Prescott sucks! Not what it used to be... - 1/9/2016

Ive lived here since I was 14. When I first came to this place, it was a nice little city compared to where I used to live (Buckeye, AZ). But my views have changed 100% over the past 10 years. There are way too many people moving here for this small city. It takes me 30 minutes just to drive 8 miles from PV to prescott! In Phoenix, I can just hit the highway and be where I want to very quickly. If there is a traffic Jam in PHX, there are plenty of detours to take, but not in prescott. The residential streets are always surprisingly busy! I thought I moved to a quiet part of town but there are cars going up and down the street every single minute. The cost of living is pretty high and the job market is terrible. Good luck getting a job here, even with a college degree. There are simply not enough jobs going around for the population here. The night life sucks, there is nothing to do here. Not a place to live if your not retired. Even if your retired, its not a quiet place like it used to be. Im starting to see gang tags on dumpsters here in PV. Its turning into a mini Phoenix with no highways, teens on drugs, and old people everywhere. The weather isnt as great as people make it sound. Its gets up to the 90s in the summer and down to teens in the winter. And if its not hot or cold, its windy! There are huge 40 degree shifts in temperature going from morning to afternoon during the summer. I drive to work with my heater on and when I leave, im using my AC. People act like this place is so awesome and its not.

Potential Resident - 1/2/2016

WOW! I'm a bit confused. I see someone name Matt, Carol, In Unbelief stating nothing but negativity about Prescott. Sounds almost like NIGHTMARE On ELM STREET. Yet other have posted beautiful reviews of this city. I sure like the conservative view and values and of course pro-gunners as I enjoy hunting even at my age. My husband and I are trying to sell our 2100 sq ft, 9 acre in Benson and I would love to move closer to the Northern end of AZ, closer to Calif border and some friends in Topock. I guess I'll have to do a lot more research and contact perhaps Calvary Church in that area to get some in person, honest views or contact another reviewer. We'll come up this spring to spend some time there and check it out. Thank you for all the rveiws

General quality of life in Prescott - 12/20/2015

I am thinking of relocating back to Arizona after supposedly settling north of Portland OR. Too wet. Way too wet. I invite all comments about Prescott and the surrounding area. One concern that I have is the availablity of water longer term. I lived in Surprise for about 5 years and could not stand the heat. Thanks, Jim

Prescott has a small town feel - 12/14/2015

Prescott has a small town feel, with a courthouse square in the city center. This is unusual in the West. Most Western small towns are strung out along the main road, even Bisbee and Sedona. Flagstaff is too cold and gets too much snow. Prescott is 1.5 hrs North of Phoenix, so you can get to the big city if you need to. Prescott is surrounded by National Forests and is close to all kinds of tourist destinations. Prescott is over one mile in altitude, so it enjoys all four seasons including brief periods of snow. There is a lot of community spirit here and tempers sometimes get hot because we all want what's best for Prescott and we don't always all agree. But what we have is far beyond what you will find in most small towns. Summer time is tourist season, and it seems everyone in Phoenix comes here to cool off. All summer long there is sometimes interesting going on in the square, from karaoke and dancing to free music and art shows. Prescott is Arizona's Christmas City and it's a popular destination for people from all over the world looking for a small town American Christmas. On Acker Night every business in town opens its doors and entertains visitors with live music and cookies. Prescott has a lively, mixed population of college students, retired white collar workers and working blue collars. Prescott is full of hunters, tree huggers and transient groups of kids getting themselves clean of drugs and alcohol. Whiskey Row is still a little dangerous, and Prescott is still a safe small town full of ordinary folks. Prescott is for town folk, Prescott Valley is for suburban folk, Williamson Valley is for rich folk, Chino Valley is for ranchers, and Paulden is for outlaws.

Thinking of moving here.... read this. - 8/2/2015

I do not suggest anyone move anywhere unless you have a calling to go somewhere or have had signs to go. Sounds strange but this place is strange too and the people that come here ,for the most part, belong hear. They love their national anthem played on the radio... they stop what they are doing while it's on to pay respect to it like youre supposed to and people hear are for the most part very conservative. They love their guns and quads but don't like the noise ,the restaurants here are not great so many people just stay home and cook. The visitors and passers-bys make this town look hopping in the summer but it all dies down in the fall when vacation is over so don't be fooled. There are a lot of homeless but there's a lot of churches here too that help. I mean this is a huge christian,protestant,lutheran,Mormon based community. It's like that disco song here "there before the grace of god" get it? Businesses here are grouped together wich will be this towns diwnfall. Dentists are all next to eachother and if you don't live need one too bad. It's an unorganized town that has no business sence and this is a huge no if u own a business and want to thrive. After all, this is why the east coast has more money than the west,this type of grouping things together lessens spending for all local businesses not just the grouped ones.This is a great place to vacation and get away but I have seen small towns all across the usa and think that there might be a town like this in your backyard and you might not even know it.

my 3 years here in prescott area az - 6/14/2015

wow what a joke! just read what people say from this area about "not letting the door hit you on the butt when you leave" or "if you dont like it leave." sorry folks but that kind of thinking is why were headed to world war 3. i admit im not the richest person in the world and i came here with little but i had hopes and ideas and a dream of a better life. that was shot down two weeks after stepping foot into this joke of a state. I have been homeless here in the area for 3 years now sense you cant find any kind of deposit help or rent help to get you started no matter how hard you try pray or beg, and also because when you talk to people about what your dealing with or trying to do, they turn it into something totally different.People try to run you off the road here, there plain idiots. There is absolutley no law enforcement unless your caught doing drugs, murder, or rape etc. other than that hec drive 60mph in a 35 no one cares. annoy your nieghbor with loud trucks and nosey-ness, walking through your property, letting your dogs deficate where ever they want. Its sick.Im hoping to get out of here asap but this is the desert and it sux you dry and there is no way to replenish. its a joke. ive been turned away dang near everywhere ive tried. So you want to move to airzona??? think again my friend. if you do it may be your last mistake. if you dont have ac in your vehical deffintly dont move here. if you dont like being alone and broke and hot and miserable then i suggest this place isnt for you. i write this to warn anyone that plans on moving here....dont! take my word for it. its like being stuck in a nightmare you cant wake up from. And they should change things and people in power should change things but they wont. i could say alot more but i think this is sufficiant. If you want to pay 450.00/month plus deposit for a bedroom then come on down you would probably fit right in but if your the other percent of normal people stay as far away from here as possible. thank you and dont bother to comment on this post and be nasty because i dont care:) have a nice cool daY

Hidden Gem - 4/27/2015

Prescott is truly a hidden gem. You won't find a town that is more welcoming and friendly. There are always activities going on at the downtown Courthouse square. The climate here allows for outdoor activities year round and the trail system is extensive. The town hosts a huge mountain biking event each April, as well as the Whiskey Row Half Marathon. Hiking, running, mountain biking galore. People that move here, tell me that this is the best town they have ever lived in and that the residents are so kind. The small town atmosphere is evident. Prescott was the territorial capital in Arizona and has some wonderful architecture and a very rich history. Once you stop by this small town gem, you will want to call it home!

LOVE PRESCOTT 15 yrs. now! - 2/26/2015

Best little town to live in and RELAX! I bought a home with gorgeous views of the gorgeous mountains near the Courthouse and it's non stop activities and all the great restaurants and shops. Super Organic Food Grocery stores, Yoga, I played tennis at Yavapai College where I also take classes. Made new friends at the bank invited me into their Bunco group, such fun....Weekends I love going to the Prescott Valley Flea Market, well known all over the Southwest for some amazing finds, take the dog everywhere, so dog friendly....Parks, hiking trails, great location 1 1/2hrs. to Phoenix, 4 to Las Vegas. NO big Airport to smog up the town. Art Galleries, friendly people, I met wonderful others from Ca. and Washington, Boston and New York, all delighted to find the quiet Bliss of Prescott. The History of this area with photos of Wyatt Earp on Whiskey Row, great upstairs saloons for Seniors like me to dance the night away. Plays, movies, good doctors, no traffic, freedom at last. I felt it was the place to settle out all my stresses, but I bought a great Commercial place in Prescott Valley anyway it was so perfect. Driving to Chino Valley, to Skull Valley and it's famous grocery store, there are still great parcels of beautiful empty land in this gorgeous state. The Weather in Prescott is divine, with all four seasons, but only light snow...clean air and sunshine. Prices are very good for Real Estate, food, etc. and the relaxed life style was only on my Bucket List before I found Prescott. My dog can't wait to get out and play and walk the Courthouse park with all the other canines and friendly owners. Tourists show up in the summer adding a nice mix of new happy faces, and helps the local economy. Great place to live if you work in Computers or other work from home businesses. Prescott is a slice of heaven to me. There's a great Adult Center with exercise classes, the Sunday Buffet on top of the mountain overlooking all of Prescott is a must. Being grateful for all I am and all I have here makes me want to greet the day every day with a big smile.

DREADFUL PLACE - 12/12/2014

Worst drivers in the world. Accidents and deaths almost every day in the quad-city area! High % of elderly who can't even drive or park between the lines - - get in the fast lane and drive 5-30 MPH UNDER the speed limit. Very high % of alcohol drinkers and smokers. Dogs and their poop everywhere. You need to know that there are more than 160 "recovery" (from alcohol/drug addiction) and half-way houses in the town. One of 30 beds occupied in Prescott is in one of these places. Only 2-3 of these people will make it to 3 years without relapsing! Many homeless people and people begging for money all over town. One of the "treatment" places charges #30,000 per month. Old people vote against any legislation to help schools. Two elementary schools are closing very soon. Can't imagine why anyone would want to raise their children here! Many people who have lived here all their lives and have had the same job are in total denial about this town. Rental rates and deposits are unbelievably high here and decent jobs are impossible to fine. I've met more bosses and business owners who lie, drink or use drugs at work, pay minimum wages, or no wages at all than I have run into in Phoenix and Tucson together! The police can't keep up with all the crimes committed, because their aren't enough of them. The turnover of City employees is above 17%. Yes, I'm leaving as soon as a good job is located elsewhere. P.S. Don't move here especially during Holiday Season, because that's when all the druggies will relapse and in Jan. this town will be filled with just tons more of them!

Thinking of moving to Prescott Arizona? - 9/7/2014

I was in that boat a lil' over 5 years ago & moving here was one of the best decisions of my life! Coming from California, I immediately felt Prescott's down-home, hey y'all feeling. From the courthouse in the heart of town to the historic Victorians, out into the mountain pine communities & down through the frontier with horse properties & small farms there's a vibe of community, a 'common-unity'. I see our nation's Golden Rule in effect. I have kids who are still kids; they get to be their age. The weather's always good....Monsoon's are awesome this time of year! Blue skies year round and stars that touch the earth & stretch to forever. Prescott has a 'Night Sky Ordinance' so our slice of heaven will never outshine the night sky & suck up our solar system. I just think Prescott & the surrounding towns are the bee's knee's :) Come on over & check it out! I'll personally give you the tour & introduce y'all to the neighborhood :)

The weather - 2/22/2014

Everybody tries to tell you that Arizona has great weather. Not true! While it is true that it doesn't have the devastating winters of the Northeast or Midwest it is still cold in much of the state and it is DRY! I mean DRY, DRY, DRY! Winters are cold and dry unless you are in Phoenix. Summers are HOT and dry everywhere in the state. Spring is windy and cold for the most part. Fall is the only really nice weather and it is stunning! Mild days, cool nights and a little moisture. It is just too short. Only about 8 weeks and then it is cold and DRY, DRY, DRY again.

Phoenix to Prescott? - 7/22/2012

My fiance and I moved from California to Phoenix, AZ last year. WE can not stand it and surprise, surprise we are now expecting to have our first child at the end of the summer and our lease goes up shortly after that. We have learned we are not desert people at all, we miss the deep greens we saw in Cali and the nice weather and high elevation. We can not afford to move back with the crazy cost of living and found out that there is mountain like town here in AZ!!! We took a drive up there just yesterday and thought it was really cute and loved the weather and the look of everything. I am now skeptical reading the angry NY's post, As far as intelligence I don't think it could currently get any worse. But the drugs worry me, I just want to be able to move somewhere that is cheap because we do not have a huge budget at the morning but is also a great place to raise a child. When we took a look I saw kids playing everywhere outside, which I do not see here in the metro areas of Phoenix so I assumed it was a safe family oriented town. Is this place an upgrade from Phoenix? I just don't want to spend another year in a place I hate.

prescott's climate - 4/13/2011

lots of spring winds and some of the higher pollen counts come with it...summer is great, with some monsoons - tho' w/ the global warming, we're having less rain and more drought. fall is great and winter will bring wonderful storms that leave snow behind in the higher elevations of town...which melts away in a matter of days. LOTS of sun! bring your sunglasses!

Why I Love Living in Prescott Arizona - 2/15/2010

There are so many reasons why I love living in Prescott Arizona. One of the main reasons is the climate. Prescott Arizona offers four mild seasons. Winters bring some snow...just enough to get excited when it does snow. Springtime blooms with flowers and apple blossoms. Summer temps are perfect, about 20 degrees cooler than the Phoenix area on average and you might even need to grab a sweater after the sun goes down. Fall is probably my favorate season of all. Growing up in the Phoenix area, I never really experienced the "changing of the leaves". Prescott bursts with color between October and November. The colors blended with the backdrop of Thumb Butte or Granite Mountain is enough to take your breath away!

We have found the Jewel of the Southwest - 10/30/2009

After a three year exploration of where we wanted to live across seven states from Colorado to California, we found a place that we just keep loving more and more. Although far from overlooked with a solid population of about 70K, it is not as widely known as I am sure it will be in the coming years. We found several homes for under 600K with acres, views and access to all the amenities we could have ever asked for. I may sound a bit exuberant, but let me tell you, we have lived in Sonoma to SF, Golden Springs to Sante Fe-- from NY to CA in and around 12 cities, and this is head and shoulders above any of the others. Between the weather, with 70 degree year round average with cool nights for sleeping and beautiful sunny days over 320 days a year and the second best air quality in the US, and 4 very mild seasons, low cost of living, almost no taxes and diversity in both housing and people, my wife and I who are Jewish have found none of the racial intolerance too prevalent in the South from AK to CA. Great local fishing and hiking and almost 100 miles of waterways within about 1 hour with even more boating and fishing opportunities. Also, we like to travel, and this is probably the most centrally located place in the southwest with several states, national treasures and top destinations within 3-4 hours. Like most places, the housing prices were a bit higher last year in 2007-2008, but even at double the current price we are getting more here in terms of home and lifestyle than any place we have lived at from CA to NY. We feel so fortunate that we found Prescott, and the fact that we got what would have been a multimillion dollar home of over 5000 Sq feet on 3 acres for 595K, just 10 minutes from down town in one of the finest cities in the nation makes us feel truly blessed.

Would you move to Prescott if you've lived in Phx/ - 10/26/2009

We're considering this. Guy from NY scared me though. Water - how bad is it? Intelligence - how bad is it? In Scottsdale we own a small business, we have children, we love Prescott. Visiting for events, going fishing or just a day trip & having lunch. Prescott is my favorite place to be. But WOULD it if I lived there?? Scottsdale has great dining - it seems Prescott does too. Beautiful homes too. We eat & live naturally and organically - it seems Prescott could support this. I'm still researching schools & I'm not sure I've found the gym of my dreams but so far...everything is comparable. And the temps?? Ahhhhh....you got me. If I could leave 110 degree summers behind I'd be in heaven!! This site doesn't seem like it's too busy lately but I'm truly hoping someone has some answers.
