Rent is too high, people are isolated and unsophisticated. Unless your Mormon or want to become Mormon, you're really not welcome here. The economy is oil, which means big booms and big busts. The nearest good sized city is 2 hrs drive. Vernal really has nothing to offer- not even a mall. If you like shooting things, riding ATVs, joining religious cults, and shopping at WalMart, then you will love Vernal.

It sounds like Tanis is a little bitter. Vernal has lot to offer, it's a great location if you love the outdoors. The Uintah mountains are its back porch. There's great hiking, biking, X-country skiing, exploring, boating, fishing, hunting, whitewater rafting, etc. The people in Vernal are generally nice. There are many religions represented. But Tanis is right, if you like big cities, lots of lights, no stars in the sky, wearing fur, eating $50.00 steaks, and pretending like you are better then the unfortunate souls who like to live a little more slowly, then Vernal is not for you and you are certainly not for Vernal.

Your last sentence totally cracks me up, LOL! I live in Wyoming - from what you have described, Wyoming should annex Vernal.....

Living in Vernal, UT - 6/9/2010

I have lived in Vernal for over eleven years now, and I am tired. It takes a strong person to deal with the difficulties of life in the Basin. The People are clanish, only dealing with their own kind. People here drive worse than anywhere that I have ever seen, from Atlanta, Ga to the California coast. This area has Beautiful views and the Uintah Mountians are great. The Climate is very harsh. Summer is Hot, Winter is COLD!! I'm saying twenty to thirty below zero degrees F. Wintertime lasts from Mid Oct - Mid May, if you don't believe me look it up on any weather website. The wind blows (20 - 50 mph)at least three months a year. There is no noticable spring, and fall is a couple of weeks long. The water is really good tasting, but with all the minning and oil & gas drilling that probably will not last too much longer. The cost of food and gas is more than other places in nearby Colorado, and Utah. If you want any competitive prices on household goods you have to drive at least two hours east or three hours west. This town has a few good things, but a lot that are terrible. That's my opinion.[read more...]
