What happened to Chanute? - 4/11/2011

Ohhhhh, I have to comment on this post. I was born and raised in Chanute. MY entire family still lives there, along with many other relatives. I left many years ago, and have visited over the years. Chanute seems like it is in a cocoon. Protected from the harsh realities of the outside WORLD. I noticed that Main Street was like a ghost town, and many businesses were long gone. It seems the only job in town is taking care of the disabled. Everyone works for SKILL, and it seems that EVERYONE is disabled, either drunks, drug addicts or sells drugs. I dont know how the town supports itself, unless the government is helping, because there are hardly any businesses left. Walmart and McDonald's seem to thrive. The streets roll up about 9pm. Im sure the cost of living is low, because there is no money being distributed. I'm surprised that the taxpayers came up with enough money to built a new pool, but Im sure the government helped with that too. Back when I lived in Chanute the population was over 10,000. Many people have left, and what remains is something like 7000. I feel so lucky I made my escape many many years ago. [read more...]

Dont move there! - 1/19/2011

I grew up in Chanute and found it has some of the most judgemental, self righteous people I have ever know. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of wonderful people who live there, however the town is very small and those who have attitudes have a very large attitudes and are not afraid to show it. If someone offered me a million dollars to move to Chanute for a year I couldn't accept it. I will never go back and hope no one else ever has the misfortune of having to move there. The real estate market has collasped, jobs have gone over seas (there used to be 15 plus factories, now there are maybe a handful if any left), the economy is dead. Being the reason the cost of living is so low, there is no money. Many of my class mates that stayed there have died in car/motorcycle wrecks (drinking and driving), in jail for selling drugs, in jail for using drugs or committed suicide. Just dont go!!!!!!![read more...]
