I read teh assessment of Raceland regarding housing and cost of living. Both are misleading. I am sure the median price of house is as you stated but many of the houses here included single wide very old trailers on a small piece of land. In addition the cost of homeowners insurance is exceedingly high as we are redlined by the insurance industry and have to buy from only one company "Citizens", I pay four time more for homeowners in Raceland than I did for a home worth more in Baton Rouge. Food cost are also high, my wife and I drive 75 miles at least monthly to stock up on groceries. However a decent home on the Bayou where you can fish from your backyard is still under $200,000. The police are responsive, and the neighbors leave you alone. Not too bad, a retired couple making 36,000 per year can live satisfactorily here. The cost of Living is reasonable, but not as cheap as the article protrayed it to be.[read more...]
