Liberals, Looks Nice, White People - 7/23/2020

Moved to Austin in 2012. It's 2018 and I'm sitting at my apt hot tub talking to these 2 college girls. I ask them why they like Austin. They tell me: 'It looks nice!' 'We're liberals!' 'White people! Pretty much summed up my experience of Austin.

Hopeful but Still a Bit Overrated - 7/9/2020

I'm pretty torn about Austin. On one hand, people are casually polite and courteous but on the other hand fairly stuck up for no reason. However, bar and restaurant staff are really friendly for the most part - and that makes a huge difference compared to where I used to live which was the opposite (Denver). It's definitely fairly easy to live here with access to tons of bars and live music venues. Food here is OK but not terribly exciting. Food Trucks seem to be the core of good eating for the most part. I'm also definitely extremely impressed by the quality of health care at hospitals, specialists, and whatnot. Nobody seems to talk about that. Facilities are really clean and straightforward as well (even during COVID-19). As for the other people who live here: a little too snobbish & aloof for my tastes. People are really cliquey and it's tough to meet friends overall. I think the worst part are some of the management people that run apartment complexes. That has really taken a toll on my experience here. They're just a bunch of panhandling liars who want to suck up cash from people with it from NYC or California. Dating here hasn't been particularly impressive and fairly hard - and without any good reason either. Just many cliquey & boring white women who are plain, picky and strange. Something is just off with dating here, even though it could be paradise if they stopped being so rigid and weird. The weather is hot for a substantial part of the year - but you'll also see freezing cold and windy days. You'll also witness a quite a few days during the spring where you'll constantly have to monitor potential Tornado Warnings. Sometimes in the middle of the night. As for the heat, it's easy to get used to it as long as you stay out of the sun. Overall I think Austin has potential, but it's particularly boring & especially now that everything is shut down again. There really isn't a whole lot to do at the moment except sit in the A/C or go out for a walk or ride a bike. That's not really cutting it for me at the moment.

Homeless skyrocketing Traffic, everythin Expensive - 5/4/2020

I've lived in this City for 2 years with my wife, moving from cold cloudy Boston in sunny Texas. Living here we have noticed that weather is not as steady as we thought, although is lot warmer than Massachusetts lot more sunshine and drier climate. City offers a lot of opportunities, jobs, outside sitting caffe's and cool restaurants. Here you will meet few respectful people that will make your day and while driving in the city in beautiful sunny day get cut off maybe 3 or 4 times from rude drivers that make absolutely no sense and don't belong behind the wheel. Here is the only city in the World that after calling 911 they tell you do you want the police there? And police never shows up unless you call 2 -3 times.. Rent and house prices are absolutely over expensive. Traffic is horrible due to infrastructure. Highway 35 is taking forever to be finished by contracts that are milking our tax money and elected politicians that don't set deadlines and fire the contractors. These streets and Highways are not built for this overcrowded time. They all need quick repairs , additional lanes or ramps but noone cares. The worst in Austin is the infestation of this beautiful city with very rapidly growing homeless population which are around 2600 and rising according to an official. You go to a store and in front you have homeless, you go to post office you have camping homeless greeting you, you stop at traffic sign and you get paraded from a homeless holding signs and acting like VIP between cars, you walk downtown with children and every street you get stopped and asked for money from them using dirty and offensive remarks if you don't have a pocket full of dollars to reward all of them. The new towers are being build every block making the skyline look cool. But noone cares for traffic these towers with 12-15 floor garages and numerous employees which with their cars, will cause... Austin needs to fix roads quickly, clear and end homeless issue by giving them shelter away from the city and making it illegal the panhandle, need more cops on the street and highways that stop and discipline aggressive drivers. This must be done for the future for our children.

Austin: A Geographic Example of Dunning-Kruger - 3/1/2020

I have lived in this dump for nearly three years and I am counting down the days until I leave. I moved to this dump in the fall of 2017 to attend UT, which is admittedly an excellent institution. It's a world-class university about which I cannot say enough good things. That said, UT is a rose surrounded by a manure field. This dump is overcrowded to the point of absurdity. Apparently no civil engineer was consulted when "leaders" decided to grow the city at all costs and not consider infrastructure whatsoever. Forget being a bicycle commuter to beat the traffic. You're basically taking a gamble with your life if you are biking or walking due to the recklessness of drivers in this dump. The bus system is not completely awful, but do expect to be crammed into a bus next to the dregs of society, namely hipsters who don't wear deodorant and have their pits smelling like an anchovy's vag. There is a useless rail system which only serves the north side of town. The cost of living is ridiculous. I have heard asinine arguments about how because the COL is not as high as SF or NYC it is somehow reasonable. It must be nice to have the privilege to make such a contrast. Unless you want to rent in a slum with high levels of property crime and low standards of living, expect to pay around 1K for a substandard studio apartment. The real estate market, which I admittedly have no direct experience with, is, on paper, BS. 350K is the median price. I guess its better than SF, right? Gentrification is a problem, especially in East Dump. Completely overrated food scene. Disregard anyone making a recommendation in regard to food. I guess to the rubes who move here from Ohio or Missouri the food is exotic, but anyone with a discerning palate knows the food is dog crap. The taco arrogance here is astounding. I can get much better tacos back home in Dallas. Further, the folks I work with from the Rio Grande Valley, who know their tacos, have said the tacos here are a joke. It takes a real piece of work to cook lengua and have it turn out tough rather than tender. The people are, by and large, rude and pretentious. Yuppie marketing and tech majors who fancy themselves the new elite dominate the city. This ain't the Dump of yesteryear, if it ever truly existed. There is no "down to Earth" element to be found. In fact, the people I've bonded with the most have been those who have seen the decline firsthand and agree that there is a major class conflict undercurrent which permeates society here. The cognitive dissonance here is astounding. Imagine whining about newcomers when you've been here a whopping two years after moving from New Jersey and applauding this dump becoming a "sanctuary" city. The music scene, which I admittedly have limited interaction with, has nothing I couldn't get back home in Dallas. ACL is now an overpriced yuppiefest and the few venues I've been to were garbage as well. Don't waste your time on Dirty 6th or Rainey St. Now comes the part where I get downvoted because "I just don't get it" and how I'm "just a miserable hater" because I don't buy into the Cult of ATX. There must be something wrong with me personally because, well, how could anyone not love this crowded, dusty, dump of a "city" that has live music and breakfast tacos? I obviously didn't experience the "real" Dump. If one is coming here for UT to get an education, I say go for it and then GTFO. If you have that "grass is greener" feeling when considering a move here, ignore it. You will only experience disappointment.

This City is for LOSERS - 2/18/2020

Been here 6 to 7 months and already planning on moving back to the West Coast. The biggest turnoffs have been apartment and condo associations who lie through their teeth (especially CA transplants like myself) just to make a buck. Although it's cheaper than the coasts, so does management going along with it (ignoring maintenance calls for bugs and not taking ownership for regular defects). It's stressful and would be illegal in California - but then again it's Texas so they can get away with it I guess. Other than that - Other mainline things are harder to get in Austin than CA like access to good Mechanics and Doctors. Dating here is also freaking stupid too. Most of the Women here have their head shoved so far up their a** you'd think it be Miami or something (EG: Bumble is *Crickets*). Traffic is also dumb with ridiculous lane and road closures and people driving big trucks and cutting people off. Heck, even the Postal Workers lack accountability here. The only pro I can say is that the service industry and food is pretty good. Cost of Living isn't a total rip off either (EG: Denver is Worse with way more White Trash). Bottom Line: People are indirect, not friendly, immoral, judgemental and stupidly liberal (all at the same time). I'll be elsewhere by the summer, but wish I gave more of an independent start into trying DFW or Houston as they both seem like bigger and better choices. I'll even take L.A. again over Austin and pay rent until I'm 40 over this place. The mental backlog of living here is just taxing and stressful - the people here are just not very nice AT ALL. Even the students near the UT campus where I live seem to be selfish pricks. The only places I found to be more depressed in were Denver and NYC area, but maybe I'm a weird breed. Either way, this city is going to Hell fast and most people can tell you that who live here I'm sure.

Austin has enough to be what you make it. - 11/19/2019

Oh the haters. I cant decide of they just hate life OR if they are trying to post negative things to keep the invading hordes away. Anyone game for the truth, well my version of it anyway. 1> Lots of things to do here. I like an active lifestyle- hiking, boating, getting outside the walls. This place is great for that except in summer. Then just go to the lake. Yes I know its crowded. 2> The people are what you make of it. Yes some are rude, some are very friendly just like anywhere else. There are some fine human beings in this town from all over. Maybe some posters here need to work their angles. 3> Growth and Sprawl : Yes its a problem and a big one. The road and transport system is for a city half this size. Austin has a gov that is more concerned with buying hotel rooms for all of the homeless than fixing real urban problems that effect homelessness to begin with. They are totally reactive instead of proactive to the point of feel-good only progressive insanity. As a result in less than 2 years Austin has become dirty and unsafe. Not long ago it was very clean and buzzing with action, now you see tent cities among the building cranes. Strange !!!! 4> Property Taxes. They are terrible and out of control. This is the greatest threat to Austin and Texas's future growth. Yes its true Texas doesn't have a state income tax but what is here is not working. Texas needs a balanced Colorado style approach. This is why I am leaving and it is a shame. Lots of cool stuff and people here but unless Austin can find a way to manage its growth and its budgets it is going to have some serious headwinds in the future. 5> Allergies are terrible thanks to three plant species. A. Mountain Juniper aka Cedar its starts around Christmas and last to around Feb 10. Evil stuff B. Oak ~March 10 to around April 20th. This beautiful tree can make you sick. C. Ragweed ~Sept 15 to Nov first. We all know about that stuff.

Austin is overrated - 11/13/2019

Moved after a week. It’s a crowded, busy, expensive, dirty place to live. I don’t understand the good reviews of living in Austin. To get to work it was over an hour each way from round rock to Austin. I got honked at for letting a pedestrian cross the street, evidently I was expected to run them over. My co-workers were expected to work from home due to the Austin traffic. Property taxes are very high, even in small towns 30 miles away property taxes were around $800 - $1,000 per month. Most people can not afford to live in Austin so they look in small towns outside of the city. Even in small Historic towns like Georgetown You can’t get away from the crush of people & traffic. It’s all tore up with road construction & toll roads are the norm. For lunch it was $80 for BBQ for four people & not a lot of food. Everything is brown and dirty looking nothing green or pretty. If you don’t enjoy crowds, traffic or the high cost of living you won’t like Austin.

Austin Does SUCK! - 10/27/2019

On Man! Where do I start??!!! I have been here going on 8 years and I have SEEN so many changes. Very pretentious!!! Like a little LA (it has been dubbed.) I am middle aged and this is not for people in my age group. Plus, almost ALL of the Iconic Austin Haunts (that made Austin...Austin) are going away. They either cannot no longer afford their rent, or their property taxes have become too high. I.e. Threadgill's, Hill's Cafe, Nutty Brown (people are complaining about the noise), Maria's Taco Xpress (her property taxes are thru the roof)...how long is the Saxon going to be able to hang on? Anyway, I am making steps for my exit (as many of my friends are.)

Growing and changing fast... it - 9/18/2019

Austin isn’t perfect by any means, but it’s great for people in their 20s or 30s who work in tech. Rent is pretty reasonable, especially compared to the other major tech hubs (SF/SV, Boston, and Seattle). Real estate is getting pricy, but again, it’s a steal compared to the big cities of the Northeast and West Coast. Your salary will go MUCH further here. Nightlife is excellent. There are five or so bar districts (depending on how you count them), and you can find virtually anything you’re looking for... except for upscale dance clubs, for whatever reason. Austin is a bar city, not a club city. The nightlife is still light-years ahead of cities like Denver, Seattle, or Minneapolis though. Cityscape/transit: Austin is also the fastest-growing city in America, and one of the most obvious effects of this is its changing urban form. City planners have placed a high priority on increasing density, so five-story apartment buildings and condo towers are replacing the single-family housing in central neighborhoods and along major thoroughfares. However, the vast majority of residents still live in single-family houses, and the public transportation is atrocious. You will absolutely need a car, which is a shame, because the traffic is awful. The road infrastructure was designed to handle about half of the city’s current population. Thanks to local environmental ordinances and neighborhood opposition, roadway construction/expansion takes forever... when it happens at all. Crime: The homeless population has exploded in the last several years. In June, our UNBELIEVABLY moronic City Council legalized camping on sidewalks and harassing people for money. I’m not joking. Because of this, certain parts of downtown have effectively been taken over by the homeless. Pedestrians get robbed/attacked in broad daylight. Last month, a homeless guy attempted to mug me on E 6th St at freaking NOON. In fact, because of the bars/nightlife, a few major downtown streets are actually safer at night. Career: You can’t beat salary to cost-of-living ratio here, but if you’re hyper-ambitious, you’re better off in the Bay Area or Boston. No real surprise there. Scenery: Austin is bordered to the West by the Texas Hill Country, pleasant rolling hills with plenty of trails. If you’re from anywhere west of Denver, it will look pretty boring to you. There are two lakes (Lake Austin and Lake Travis) that are hugely popular for recreation. Downtown has an excellent grade-separated hike and bike trail, roughly a 10 mile loop. No e-scooters allowed on the trails (thank god). Schools: Austin has maybe the best public schools of any major city in America. There are private schools too, but it’s rare to meet anyone who went to one. There’s just no need to spend the extra money. All-in-all, it ain’t a bad place to live. Especially if you’re young and you make a decent salary. [My background: I grew up in Austin, left for college, and moved back last year for a job.]

Stay away from Austin TX. - 7/22/2019

Austin is absolutely the worst city I have lived in. It used to be a clean, safe city 20 years ago. NOT anymore. Austinites are the rudest people on earth, especially the young drug addicts who now dominate Downtown. Amazon and Google are the only two real employers, so most Austinites are unemployed or very underemployed. High violent crime rate and homeless rate. I moved away in early April and I am very happy I did. Don't move here, don't listen to people who like it. It is horrible.

Austin is AMAZING! - 5/31/2019

I lived in Austin for 6 years and loved everyone. Of course, the weather is hot and humid but everything else is great. They have all the best restaurants and food. I loved it so much and would move there in a heartbeat. I think everyone should go! And if you do, go to Rudys. It is to DIE for! We went every Saturday and I loved it so much. Austin is Amazing.

meh - 5/31/2019

Been in Austin since 1998 so to most residents I'm practically a native. I've always been ambivalent about Austin - the weather can be crushing. It gets hot here and stays hot. Like summers they nickname "100 days of 100," meaning 100 straight days of 100 degree weather - yikes! And unlike other areas it doesn't cool at night, maybe down to 80. It does get cold in the winters, briefly. Mosquitoes are a problem. If you live near any trees or landscaping or water, you'll have those big vicious "Tiger" mosquitoes; you know the ones that carry Zika and West Nile. Housing is expensive; renting will eat your paycheck and buying (provided you can find something) is better but still expensive - since the state doesn't have income taxes, they get their revenue from property tax. My property tax nearly doubles my mortgage payment. Renters don't fare better because the landlords pass the cost onto their tenants. Work is plentiful if you have anything to do with the tech industry. Coders have an especially good pick of jobs and there's a healthy semiconductor design sector too. Academics also fare well as long as you're in the top of your field. UT is a *huge* school and employs a lot of people. If you're unskilled or a liberal arts major you'll probably have to settle for a lower paying job. But traffic? Austin traffic is some of the worst, per capita, in the US. Early on the city fathers decided *not* to build any east/west freeways so getting across town is done on city streets (I kid you not). North/south commutes are limited to two large freeways that carry the bulk of commuters. My former commute of under eight miles took a little over 40 minutes at 10am in the morning. Infrastructure in this town is sagging. You've probably heard the statistic of 120 people moving to Austin per day. That number has dropped to 35 - but - the surrounding counties are now experiencing the population boom. What this means is that Austin just can't keep up. Grocery shopping? Not enough grocery stores. Need a new computer? Not enough places to buy. Going out at night to clubs? Streets packed shoulder to shoulder with drunken revelers. Restaurants? Always a wait.

The truth vs the hype about Austin - 4/10/2019

The only people who are happy in Austin are its repugnant millionaires. The job market here in virtually any sector besides tech is no better than the rest of the country - but cost of living is waaay higher. The rent on my 350sf studio apartment has gone up THREE times in the past two years and now costs me $1200/mo. Cost of water bill for 1 person averages $70/month. If you own, property taxes will crush your soul, they're nearly the highest in the country. Traffic is a ceaseless nightmare in every inch of Austin, and everything is crowded and ludicrously expensive. Thanks to our ten billion population of fire ants, you'll never be able to sit or even walk on grass if you move here. But don't worry, the four inch long flying Texas roaches and scorpions provide a distraction. Sperling's positive climate rating of Austin makes ZERO sense -- it's between 95 and 115 degrees every single day for SEVEN months out of the year. I can't wait to leave this hellhole.

It use to be better here but it looks so trashy now. It amazes me how it is rated so high. Maybe because there is a lot of things to do. Health care is so-so not the best. Houston has better a few hours away. It is humid and hot in the summer. Guess it might be better then some places, let me think. It is Not a place to retire!! but good if you work I guess. This city is for the younger generation. Nice to visit perhaps.Austin has lost it "Austin weird vibe that I miss. Too many people moving here from somewhere else. So differant here now... I miss the "weird austin".. I call it "Austin-china"! Tooo crowded!!

Fun place to visit but terrible to live in - 1/31/2019

I lived in Austin for about 2 years and have various thoughts about the place, which some are good and bad. The Good -Fun culture. People like to go out and party alot. Alot of cool bars. 6th street is famous for a reason. -Alot of high quality apartments. I had a pretty nice apartment and even the ones up north in Round Rock (town north of Austin) are pretty good. -Fairly established tech industry thanks to Michael Dell who's invested alot into Austin. -Lots of sunshine, never cold here too often and no winter (if you dont like winter that is). -Growing city that isnt slow paced. Things keep getting built and more people keep coming (which may or may not be a good thing) -Lots of very good parks. That was probably my favorite part about Austin is how well designed the parks are and the whole Springs in the middle of them was neat. -Lots of cool festivals like SWSX and a bunch of others. Way too many to list but you get the idea. Now for the bad, which sadly is alot longer than the good The Bad -Austin sadly is not a city that can grow very well due to lack of infrastructure. Austin will become like Phoenix or Dallas in that it will be very overcrowded due to not having good public transit or enough urbanization. It would normally take me up to an hour to drive home from work and I only worked 11 miles away. People keep moving there and the city doesnt seem to really care on how to handle it. -No cultural diversity at all. Its mostly White people and Spanish people here. I barely saw any Blacks, Asians, Italians, Jews, Irish, Muslims or anyone whos not baptist. Austin's "Chinatown" was more like a shopping center in the hood, which I found to be quite sad. Only the White native Texas are really thriving in Austin and I say that as a white person since I dont see minority groups here doing too well due to the cultural atmosphere. -Work culture is pretty terrible since its trying to be too much like Silicon Valley when the infrastructure and culture isnt there in Texas. Texas is right to work state and a state known for poor wages. I was making 30-40k a year, which is pretty hard to thrive off. Most people I knew were making the same, maybe a little more. Even working for a place for 2+ years the wages dont scale very goo. -Cost of living makes zero sense. It costs as much to live in some parts of New York City as it does in downtown Austin, yet Austin doesnt have as much culture or as much of a stable economy to offer. Its cheaper than Cali but everywhere in the country is cheaper than Cali. -Austin still has the title of being a city for "slackers", which is very true since everyone here wants to just party and never work. Nobody here seems to really care about what they do for living and is more interested in living like they did back in college. Professionalism is a lost art here. -Food is the most overrated thing here. The places I ate at here that were good here were chains that were in other parts of Texas. Torchys for example is amazing but you can find a Torchys anywhere in Texas. The Taco Hype is not real. Most of the tacos here taste like crap. Tacos are done more justice in any other Texas Metro than they are in Austin. -Politically Austin is liberal for Texas standards but not as liberal as the west coast or the north east, which shows in that the city doesnt wanna commit alot of money to infrastructure or trying to diversify culturally. It doesnt surprise me since Texas is one of the most conservative states in the country and even being liberal in a red state like this doesnt mean much. -The obvious 100+ degree temperatures. Some people may like extreme heat. Im originally from Florida and I couldnt handle it but this is different from person to person. Overall, Id say Austin is a cool place to visit but its an extremely difficult place to live. Its still light years behind the rest of the country and with the influx of people, I dont see how quality life is possible here. Its even harder if your not a native due to the way the culture is in that outsiders are not embraced here. Id say if you want to check out the festivals or want to come party here then just visit for a week. Dont try living here since its not sustainable.

Welcome - 10/24/2018

The Austin area has been home to me for over seven years now. After college at Texas State in San Marcos, I fell in love with the laid-back, fun, easy going, chill vibe that central Texas encompasses. I also love how friendly everyone is! And more importantly, I love that everyone has a dog and takes them everywhere! Perhaps a more simple moment of happiness, but I love going for a run at the Lady Bird Lake and seeing so many friendly wagging tails! Which brings me to why I am personally so confused at the sheer disgust and hatred in other people's comments about

Austin RACISM Alive and Well - 10/14/2018

Austin is a racist toilet, lived there for 3 years and can tell you its a fact, ugly town so ended up leaving. I didnt see much racism towards blacks because the whites in Austin have realized that blacks will make a fuss if they are discriminated against. So they pretend to be friends with blacks out of political correctness. Keep in mind that Austin is a historically racist town (the highway system was built to divide the races...so those people who built that system, their kids have now come of age and the racism is engrained in their upbringing and they continue the tradition (despite them saying otherwise) So the racism you see is toward Mexicans, because the whites have figured out that the Mexicans will not put up a fuss and demand equality if discriminated against since they are from Mexico, likely illegal and scared of being deported. Its funny how Austin loves the Mexican food, Mexican culture, will use the Mexicans for cheap labor, but they hate the actual people, funny how that hypocrisy works huh. If you are an educated Hispanic and have more money and a better job than whites you will be hated in Austin because the white racists in Austin think that Mexicans are supposed to be used for hard labor (like digging ditches, lawnmowing, construction etc. since that is what their parents taught them) The whites will tolerate Mexicans for this purpose and use them to open up a white owned business and use the Mexicans as cheap labor for max profit (you can see this with construction business, moving businesses, landscaping, homebuilders, apartment builders, roofers, flooring and things like that). So when they see that you're an educated Hispanic with money born and raised in the US and university educated with a successful career it goes against everything their racist parents taught them (which is that Mexicans are dumb, and poor and to be used like slave mules) so Austin racists dont want to believe that a Hispanic is successful and will try anything to put you down, stop career advancement, talk behind your back etc in an attempt to put you in what they perceive as "your place" Some Hispanics cave into the pressure of the racist tactics and try to become white by acting differently in which case they are accepted by the whites as "converts", but NEVER respected. But if you remain who you are they will try and railroad you out of their hatred for your race. Overall I would avoid this trashy town at all costs, not even good for a vist and let them wallow in their own pathetic hatred. The people in Austin are low class trash through and through.

Nasty s***hole - 10/2/2018

I used to live in Dall-ass and have been to Austin 6 times over the span of 10 years. We recently reconsidered relocating to Austin. My sister graduated from UT, which turned her into a smug, liberal, know-it-all, yuppy-scum monster. We decided to pay her a visit, look at properties and consider relocating. Many of you reviewers are spot on! Austin is a filthy, disgusting city filled with puke puddles from Congress right into 6th street. Lots of strung-out homeless. People dress slovenly. I've never seen so many men in flip flops! UGH! Witnessed a man from my hotel room stumble drunk and vomiting out into the street. Airport was run down. Dirty, old looking buildings. Nothing was new or shiny. Giant frat town. Let's not forget INSANE property taxes. $15,000 on a $350k house? No thanks!
