I spent the first 35 years of my life in the Illinois Quad Cities. Most of the time was spent in Moline.
If you enjoy watersports, there are two rivers, and many lakes in the area to enjoy, along with plenty of fishing. There is plenty of hunting, deer season is popular.
If you like drinking, there are a ton of bars to visit, along with live music. There's casinos, if you want to gamble.
There are a lot of outdoor festivals in summer to enjoy.

Accessible, Fun, Outdoorsy, Great Place to Live! - 1/6/2015
I felt like I had to give a review after seeing some of the other posts about Moline. I moved here (from Chicago) a year ago, and I absolutely love it. I'll tell you why.
Moline Downtown: It's revitalized with a hopping brewery, cool bars, good restaurants, unique shopping, the iWireless Center which gets some pretty damn good concerts and entertainment, and bike trails along the Mississippi River.
Uptown Moline: You have a mall which is being expanded and more shopping centers for all of the shopping needs that you would get in any bigger city.
Education: They just built a brand new Western Illinois Campus along the Mississippi River which will house 5000 full time college students and give a huge boost to the local economy. The city has closed some elementary schools down, but they are adjusting to the economic changes of the city just like every other town in America. The crime rate is low and the schools are good.

Don't Move to Moline Illinois - 7/23/2013
I have live in Moline since 2006. Since 2006 my property taxes have doubled I now pay for garbage pickup, water run off fee, recycling fee, you have to pay if you call the police or fire department. This city now looks at our homes as their private piggy banks. The tax man keeps raising the values of homes to get more tax money but when the owner sells their home it is no where close to what the tax man claimed. Over taxing is one big reason we have so many forclosures. The street now are full of pot holes. Our Mall is becoming so vacant with Sears now leaving. Moline city food tax is 10% so many just go to East Moline (7% tax) or Iowa (7%). Food is taxed in this city. I only wish Moline leaders would use tax money to provide services to it's citizens instead of railroad museums or the new police station that looks like it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Moline beats many of the alternatives - 6/27/2010
I've lived lots of places around the country. Started out in Moline, and return every few months. For those who complain about lack of arts and culture, you're 3 hours from Chicago if you drive the speed limit - 2 hours if you push it. There you can find your museums and much more - a lot of it undesirable. Go to St Louis for more culture (and the highest crime rate in the country). Both of the above have pro sports of every category.
If Moline is too liberal, so is the East Coast and the West Coast. The Liberals are working on changing that - just as the Conservatives drove the country to liberalism, the Liberals are driving it to ???.
The Quad Cities has much to offer. Scenic country, friendly businesses, county fairs, antiques, flea markets, nice people, smiles, and more. And short drives to things which only big cities have.

I love people whose only positive statement about a city like Moline is that it's a "great place to raise kids in." Wow, that's a reason to move your family here! There are lots of places in the country that are great places to raise kids. What else does Moline have to offer? These reviews are supposed to give others an overview of cities. Obviously Tory didn't have anything positive to say (i.e. Moline is lacking in art, culture, shopping, etc.) Anony had a lot of specifics to share, so for Tory to comment that it's all a rant of unadultered bull**** is a little short-sighted seeing you've lived in the city for half as long. Interesting to read the comments I have seen. My wife and I both grew up in the Q.C's and left after we were married. We now live in suburban Portland, Oregon and we are starting a business together. I agree that the opportunity for young people seems challenging, but if you choose to live here you owe it to your city to make a differance. I will say leaving this place changed my life for better and living in Oregon is awsome, but the Q.C's will always be home. If you do live in Moline make the best of and a differance.
The last thing I will write is dont be like a lot of people I have known in the past that do not enjoy Chicago. Visit it often, and experiance as much as you can. By the way, if you do not want to stay in the Q.C. area Chicago is not your only opportunity. We have lived many places before settling in Portland and let me tell you Chicago is not all that,

Poverty Warning List - 6/26/2006
I felt a little guilty about my earlier posting, bashing my hometown like that. But I have to say I do agree with what has been said here. The past twenty years have not been kind to this area. I grew up in Rock Island and love the city it used to be. I actually worked for the city for a couple of years and worked with some of the greatest people I've ever worked with, ever known, for that matter...
I have lived in southern California and in eastern Texas. I used to have family here, that's what brought be back. But I can't wait to get back to California, anywhere... where there are jobs and where having intellectiual or artistic interests is not frowned upon. I don't think I'll get very homesick again since the area hardly resembles the place where I grew up.
I don't know what can be done to help the area, but I don't think that a new hog plant is the answer. It will only drive out other industry.
