Small Town thinking in a growing town - 1/11/2010
Ever hear the phrase "that's the way we've always done it?" Get ready to hear it A LOT in this town. The same people have been running this town for a long time and they take advantage of you if you are not "well connected." They will try to run you out.[read more...] |

Nice, but boring. - 2/10/2009
Valdosta is an OK city. Just moved here, and the first thing I noticed was that there was a church or bank on almost every corner. Not much of a night-life here. Expect to pay expensive rates for apts. There are a lot of fast food joints, and dollar stores. It's a good place if you love football. It's close to FL. Most of the people I've encountered were nice. The local university is really popular here. Valdosta has some really beautiful homes out 'in the country' area. Overall, a nice city.[read more...] |

Schools - 10/22/2008
Valdosta has two very distinct school systems, the city schools and the county schools. The have different school year calendars and because the county system is highly sought after they have very strict residency rules. You must provide proof of residecy every year. The county school system is one of the finest in the state. There has been talk of combining the systems but it was met with much opposition. The best thing about having two systems is the high school football team rivalry[read more...] |

Valdosta can't wait to leave. - 8/14/2008
Valdosta is a step back in history. Not in a good way mind you. There is a church on every corner of the city just about. Which pretty much explains the total void of any night life. There is very little to do here. Fast food abounds and we pretty much deep fry EVERYTHING. The job market is crap. Unless you enjoy working for 10 bucks an hour or less. With a degree and experience. Some fishing and hunting spots here and there. The only problem is if you are not a local you will be greeted with "this has been my spot since.....". At which point you should just move on. The grade schools here suck. Very limited budget and not much put into education other than the local football stadium which is amazing. If you are in to that sort of thing. There is an amusement park down the road. It's not bad. They have a few concerts (country mostly). The people are very friendly and helpfull. Summers range from hot to insanely hot and humid. The winters do get chilly (freezing and below). Not terrible and not very long lived though. The cost of living is high like everywhere else now. You just make less money. Over all I'd have to say I can't wait to leave and I hope it's soon.[read more...] |

Small town but within a few hours drive of most wanted cultural and recreational events. Limited air transport-only to Atlanta to connect but 2 hour drive to Jacksonville Fl or Tallahassee Fl airports. Low housing cost, low property tax. Reasonable health care availability but cost a little high. Overall, if want smaller town traffic, culture, and cost but want reasonable access to larger city resources then Valdosta is an excellent place to live.[read more...] |
