Beauty for a price! - 10/16/2009

Flagstaff is a great place to live. Especially for those who love the outdoors. Many rereation opportuities within the city as well as the surrounding area. A very difficult place to make a liviving. Housing prices are unreal. 40-60% higher than Phoenix. Bring your money with you is the message.

Flagstaff - 8/4/2009

Its hard to choose just one category, but truly Flagstaff has a small town feel and an amazing sense of community. I chose culture and recreation over the others just because there is so much to do and see, over things such as quality of life although it is good, and low cost of living.

future growth in Flag? - 6/23/2009

Does anyone know why Flagstaff has never grown to nearly the size of Tucson, when it's not as hot and a very disirable place to live? I would like to move their but unless it grows their aren't enough jobs.

Flagged Out - 5/12/2009

As a long time resident of Flagstaff I feel qualified to say it ain't what it used to be. Train horns blast incessantly day and night causing us not to be able to open our windows at night in the summer and waking us up all night long. Cost of living very high, wages very low. Unresponsive city governemnt to citizen's needs. After 30 years here we're moving to another State. You can have the pine tress-that's all Flagstaff has left of itself.

Flagstaff's climate - 9/23/2008

I have lived in the heart of Flagstaff since August 2005. I grew up in Buffalo, NY. We had as long a winter in 2007-08 as I can remember having in Buffalo, and I grew up in the 50s and 60s. Flagstaff has a good deal of sunshine, even in the winter, but also can have a good deal of snow. It definitely has cold and very cold days days in the winter, and cold days well into April and even May. I am leaving this area because I want to be able to hike, walk, and camp year-round. Flagstaff's 6,900 elevation characterizes this climate as cold.

Outdoor Wonderland - 8/17/2008

Whether you want to stay in your own backyard, walk about town or take a day trip, your options seem almost limitless. Flagstaff is surrounded by natural beauty and amazing places to visit. As you walk or ride about town, you're able to catch glimpses of the magnificent San Francisco Peaks. It's just a short drive to Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater and Sunset Crater. How about a day trip to Grand Canyon? So many choices, never enough time, when you live in Flagstaff.

Flagstaff is beautiful, but expensive. A nice place to visit, but hard to live here.

Flagstaff - A mountain town - 6/27/2008

What was once a large mountain town is now a small city. Property prices here are above average, and the market is nfluenced by both the influx of "Californians" seeking alternative lifestyles and by second homeowners. The surrounding area, including the San Francisco Peaks on the Coconino NF are nothing but magnificent.

Plusses and minuses concerning Flagstaff's climate - 6/13/2008

I moved to Flagstaff in August 2005 in order to take a graduate forestry degree. The past 3 years have had increasingly colder, snowier, longer winters. If you do not mind a cold, generally windy to very windy climate during certain months, you will like living here. We had snowfall several times this May, albeit just an inch or two. For those of us who want to be able to hike and camp as often as possible, and wear shorts as often as possible, we feel trapped indoors from Nov 1- April 1, even longer, as far getting to do those things. What can make the cold weather tolerable is the great number of sunny days throughout 12 months. Still, I plan to relocate to a much warmer climate. I lived in overcast Buffalo, NY, for 21 years. Except for the abundance of Flagstaff's sunny days, the general coldness of Flagstaff's winters, and the number of months it stays cold in Flagstaff, the November-May weather here rivals Buffalo's, although we have not been getting as much snow. Flagstaff's elevation is 7,000; the deciduous trees in the Northeast and Midwest bud around 3 weeks before ours do. Feel free to contact me for more information.

Flagstaff Pluses and Minuses - 5/6/2008

Prior to choosing Flagstaff 13 years ago I heard the oft mentioned description "poverty with a view" This is true for some but not for others. Look carefully at the job market for your own field. If you have a job Flagstaff can provide great quality of life. Outdoor recreation and beauty is endless. There is lots of culture for a small town- theatre, music, and many other things you'd expect from a university community. It is very much a live and let live place with lots of diversity. It is an open-minded island in a state that is largely very conservative. IMO weather is nearly perfect. Four seasons but none extreme. Very dry so if you like humidity you won't like Flagstaff. Virtually no mosquitos, fleas, or ticks. Very health conscious mind-set (non smoking active folks) Traffic is minimal- if you're from a big city you'd laugh at what we call rush hour (more like rush half hour and limited to only a few roads.) There's a small airport and it doesn't cost much more to fly from Flag than from Phoenix and much less hassle and time. Very charming downtown with lots of great restaurants, art galleries, and independent shops. Yes we still have big name stores and shopping mall for those who prefer that. There are downsides to every community and Flagstaff is not perfect but nearly so.

inconsistent snow - 8/7/2007

i lived in Flag for six years to go to school. the snow is most heavy in the spring, but no where as "fun" to deal with as in say, our michigan, all but the heaviest dumping, melts in a couple of days when the sun invariably shines however,be prepared to do the slide and shuffle on days of 12 plus inches wherein few peepole know how to drive in it even though they own a 4x4 and the local snow removal experts seem to take their time allowing it to disappear the natural way, melting, indifferent to your wk/school schedule. so it makes one slow down and enjoy the beauty that surrounds. when driving, resign yourself to the fact that you will be late and probably catch a train on the way. also the towns folk tend to be very friendly and open as it is forward thinking progressive college town and they are most likely students from elsewhere and will be moving away after graduation as it one of the most expensive locales in the state to reside. no offense to locals but'Poverty with a view" by students was the fitting phrase after it was innudated by west coasters ,those buying second and third vacation homes, and subsequently being named in money magazines best places to live in the nineties, begat a 264.000$ ave.home price, thereby making it less than an ideal residence for those graduating and looking for a home.

how's winter in Flagstaff - 7/8/2007

We are highly considering moving to Flagstaff but can anyone describe how's winter there? How much snow and how long it stays? We are moving from Michigan and obviously we are getting tired of harsh winter. any info.? please. Also, I will be interested and concerned about racial descrimination issues if there are any? Are the people nice? Thank you so much for anything you can share. We just want to make sure we will be doing a good move. Thanks.

COL - 7/2/2007

Flagstaff cost of living is high in my opinion. A small 3 bedroom home in a so so neighborhood can easily run you 250K. Sales tax is also high, it can run between 8-10%. Property taxes are reasonable compared to most places. But for raising a family, you could do a lot better. My wife would prefer to stay at home and homeschool our children, but it is almost impossible to do that for us. I would need to be making at least 80K in order for that to happen, and jobs that pay that high a salary are rare in this town. There are a lot of positives about the town, but we cannot afford to live here much longer.

Mostly a nice community - 4/21/2007

After living here the past 8 years I have to give Flagstaff mostly high marks as a good place to live. It offers more in the way of culture and diversity than most towns of 60000 residents and there are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from within a short radius. Climate is great except for the winds in the spring. The only negative is the town has a serious litter problem which no one seems to address and transients are EVERYWHERE in the summer begging for whatever.
