Virtually no violent crime - 8/10/2011
Have you ever been in a place where you don't need to worry about who is walking behind you, where you may leave your house and car unlocked without worrying about them, where everyone says hello and means it? That's Juneau. Certainly we have crime including, for the most part, drug abuse and domestic violence but it's pretty difficult to get away with most criminal behavior because, for example, a stolen car can only get out of Juneau via ferry! This is the most peaceful and stress-free place I've ever lived.[read more...] |

High cost of Living - 5/12/2011
Have lived in Juneau since 1985. Unless you have a college degree and like rain for get it. The cost of living, food, utilities very high. On a sunny day the place is heaven. Great tourist trap. I live a one from the Mendenhall Glacier. Low paying jobs are plenty, but the cost of housing makes in impossible to enjoy the outdoor. In other words. you got to work longer hours to live. Selling a house is plus. [read more...] |

Climate - 9/7/2009

So much to do - 4/24/2008
To live in Juneau, it is important to disregard the weather much of the time. With good gear, the outdoors is usually available and magnificent. People are interested and interesting and there are many events to stay busy. We have recently even added so many big box stores that most things you need are available in town.[read more...] |

Juneau is friendly and not a dark place after all - 11/14/2007
Juneau Alaska is part of the National Tongas Forest...meaning rains a lot. The cost of living is very high, and groceries no doubt 30% more than the national average (lower 48). It is always good to weigh your options before moving to S.E. Alaska and Juneau Alaska. Otherwise you wasted your time, money to find out this is not what you wanted. Juneau does have friendly people. People have expectations about places they want to go visit and ideals before getting to their destinations...sorry we don't live in ice igloos all year round![read more...] |

So much to do - 10/13/2007
Believe it or not, for a town of 30,000 Juneau has cultural and recreational events to rival cities of 100,000 or more. Theatre, symphony, opera, jazz & classics and folk music festivals. There's often more to do than time to do it, especially when trying to work in fishing for salmon and pulling crab pots full of dungeness crab![read more...] |

Dark and unfriendly - 8/8/2006
I was offered a job in juneau, so I decided to fly up and check it out. Within two days I decided that juneau was not for me. There is a decent bit to do, though the only way I could handle it is if I already had friends here. It is just grey grey grey all year long. Find me a city in the US that has fewer sunny days a year than juneau(maybe sitka). It is very lush and green, and there is some old growth forests around. The fishing is some of the best in the world. Lots of water.... waterfalls, creeks, rivers and their frozen cousins, glaciers. The icefields are amazing. It's also very expensive. Property values are kind of on the high side, and fresh fruits and veggies are alot more than I was used to paying. There are no roads in and out of juneau, therefore everything is shipped in, hence the pricetag. In the summer their are tons of cruise ships, with tons of tourists flooding the streets of downtown. The people don't seem too friendly at all, and there isn't much culture to be had(music etc...). I thought I could handle it before I came up here, but after staying a few days, I have a very depressing image of the whole area. There is money here, but all the buildings seem run down, there is trash laying around everywhere, and it just seems like an economically depressed area(closed up old shopping malls, etc..). It would be fun to visit for maybe a few months max, but I just don't see how I could possibly live here.[read more...] |

Juneau - 6/21/2006
Juneau is a great place to live.First the bad part-lots of rain (we are in the Tongas National Forest, which is a temperate rainforest). The good part--lots of quiet, if you want it, and a safe place to live. The forest and water are breathtaking.Wildlife and adventures are all around. It's a hassle to get to and from--only by boat or plane, but worth it to many folks who live here.[read more...] |
