paradise doesn't come cheap - 2/9/2022
I find it amazing the place is rated one star - Yes the cost of housing is high especially as covid pushed more people to Florida. But living here is easy - three airports within one hour drive, the best seafood restaurants in the country, no ice, no snow, but a reasonable change of seasons. The fall is perfect beach weather (yes, a tropical storm may come in), The spring is warm with a lot of sunshine. Tourists are heavy in the summer and locals do not like the traffic (hence one star taken off) and it is very warm and humid (like an August Iowa day for two months). The winters? Like I say no ice, no snow, crisp and mostly sunny with highs most often around 60. And I haven't even talked about the beach - the beach is the best in the country (I've been to them all) and that's why it gets so busy here in the summer. Read More

UNLESS YOU’RE A MILLIONAIRE IT SUCKS - 12/3/2021
This tiny town is SO expensive. Unless you want a roach and mold infested place you will have to pay around $1800 or more and the “nice” places have reviews that scare me. I have been Living with a friend trying to find somewhere to move for months. None of the apartment complexes get back to me or simply say they have no availability. There are also no waitlists! If you have pets you will have even more trouble. Every time I see a place it says NO PETS. They even do fish fees in most places ?!?! This town just has no space. There’s the military that live in a lot of the housing and people buying places to rent for vacationers. The rest of the people get nothing.. the food is not great. They don’t have much culture here. There has been lots of violence and it’s getting worse each summer. The only amazing thing is the beaches but that gets boring after the 10th swim in the ocean. Jobs are everywhere expect they pay terribly to the point where you’re scrounging to get by. Im a single Read More

Still a great place to live - 7/24/2019
I moved to Destin in 1987 when there was no development in the eastern part of town, only trees, beaches and a two lane road. I worked as a Sheriff's Deputy for over 30 years and have lived in the same house in Destin for as long. This place was a dream to live in 30 years ago and it's still a great place to be. Low crime rate with only minor property crimes and one homicide every two or three years (very rare) and usually domestic related. Prices here are reasonable for essentials but housing has gone through the roof. I bought my house for $65,000 30 years ago and they just built three down the street that have just sold for half a million now. If you love the beach, golfing, fishing and boating then this is your place to be. There are bike paths along the beach roads and nice jogging paths. The main road going east (Hwy 98) is being developed into six lanes and traffic is miserable. I mean bumper to bumper in the summer. The winter and fall not so much. Remember this is a tourist Read More

Crime on the Rise in Destin/New Sheriff takes away - 2/9/2013
Having owned a home for many years, it has become increasingly known that crime is on the rise here. Due to it being a tourist area, the local media, sheriff dpt. has suppressed & tried to keep the knowledge from the citizens (unconstitutional) Our former sheriff is in prison along with tax collector employees and was a criminal himself! There have been automobiles broken into on home premises, rapes, murders, be-headed bodies found behind the Destin commons, bomb threats at the Destin commons, suicides, drugs are all over & it's getting more transient here. Many pedophiles are registered and non-registered in the area, ice-cream man is even strange & been accused of hanging out in Target & going up & talking to little girls in which mother's are made uncomforablte, volunteers in schools have been caught with porn on computers, teachers have been caught doing inappropriate things with young ladies, etc. list goes on and Read More

Development has been mixed - 4/25/2011
When I moved back to this area in Jr. High, Destin was still a sleepy little fishing village, catering to vacationers looking to fish in the Gulf of Mexico. It was still the 50s and 60s era place my folks remembered: small and southern, definitely not fancy or filled with 24-hour non-stop entertainment. Most people brought that with them when they came from cities around the southeast.

It was changing, though. Throughout the 70s and 80s more and more high-rise condos sprouted up, but shared the harbor and beach with small Florida cottages and empty lots with sand dunes and scrub trees. That sleepy pace ended in the boom of the 90s. It is almost like developers have something against nature and affordable housing.

Unfortunately, we locals caved in to the money and conveniences all the development brought. The beach is still beautiful, and we have great restaurants and exciting things to do for recreation, but we have lost our little village in the Read More

polluted beach water - 7/29/2008
The beaches are beautiful, the water looks great;don't be fooled, the water is pretty badly polluted. If you get any kind of cut or abrasion on the beach,in the water,or especially on the fishing docks wash & disinfect immediately.I didn't,& two months down the road I'm still trying to get the swollen ulcer to heal. The original wound was a negligible abrasion on the beach. The speculation is that irresponsible boaters are dumping their toilets into the bay & gulf. The medical community in the Destin area is aware of the problem, and mentioned to me a drug resistent staph normally found in hospital settings thats turning up on the various fishing docks. I expect the local biz.people are keeping a pretty tight lid on this story for obvious Read More
