Not a Small Town - 1/26/2013
I don't know how anyone could classify this as a small town. This is bordering on urban. It used to be a suburb, but because of the economy, impoverished groups have moved in bringing with them problems such as gang violence, drugs and unemployment. Don't look at this place as a healthy place to raise your children, unless you want them exposed to gang warfare, street drugs and a multitude of diseases that the large immigrant population brings because they are not innoculated against such things. Yes, they are hard working people. Are they hear legally? Most likely not. Do we owe them healthcare and an education? Its up to you. Your child's education may suffer because programs that normally receive funding like music and sports are left begging because children of immigrants come to school hungry. You will not be able to relax here. I felt constantly on edge wondering if my car would be there in the morning to take me to work. Other, more dangerous groups are moving into this city, and it grows more and more seamy. Please exercise caution in deciding to move here. You'll be glad you read this. [read more...] |

Lots of great stuff to do in Concord - 11/4/2011
Small-city life is good in Concord. A great downtown park-Todos Santos Plaza-is home to weekly evening concerts in the summer, regular farmers' markets, and other fun events. Public parks, with 24/7 baseball fields, soccer, tennis, swimming and bocce (!) are strategically scattered throughout the city. Water world for the summer and Lime Ridge open space for the fall make the whole year great.
The Concord Pavilion (Sleep Train Pavilion? SF Chronicle Pavilion?) has a regular lineup of jazz, classical, country, blues and rock.
Cal State East Bay and Diablo Valley College (really in Pleasant Hill) provide higher education, as well as speakers, live theater and educational events. There’s shopping from the groovy to the grand, and, did I mention lotsa dining, from dives to the divine?
I raised three sons there, and only left, after 35 years because of a change of careers, with reluctance.
Did I mention perfect weather?

The outer San Francisco Bay Area - 4/4/2010
I moved to Concord because it was affordable. It is on the outer edge of an expensive and very attractive city, San Francisco, California. For a person with a relatively low income, Concord is too expensive for me.
Most of the cultural advantages of the Bay Area--beautiful parks, urban areas, museums--are some distance away. As in many parts of the United States, in Contra Costa County where Concord is located, there is a lot of tension when you walk through a neighborhood. We are an older couple and are afraid to walk through our neighborhood at night. We double bolt the locks when we come in the door. Many of the services, good police protection, mass transit and good schools are faltering. So what's new? I wouldn't stay here if I had a few good choices.[read more...] |

Just far enough away from the city - 10/5/2006
Concord is 30 miles east of San Francisco. It's much warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. I tell people the max difference is about 1 degree per mile summer and winter. Lots to do: golf, parks, water sports, skiing (2.5hours away). You can do all in the same day too! Great shopping in neighboring Walnut Creek too.[read more...] |

A Great Place To Live - Londonderry, NH - 4/18/2006
I've lived in NH all my life. It's a great place to live, work and raise a family. The cost of living in comparison to some places is considered high but there are great jobs here and the access to quality work, culture, education is all accessible. You can reach the mountains, lakes, oceans, cities (like Boston, NYC) within a days drive! One thing I love about NH is the 4 seasons. You get a taste of it all. In the fall the air changes to a crisp, cool, fresh smell and the leaves are so many colors that everywhere you look it's a rainbow. The winter is cold, but it offers much to do if you bundle up and enjoy the time in the snow; whether it be skiing, skating, sledding, cross country skiing, or sitting inside beside a warm fire watching others make a snowman. I prefer the warmth myself! Then the spring when everthing is new again, the leaves are budding, the grass is turning green, the birds are singing. The summer - a long awaited season for me is great. I can't say enough about this place. The people are also friendly. I've heard that New Englanders can be cold. I've not encountered that. We're hard working, serious at times, but honest, sincere and willing to help others. I've always seen a warmth spirit even in new relationships so have no fear! The schools, are by far, some of the best. In my community, many of the parents are very involved in the schools and go above and beyond to help the teachers and work with their kids during those important years.[read more...] |
