"Tough choices as a family in SF"

Tough choices as a family in SF - 1/5/2008

We've been living in SF for eight years, some of the best years of our life. SF is truly amazing. The food, culture, outdoor activities, people and neighborhoods are world class. We've recently increased our family to 4 and it has put tremendous pressure on our commitment to living here. The cost of living is exorbitant and public schools a mess. We now are struggling with whether we love SF enough to live in a smallish house with no yard and spend all of our money on private schools or to find a cheaper place where we can have plenty of space, good schools, and save our disposable income. I don't think there's a right answer.

Wow...we are in just about the exact same position Mdial. 4th kid, love the city, but also find lots of crappy things about it (for families in particular).

The people I know that have exchanged their equity from the sale of their homes as a family to move inexpesive to a popular southern city somewhere like atlanta, where you could buy several 300,000 dollars spacious houses or condo's from the sale of a home in S.F., Cal.; and the retired ones I know and who have talked with who are native san fran people 20 years residents, are giving atlanta, ga A+ ratings living high dollar on peach tree in atlanta, georguh. the ones under 40 are crying mad, STAMPING their feet, can't get a job, and can't stop complaining with their vocal cords stretched out everytime I call to chat with them from memphis, because they can't walk out of their atlanta city home to go get the paper and all that wonderful food S.F. has within a few steps. I've been told , nothing compares to wonderful New york and san francisco in regards to culture, weather, and food. If i had a family I think I'd move to canada or switzerland. St paul minnesota is suppose to be most wonderful for the family's and it has excellent transportation inregards to public transportation and great culture and such.

I could not see living in SF with children. Move down the peninsula or over one of the bridges.
