My wife and I lived in Gainesville for a year in 2005 we found a small but growing city with a great industrial and manufacturing bace.We liked the collection of older homes and getting around was easy with thier bus service. The city was compacted compared to our home now in leesburg fla so you could walk to most places. The climate was good but air quality in summer was really poor.Gainesville has a good varity of parks you could spend a day just visiting them.[read more...]

Fast growing but low profile - 8/9/2007

Gainesville (and more accurately Hall County) is the 7th fastest growing county (2000-2003)in the country but nobody knows about it outside Georgia. http://www.census.gov/prod/2005pubs/p25-1134.pdf. I've only been here 2 months but since no one cares to write about the place except for one other poster, I will. Ok, it's not a big city but the other faster growing smaller towns had more posts, Bend, OR (21 posts) or St. George, UT (14). People are generally friendly and there's a lot of diversity especially with the influx of Mexicans who work for the poultry plants- it's the Poultry Capital of the World! Be prepared for UGA football fans, guys talking about fishing on Lake Lenoir and tackling noontime traffic congestion. Downsides- U-turns seem to be legal nearly everywhere which still freaks me out. They do U-turns on the interstate as well. Neighbors feel safe talking about you within earshot but won't approach you. Upsides- Locals happy with development and increasing property values and more stores. Big hospital complex. Also, if you're the typical screaming liberal snob you may want to head to Atlanta instead and spare the townsfolk the "Mayberry" jokes. They don't deserve it.[read more...]
