Taxes high - 7/16/2006
For a town with and income less than 75% of the national income, property taxes, income taxes and sales taxes are quite high. In addition, water rates are some of the highest in the country. Not a pretty economic picture.[read more...] |

Incorporated in the late 1870's Arkansas City (AC)is the largest town in Cowley County, although Winfield is the county seat. AC is a nice rural city on the western edge of the El Dorado (Flint) Hills of Eastern Kansas.
Mainly a farming and ranching community, it has several industrial facilities: Creekstone Meat Processing (cattle and hogs), 2 flour mills, a Mobile home manufacturer (Skyline), among others.
By Indian legend, there has never been a tornado in AC because it lies between two rivers, the Arkansas and the Walnut, which converge ESE of AC.
