Southern Califonia that the houses are on decent sized lots. Many houses are on more than one acre. Vacant land is hard to find--most has been developed or is being developed. It is much less conjested than surrounding areas. The Bonsall Elementary school is awesome. The middle school (Sullivan Middle School) is "o.k." I'm not thrilled with the high school. If you child is in advanced placement the classes are a little better. Very high utilities -- especially water. Everything is about a 20 minute drive.[read more...]
