We moved our young family to McHenry in the late ninety's. Having grown up closer in to Chicago where cultural offerings are abundant, we continue to miss the void in this area the most. This town won't even invest in a community rec/fitness center. The building which houses the library was actually donated by a local businessman when he moved his company to another site- a city referendum to fund a library was voted down twice. Definitely good ol' boys country. Now that our kids have finished school (not great stats in this area either), we will definitely be getting out of Dodge!

McHenry County, Illinois: 25th Highest Property Ta - 10/11/2012

I was transferred to Northern Illinois and I made the disastrous decision to put down roots in McHenry County, IL. As noted above, property taxes are the highest in all of IL and 25th highest in the country. The county government is dominated by Republican good old boys who milk the government for all that it is worth. The sheriff's department has been subject to federal investigations into corruption. McHenry County is classified as an exurban community and as such property values have plummeted with no recovery in site. The county government is bloated beyond belief and county employees enjoy pay and retirement benefits far in excess of the norm. Bottom line: Stay far, far away from McHenry County, Illinois[read more...]

recession has crime on the rise, abandon and forec - 7/12/2010

I've Lived in McHenry for over 23yrs and it is still not that bad of a place to live at. However, Crime has been on the rise, heroin and coke are a real problem in McHenry County. Surrounding cities like Woodstock and Wonder Lake have terrible crime along with gangs, they show no signs of stopping. If you ask me it is only a matter of time till almost all the suburbs of Chicago are just like the city. If you look through out McHenry we have shut down businesses and foreclosed homes with an abundance of graffiti...it's starting to look like the ghetto.[read more...]

being a veteran of McHenry for over 20yrs. McHenry is a alright place to be, but heroin and coke are major problems there...crime is on the rise, doesn't seem to show a sign of stopping. We are becoming just like all the other Chicago suburbs. Properties that are abandon or closed down, continue to be on the rise.[read more...]
