Basic cost of living in northern New Jersey is very high for those on a moderate and/or fixed income. Property taxes seem to run from $12000 a year to (as much as) $80000 a year. Rent for a one bedroom apartment is over $1500.00 and for someone moving toward retirement, these factors cause one to look elsewhere for a place to live in the future. On the flip side, Manhattan and all its excitement, art and educational opportunities is a short (distance wise) commute; gas is less costly than any where else in the US, and there are GREAT ethnic restaurants all around.
