Good Community to raise kids in - 7/12/2010

I hated Emporia when we first moved here 7 years ago, but have since grown to love it. At first I thought there was nothing to do, but the community has a lot to offer if you bother to take time to look. The University has a lot to offer in the way of concerts/plays. They have a young thespian theater for youth who put on plays for kids that are actually pretty good. They have a small but beautiful zoo, and various events at a historic and recently remodled Granada theater. In the summer there is more to offer. They library has free concerts for kids(puppets/magicians/musicians/etc)every wednesday at noon, and Wednesday evenings there is Live in the Lot free concerts in Farmers parking lot. It has been a great community to raise kids in. Enough of a small town I feel safe and we can ride bikes nearly anywhere in town, but enough going on that we don't get bored. I find the education system to be excellent, my son only has 16 kids in his class and a techer plus a student teacher from the university, thats a ratio of 8 to 1 students to teachers. Not many communities where you will find that. If you are looking for a large city, Emporia is not the place for you. But it is a great community only 1 hr. away from topeka, and 1.5 hours from Wichita or KC, so you are centrally located from large communities that are not too far away to drive to for the the weekend if you want to get away.[read more...]
