air quality - 1/13/2010

I live betweeen the beach and south padre island drive, about 50 yards from the beach, most of the time there is a breeze off the ocean. I feel great, from all the sea air, its clean, and fresh. I don't know about the validity of the sperling report that gives us 29 out of 100 on air quality, maybe he was staying under bridge or beside the refinery or road, but personally, its the best air I have ever had, I would rank it 99.9 out of 100

Hot and humid. Allergies and asthma. - 5/9/2009

Very hot and humid. The mold and mildew, combined with the cedar and other allergens in the air aggravate SAR (Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis). I've lived in a lot of cities, but have never witnessed so many people that have been diagnosed with asthma.

Trashy city by the sea - 4/3/2009

Corpus Christi calls itself the sparkling city by the sea. It is sparkling if you like excessive number of tall outdoor adverting billboards and store signs destroying the skyline views. This town is full of people who do not care about thier homes or environment. There is trash floating in the water, all over the parks, along the beaches. People do not take care of their homes. Property taxes are the highest in the state at 3.3%. Home owners insurance highest in the country. High electricity at average of 15 cent to 25 cents a kilowatt. Houses are cheap if you don't mind nasty neighbors. Houses located along the only pretty area of Corpus (Ocean Drive) are expensive but not bad for being so close to the bay. Just don't pay attention to the trash in the water and along the shore. Corpus also have many abandoned buildings which the city government will do nothing about except for spending tax payer's money on consultants. We have been here a year and ten months and dislike this deteriorating city by the sea. I work for the federal gorvernment and my pay is the same as when we were in North Carolina. Our disposable income dropped in Corpus Christi due to the high cost of month to month expenses (taxes, electricty, water, insurance). Even with a state income tax in NC, the month to month expenses were much less and NC is much prettier. Corpus is too windy, hot, humid, dry, dirty and boring. Nearest place for excitement is San Antonio which is 150 miles north. I do NOT recommend Corpus Christi. Positive: It does have the best water access for the public in the country. Just look out for the glass and trash.

Most people don't give Corpus a Chance - 1/29/2008

I moved here a little over a year ago, knowing no one or nothing about Corpus Christi. I had lived in Coastal cities before (San Diego, Pensacola) and was pleasantly surprised by how pretty the bay area downtown was. I took the first job I was offered (no, it did not pay $5-7, it was about $10 and hour) and worked there until I could corner a better position. Afte a few months and a couple interviews, I was offered not one, but two jobs that paid well over the median income of 20,000. Many people expect to step into town and get offered the dream job at dream pay. What people fail to remember that even though jobs pay less, the cost of living and housing are far less than the US Average. The Cost of living here is on average 10-12 points below US Average. And Housing is closer to 20 percent lower. There are downfalls here- crime is worse than I would like, and there is little nightlife for the under 30 crowd - but I like it. Work hard, network, and you will find a nice life here in Corpus.

Corpus is not so bad! - 12/13/2007

No matter where you go you will never find a place that is perfect. Corpus is a good place to live. It has it's negative aspects, but on the other hand it is growing in so many ways. We have really good schools, and one of the only schools that is located near a beach. There is things to do, maybe not as much as bigger cities, but we are getting bigger with each passing year. Our mall is expanding, we are getting more shopping outlets. All and all, maybe corpus is not the best (yes we have stupid wanna be thugs), but it is a good place to live. You do not have to rich to have a nice place in a nice neighborhood either. STOP COMPLAINING!

Very High Crime - 10/3/2007

I spent one year living in C.C. I grew up near Los Angeles and have lived in Atlanta, Denver, San Antonio and NEVER experienced any type of theft. My third day in Corpus and my car window was smashed in and everything stolen from my car. Two things made this very disturbing: 1.) it was in broad daylight by a crowded mall and 2.) EVERYONE in town I talked to about it stated that they too had been the victim of at least 1 (usually 3 to 5) break ins themselves. The police actually asked me what I expected them to do when they showed up (2 hours after I called). There are too many jellyfish in this part of the Gulf to make ocean playing safe and the heat and humidity are extremely oppressive in the summer. Additionally, if you are white or black you will be discriminated against and treated like garbage. Better brush up on your Spanish too because English is very seldom spoken there (most signs and store product labels are only in Spanish).

Why Corpus? - 8/26/2007

To put it bluntly....this place sucks!!! The only good thing about living in this town is that you can go to the beach. There are not any good waves unless there is a hurricane in the gulf. You cant make enough money to live in a nice place. If you are going to move here I hope you are rich...unless you want to live in town where there is a lot of crime. Downtown sucks, there is nothing to do. This is the meth capital of the world and there are always wierdos walking around looking like zombies. This is North Mexico. Dont expect people to know English either

What I think about Corpus christi After 4 years. - 8/16/2007

Let me start by saying I've lived all over. Corpus has a laid back feel about it. It worm most of year and hot and humid during summer months so if this is your thing you will like it. To me I like change in seasons. I don't care much for seeing the same streets and builds day in and day out but for other it's creates a sense of security. But that's part of Corpus Christi. If you are educated, have business interests you would most likely enjoy the great housing prices how ever you may feel insulted by your pay if your from any area like the east coast or Cali. So you take the good with the bad. Many young people tend to get educated and leave somewhere else others feel compelled to stay with family for one reason or other. I've seen better personally and have also seen worse. All in all if you want to relocate somewhere for a few years, visit, or retire, Corpus may be a spot to consider. If you don't have any skills, former education, money, or business experience you may not like it here because your wages for service and labor jobs are around $5.15 to $7 an hour but most on the lower end. If your doing labor jobs or service work at these wages rent in a decent place my feel expensive depending on what your use to paying as well and how many bedrooms your looking for, if your not limited to this pay then rent may seem cheap a one bedroom in a nice place will cost you 475 on the low end and $900 on the high end and more if you what to live out by the beach.. If your with out wheels you will not like the public Transportation either in comparison to Metro like on the east coast. I recommend having or getting wheels if you don't have them. The city has many homeless for some reason or another which becomes annoying after awhile. I think some of this is do to wages for uneducated jobs. Being close to the boarder and the population being mostly Hispanic is most likely the factors involved in the over all economy here since you have many worker both illegal and legal who are working these jobs to send money to family's in Mexico. However, if you are educated are financial secure you wouldn't have any problems. However you may end up taking a pay cut depending on what you do for living and your skill occupation. Business owners and entrepreneur do well here no matter what business you want to start or bring. If your visiting or are on business you will like it and the little crime that happens here compared to bigger city's will make your visit feel more secure

Think Twice before you move to Corpus - 7/20/2007

The data provided by this web site and others will not provide you with a realistic view of the City of Corpus Christi. Because the state and local taxes (especially property tax), the high cost of personal insurance coverage for home and auto, and the hidden costs of education are not included in these statistics you will be greatly disappointed when you arrive to this city. This city has little competiton for groceries. One chain dominates the entire town, hiking up food prices. The lack of prosperity in Corpus is connected to the lack of industry (other than tourism). Jobs are attainable but unless you are a lawyer or a doctor you will most likely be working for $5.15 an hour. The crime is also much worse than published. This would include both violent and non violent crime. The unrepaired streets, schools and abandoned buildings are an eye-sore and a safety issue. Unleashed dogs and drug dealers wander neighborhoods. You will just end up wondering where your enormous tax dollars go. People leave this city the minute that they graduate from college or can get a transfer. Think twice before you make the move.

Housing is NOT cheap in Corpus - 5/4/2007

If you think housing is cheap Corpus, think again! You will find any extra money left over from your mortgage eaten up by high property taxes and high insurance rates. Corpus gives you very little for your money when look around at roads needing repair, high crime rates, overcrowded schools, and monopoly grocery stores. If you want to go to work you better be sure that you are a doctor or a lawyer otherwise you are looking at little opportunity and minimum wages. Corpus cannot keep college graduates because they move out of the area to find decent jobs after they graduate.

corpus sucks - 3/20/2007

I have visited corpus. It sounds like a great place. So fun and tropical. When I got there, the place is swarming with illegals who no speckon the english. The beach, YUCK! Trash, oil, questionable floating stuff??? But, I put on my game face and decided to make the best of it. I waded in the water for a moment and was knocked off my feet several times by the constant rip tide. So, I did my best to keep to the surface. I noticed a few jellyfish around me, so I went out a little father, to get away from them. I was DETERMINED to boogie board! I was mid-body deep in water, and the jellyfish attacked! I felt painful stings all over my back, legs and arms. The tip tide made it very hard to come back to the shore, and on the way, I stepped on a stingray! Thank God it didn't barb me! I felt it slip out from under me feet, and saw it swim close to the surface when it made it's escape. I brought vinegar, in case of jelly stings. My Great Grandpa always warned me to do that. Thank God I listened to him! It relieved the some of the stings from the jellyfish . I have scars from the stings, 10 years later. I will never go to Corpus again! I found out later, that Corpus is a strange bay, it has a very unpredictable surf and rips all the time.Junk washes in from the ships and boats. It is FULL of jelly fish...I don't care WHAT some people say! It's jellyfish season from March thru October! Over 100 different species, including the deadly Box jelly, Man-of-war and a few others that are deadly. It's a popular spot for shark sightings and stingrays. Wish I had known that before I went there!

Education Statistics are misleading, perhaps inacc - 2/21/2007

As the husband of a CCISD teacher and parent of three children who have survived the CCISD system, I have to laugh at the 15 to 1, student - teacher ratio. Are they counting the custodial and lunchroom staff, the administrators, specialist's, para's and secretaries at each school, the bus drivers and perhaps even the district employees who work at the downtown puzzle palace? None of my children have ever had a 15 to 1 ratio. None of the classes my wife was ever responsible for had a 15 to 1 ratio. It was Will Rodgers, Mark Twain or someone else who stated: "Figures don't lie, but liars figure." I would urge anyone using the data to verify it independently by speaking with teachers privately. I also advise the folks at BestPlaces to cross check their data. Bob Beanland

Love this weather! - 2/19/2007

As the entire Country is either have flash floods, 12 feet of now, fires, tornados, hurricaines and worse, we enjoy beautiful year around weather. Over 30 years ago our area experienced a pretty severe hurricaine which had contractors building safer and sturdier homes when replacing those destroyed. Out of everything bad something good can happen and Corpus Christi has been working and continues to work to improve infrastructure, boom has been on for new homes and more people come to our area when they discover our Corpus Christi which the secret is out that we have lots of opportunities and year around fantastic weather surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico. Affordable living, friendly people and lots of growth will be taking place when more and more visionaries find us.

Visionaries Wanted Here! - 2/19/2007

I bought my Island home and moved to Corpus Christi, TX 5 years ago because I saw a City with great opportunities if you came with an open mind, an entrepreneurial spirit and vision.I grew my business. Made friends. Increased my investment in my home and am now looking to buy a bigger home. This is a great City with still very reasonable home prices to be either right alongside of or very near the Gulf of Mexico. Terrific restaurants and inexpensive fun activities taking place all over the City which are listed in our Weekender section of our Caller Times.Volunteer activites and welcoming to get involved whatever your interests. Friendly folks who will return a smile if you have one to give. Great distance to travel to San Antonio, Austin, Houston or even Laredo for a day or weekend, yet not live in all the hustle and bustle. Anyone can go to an over populated area that pays more than our City in various careers, find you need to live outside the City because you can't afford to live near your work and then be stuck in traffic every day for hours. Or, you can improve the quality of your life and come to our City where you can kick back, enjoy the beach, bring your positve input with you and leave the comparisons of where you came from behind.

Corpus Christi isn't Utopia, but what city is? - 2/6/2007

True, CC has its problems but overall it's a nice place to call home. Mild winters, relatively low cost of living and mostly friendly locals makes CC an inviting and hospitable location. The local Chamber Of Commerce and City Council have reasons for wanting to keep its growth slow, too much all at once would make it a boom town and it would lose its charm. Nobody wants or needs a Miami West.

Just say "no" to Corpus Christi - 1/18/2007

Lived in Corpus Christi from 1977-1989 would never consider living there again. High unemployment, low pay, rust, oppressive humidity. Palm trees are pretty to look at, but they don't put food on the table.
