Great potential; when it leaves the dark ages. - 10/1/2010
Lived in the area for 4 years.
I still believe the area itself is high in its potential to be a wonderful place to live, but the people have got to be willing to change. Abundant nature & wildlife. Good fishing & boating are all close by. Not a bad 25 minute drive to Gainesville (Home of UF "Gators").
That being said, the town population is a very high religious, republican, welfare town.... That's right, conventional wisdom is defied here.. The God and Guns vote trumps the political Republican agenda against so-called "socialism" here.. Yet, everyone has their food stamps. Which leads into my next statement; POOR education! Not totally the teachers fault, however, when you begin a science lesson to students (such as the process of evolution) with a disclaimer of, "this is not what 'I' believe", the system has issues. Nice town - 6/29/2010
Interlachen is a historical town with a small population. Great place to retire or enjoy a slower pace of life. There has not been growth in sometime, however, the state is in the process of having a 4 lane highway on State Road 20. It is an Indian name that means between the lakes. The many lakes have made it a very popular getaway for water sports and fishing. Many of the old historical homes were hotels back in the day before the big freeze that killed the citrus. Many politicians often stayed in this quaint town. The railroad played an important role at one time in Interlachen.
