| You get what you put into it. - 9/7/2012
Late 30's and early 40's couple with 3 children under age 6. We have lived and traveled the country and chose Sebastian as an excellent back water area to raise our children, for now. We stick to ourselves so have no problems of gossip and trivial issues you get with the majority of small towns. We don't drink so we have no issues with drunks or drug drama. I researched the schools and chose the best rated public school and moved into the district although there are many charter, magnet and private schools to choose from. If you are active in your childs education, I feel you can find what you need. What brought us here? Peace and quiet. I walk outside in the morning and I hear nothing. The vast amount of wildlife is amazing. I fed Sandhill Cranes from my front porch, watched Dolphin pods feeding at the riverfront and many more experiences with nature that really just bring you into the now. Insects, that's another story but is why we have exterminator and screened in porches. Rude Nyers? You don't say! That's a given anywhere in FL. I find most people can be rude no matter where I've lived, until you kill them with kindness. If you surf, you come to Sebastian. If you fish, you come to Sebastian. If you're a native from South Florida, you come to Sebastian. But please don't take my word on it. This is one of Florida's best kept secrets and I prefer to keep it that way![read more...]

| I prefer it. - 2/15/2011
I moved to Sebastian in the summer of 2009 and do not regret it. The housing crash has been tough on Florida but it is what made the move possible for me. I bought a brand new, 1850 square foot, cbs home in an underdeveloped gated community about a mile from the Indian River Lagoon for $135K.
I have read other reviews that complain about rude northerners, drunks, and traffic. I was surprised by the number of northerners but have not found many, or perhaps even any, to be rude. Drinking is commonplace on the waterfront. No, you are not going clubbing in Sebastian but there are a lot of watering holes. Think middle age wannabee bikers. The older folks, and there are plenty, tend to frequent restaurants earlier in the day but are gone by nightfall. In fact, most of Sebastian closes early. I do not find traffic to be much of a problem either. Sure, when the snowbirds arrive, things get more congested. Contrary to another reviewer, I have not observed much speeding. On the contrary, the elderly sometimes tend to slow the pace down. I find driving Route 512 to be frustrating but that has more to do with the time lights.
Sure, summer gets hot, though I was acclimated by my second summer, but the other season is incredible. The beauty of the region is tough to beat. The lagoon, the inlet, the preserves and parks...all wonderful. The eagles, ospreys, owls, otters, raccoons, bobcats, gators...likewise.
Would I move? For the right job in a somewhat rural area with four seasons and hills, yes. Till then, I am thoroughly enjoying Sebastian.

| sebastian is horrible - 5/14/2010
Sebastian Florida is horrible, filled with rude ignorant people. Drugs and drunk drivers. I'm 3rd generation Floridian and am looking to get very far away from this insane little piece of hell. If you do end up here DO NOT hire local contrators. Want to sell to a family from liberty city miami, maybe they can teach these rude people around here some manners... Too many people from New Jersey New York Rhode Island Long Island, that have no clue what Southern Hospitality or Southern manners are about... Come On Here Liberty City, bring your furry to these asses.[read more...]

| drunkin town full of nuts - 6/9/2009
this palce is the worst palce I have ever lived, the main reason I am on Sperling is to do double research on the next place I get. I'm stuck with my home until the economy is better, but that will not keep me from getting myself and my son out of here before school starts. There is nothing to do unless you drive to the ugly town of vero, although if you like getting drunk in bars there are plenty of those, The schools are so over crowded, teachers over worked. Moving to this toilet town was the worst thing I have ever done.
People are ignorant, everyone gets in your business because that is one of the other things that people are good at here. It is a nut house, high taxes, and impact fees and a lousy local government, city officials, and school board. The people here drive like they are in a big hurry to get to one of the only stores in town. Walmart or Bealls outlet, medical well most of them are quacks, you would really need to got to another town. It so sucks here.[read more...]

| Sebastian Florida Great place to live. - 11/17/2008
Sebastian is a great place to live we have lived in 11 locations from N.C to Texas, Kansas, Chicago, Michigan etc and nothing compares.
Theres always something to do and the only draw back is the bugs in the summer months, we have more than our fair share of no see'ums.
The inlet area is one of the coolest spots in the south., the fishing is second to none.[read more...]

I tend to agree with Sharon, however, I've been in the county for 20+ years, 12 of which are in Sebastian. Its expensive, but worth the cost considering the alternatives. Sebastain is truely a small town and worth the time to visit or consider residing in. JMHO[read more...]
