| 6 Month Review - 11/6/2012
I am from the Midwest where the weather is bi-polar. I moved out here in the summer and all I have to say is the weather is to die for. It is almost always sunny and it's never too hot. It has only rained about three times since my move as well. I think the number one reason to live in Long Beach is for the weather. [read more...]

| On My Way Out - 11/28/2011
I certainly prefer Long Beach to Los Angeles however I am just about over it all together! We moved here 3 years ago to be closer to my husband's family and this is a very hard place to just be. California is one hell of a rat race to begin with and when they say it's who you know - they must have been from California. I have been fortunate in the two positions I have held here (the first cut from the state budget)in that I knew the right people. Anyone who thinks otherwise is truly naive. I was promoted within my position over 200+ applicants because of who I knew. It's disgusting and I have seen 4 others within the organization promoted the same exact way. The cost of living is absurd - I can say this because I have lived on each coast and I know what my $ got me in each place compared to here. The schools are horrible - where I am from you don't need a "school of choice" or a lottery because every school is highly ranked. There are many wonderful places to visit however, when are you supposed to do that between earning a living and commuting and exactly how are you to pay for it with what you earn and what things cost i.e. housing, utilities, food, gas etc.
This would be a great place to visit but unless you are quite well off and not I lease my Beamer and pay on a mortgage I'm talking ownership, life isn't as golden not to mention how cut throat these people are. People are rude because they are mad as hell, they are tired and overworked and underpaid amongst other things. Southern California is a place like no other and while I do love the snow free winters, I try hard to ignore what the smog is doing to my young child's lungs. This is not the place to come to start anew - there are too many other places to go in this country. Have a serious game plan, nest egg and resources if you do![read more...]

| I'm ready to leave - 8/17/2011
Being born and raised in Southern California I have been used to our high quality of life for a long time. That, however is changing. Higher costs to live, ever increasing government regulation and interference at all levels is diminishing the desire to stay. I don't see much that leads me to believe it will change any time soon so I'm starting my search for a better place.[read more...]

| Lots to do in Long Beach - 8/18/2010
There are many different ethnicities sharing Long Beach and this enriches the recreational and cultural activities here in Long Beach. Each culture offers unique restaurants, festivals and celebrations. Additionally, many cultures have established museums and neighborhoods. Since Long Beach is on the Pacific ocean, residents enjoy beaches, boating, jet skiing etc. Lastly, due to its location, Hollywood as well as many other cities and attractions are minutes away from Long Beach. Long Beach is wonderfully tolerant as well and is home to diverse cultures as well as gay, lesbian and transgendered folks. Its a great place to live and play because of that.[read more...]

| Mellow Hidden Gem of SoCal - 3/30/2010
Long Beach has it's drawbacks, certainly, but after a year here, I don't miss LA nearly as much as I used to. Long Beach has an equally diverse (if smaller) demographic, and tons of the East Side vibe I loved in Silver Lake--at a fraction of the cost. What Long Beach loses is theater scene, it makes up in music, and what it lacks in sheer numbers, it makes up in a neighborhood feel.[read more...]

Hello!
I don't know if there's anybody who can answer me but I'll try anyway.
I'm not from California, not even from USA. I want to try to solve with my visa and everything to come and study there in 2011 maybe. Can someone please tell something about studying there ..? And mainly at California state University? What are the costs of tuition and especially the costs of housing?

| Love living Long Beach - 10/10/2009
I'm a "transplant" from the E Coast to Long Beach since 1995. When people have negative things to say, it is generally to do with the few "bad areas" which, unfortunately, every city has these days.
There are so many diverse sections of Long Beach, you can really feel like you're in an entirely different place / get a different experience by just driving a few blocks. I for one, miss the options of mass-transit, and Long Beach has done a great job in the downtown area of giving people options to walk..and catch a free or super cheap shuttle to get to the next stop. Add the boat options, a zillion restaurants and things to see, and I enjoy taking my visiting relatives on new tours. There are still things I haven't done. Yes, the housing is over the top. We were lucky enough to buy in a down time, but it seems the schools are good (no kids-I don't know) and you can do anything you like within about a 10-15 min drive. Wow..I sound like I'm running for Mayor..but I really do love living here. Come visit![read more...]

| Long Beach - 6/9/2008
Long Beach is just too expensive for the average person. Housing is in a good part of town is astronomical. I am a teacher and owning a home here is just a dream for me. I can barely afford the rent. $1900 for a 2 bedroom. Have to pay a lot just to live in a safe area. Schools are great....district has a great rep. in SoCal. Enrollment is declining though because so many young families are leaving SoCal and CA altogether because of the cost of living. Crime and gangs are a problem. Very multicultural city, can't beat the diversity of the people and attractions. So many things to do ....that is one of the great things about LB.[read more...]

| Quality of life - 1/1/2008
The cost of living has become astronomical on an average budget. The main reason I want to leave is the overcrowding. The population in Long Beach alone increases each year, and the mix of cultures is great, but no one seems to have any manners anymore. The weather cannot be beat. It is temperate most of the time, but the people outweigh the climate for me.[read more...]

| we're fleeing Long Beach! - 12/9/2006
unfortunately, this place is too crowded and expensive for most people to own a home - even with the real estate market 'crashing'. We're taking our skills and moving on - unfortunately, a lot of good teachers are, too.[read more...]

I use to live in Long Beach for 3 years..and loved it except for the parking issues, and the occasional "hostage" situations on my block, at the time my 11 year old daughter was attending an OC school,But I am considering moving back to LB from Portland Oregon, I use to live near 2nd/Falcon in the Alamitos Beach area..it seemed like a safe gay neighborhood..I loved it..BUT if now I am confused where is a good area, especially since I am moving there with a section 8 voucher...I am concerned about a decent apartment in a decent area of LB and how bout middle schools? or jobs? help me..and advice is great![read more...]
