Weather - 2/4/2008

Variation between the seasons is beautiful - Bright fall colors, snow in the winter, colorful springs, and bright summers. Thunderstorms in the spring and summer can be strong but are not usually extremely dangerous, so it is enjoyable. Spring stays cool with gray skies, and is often wet. Sometimes, going back and forth between a winter jacket, and summer shorts. Summers tend to come suddenly around June. Summer can become overwhelmingly hot and muggy at times, requiring air conditioning for reprieve - not simply for pleasure, but nearly a necessity. Allergies can be tough in early and late summer, depending on individual sensitivities. Pollens are usually high in the early summer, and ragweed is very strong in late summer to early fall. The hottest months here are July and especially August. September usually brings some weeks of pleasant weather. Moderate temperatures, lower humidity, and the days are still fairly long. By mid-October however, the autumn, begins to have weeks of rain and gray skies. Depending on the year, this can sustain or squelch the beauty of the leaves. Sometimes snow may begin in October, though it is often only a light dusting. The remainder of the fall season is usually crisp and cold, though not bitterly cold. Winter is strongest December through March and though we do have some days of sun, it is sometimes a week or more between them which can be somewhat depressing. Snow can fall and create messy road conditions which are usually cleaned up fairly quickly. Occasionally (usually not more than once a winter) the snow will fall so intensely that roads will be bad for 2 days before being cleaned up. Temperatures hold between 40f and 10f usually, but there is often a wind chill factor. Weather here is often affected by warm humid fronts from the south and cold dry Canadian fronts. In the Dayton area, it is commonly known that there tends to be more snowfall, and stronger springtime storms north of I-70, while south of I-70 will still receive inclement weather, but not in the same severity.

Grew up here, moved away, moved back, want to move - 9/3/2007

I grew up here, moved away to Akron/Cleveland, moved back here and we are looking to move away from this area for good. Dayton/Metro? eh, Not much to offer. The only good thing about Dayton is there is an airport so maybe the natives can get the heck out. a small handful of the people you meet are plesant but most are crude, rude and lazy either that or snobby and rude. The local news is mostly who killed who. The economy is weak, the healthcare is laughable and the overall quality of life isn't the greatest.

Dayton = Depressing - 4/6/2007

Reading some of these glowing reviews of Dayton is shocking. Dayton proper is dirty, old, and full of homeless people. I don't recommend spending any time in the downtown area. The alleged highlight is the "Oregon District", which consists of crammed old houses on poorly maintained cobblestone streets. The businesses in the Oregon District consist of bars and adult book stores - a real draw for the losers of Dayton. If you have no choice but to move to Dayton, try looking in the eastern Dayton areas of Beavercreek, Kettering, or Huber Heights. The best part about Dayton is the cost of living is low. Other than that the crime rate is terrible, the town is ugly, and the winters are cold. Stay away unless you have no choice.

Dayton is one of those "best kept secrets" - 1/16/2007

Although I've lived in the Dayton area most of my life, I've traveled to many parts of the globe. There aren't many cities that have the excellent quality of life we have here (I've been stuck on the 405 in Los Angeles for hours--that would never happen in Dayton!). We have one of the best art museums in the United States--highly-rated on all accounts, open 365 days a year, and it's FREE! We have the United States Air Force Museum--again, a wonderful place to visit, and it's free. You could spend a week in there, it's so extensive. Carillon Park, run by Dayton History, is a mini Greenfield Village. It has a Wright B Flyer exhibit that was actually designed by Orville Wright himself, not to mention all the many diverse exhibits that are laid out in a beautiful setting, not far from downtown. Huffman Prairie, where the Wright Brothers perfected powered flight, is a fascinating place to visit, as is the Wright-Dunbar National Park site. Our healthcare facilities are second to none. We have Sinclair College; Wright State University, with an up-to-date medical school; and University of Dayton, with an excellent law school. We have the largest Air Force base in the world, and we're bringing new high-tech jobs to Dayton. Speaking of technology, Dayton has always been a hotbed of invention--the electric starter, the electronic cash register, even the poptop can was invented here. We hold more patents per capita than any city in the USA. We have our own Opera company, our own Philharmonic, Ballet, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (known worldwide), and many other theatre and performing arts organizations. More condos and lofts are being built/rehabbed downtown, and there are plans in place to build many more. We have a new ballpark, and our very own Dayton Dragons team. It's easy to get around, there's plenty of public transportation, and you can find a place to park at a reasonable price. You can be almost anywhere, even in the suburbs, within 30 minutes. We have churches, schools, nice neighborhoods, good shopping and very friendly people. I know Air Force retirees who have actually chosen to retire in the Dayton area after having been stationed here for a short time during their career. You can spend $1 million plus for a home, if that's your desire, but there is affordable housing for everyone. Our cost of living is reasonable. Dayton, Ohio and the Miami Valley really is a wonderful place to live. Check it out!

Should be more..... - 7/17/2006

With Dayton once the center of American ingenuity you would things things here would be better here....great Universities and local community colleges, yet the downtown is dead.....sure there's a lot of entertainment....but no place to eat, and yes there is Riverscape.....but once you've seen it...the Metro Parks are super.....but there is something missing....after events everybody goes home to the suburbs and closes the window shades. In my opinon if Wright Patterson wasn't here this town would sink back into the riverbank...I moved into an older neighborhood with the idea I could "rescue" it and was rewarded with break-ins and thefts...cops are under staffed looking drive-by shooting suspects and talking to 20 "witnesses" that didn't see a thing...sad....I don't care what the officals say, there is a definite difference between the West side and East side, with poor white trash in the middle....It's not "Greatin Dayton" (a slogan they once used) People with money just move further out....big difference since I landed here in '76 ............manufacturing used to be the backbone here for the blue collar crowd, now the white collar people just turn there nose up at the idea that we need manufacturing jobs here, and the rest of the lower class just sits on the porch drinking a beer that was paid for after stealing and selling my car stereo..........if you need to move here, go to the local small towns outside of Dayton, Tipp City, Troy, Springboro, Beavercreek, Brookville........Stay out of Springfield, I worked there several years......crime worse than Dayton and none of the benifits.......

Don't like the weather, wait five minutes, it'll c - 5/19/2006

It is not unusual for the morning to start with snow and the afternoon to be bright and sunny. Changes of 10 to 20 degrees a day are not unheard of. Here, in "Sinus Valley", it is no wonder why residents speak with a nasal twang. Summers are hot, sometimes, and winters cold, always. Rain is prevalent as in the last eight days we have had thunderstorms with occational hail. People with joint aches or back problems are more inclined due to the quickly rising and falling of the barimetric pressure.
