cost of living - 9/29/2009
Agreed, cost of living is too high, too many wall streeters (which have a bad rep nowadays), and diversity is almost non-existant, public schools are average/good but don't expect much if your kid is special ed or gifted, but on the plus, proximity to NYC, nice walkable town streets, low crime, great parks, great private schools nearby and Waveny is great. I usually stay in the city for entertainment/the arts/social, and New Canaan is a great location for commuting.[read more...] |

Very Conservative Wall Street to a T - 9/13/2009
If you are a "Stepford Wife" or believe in that way of life, you will LOVE New Canaan.
Very white and very rich, very Wall Street Gordon Gecko.
IF you aren't like this, you may have a tough time here if you are not part of the Club. Unfortunately, it wasn't like this in the last generation, but now it has changed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are like these folks.

Cost of Living Weighs Heavy - 9/6/2007
Outside of the other categories, which run very well here; schools are good and competitive, climate is relatively mild, crime is very low, diversity is strong, culture is readily available with the proximity to NYC, health is excellent, economy is insulated, the cost of living drives the competitive culture to pay for life style. i.e. You need a high paying job to enter this community to afford to do all the activities available if you can get in, to do the recreation etc.
Then this cost of living weighs on your children as they compete in the classroom, field, social setting etc..
So you have a lot of people career driven making excellent money always looking to improve the schools, the real estate, the town etc puts a lot of pressure on everyone to constantly improve. What happens is there are not entry-level affordable homes, mom and pop merchants cannot afford the rent in town, large retail moves in. The town loses its character, which attracted everyone in the first place.
I do not begrudge anyone to improve, but the life style has become unbalanced.
This is Hollywood of the east cost. It is not real world.
