Yup, that is the size of the borough. As someone who had grown up in this small community and who still has family that resides here I feel I can offer an honest and informed view of the town. It is not uncommon for people who grew up in Neptune City to reside here in their adult lives. Many residents take pride in the town and become involved in community and it's institutions. There is also a heavy rental presence. The elementary school is a solid, the police involved, and the taxes are reasonable by New Jersey standards, and the town's governing body has done a wonderful job of trying to improve the towns image and appearance. The two major shopping centers have undergone dramatic upgrades and the town has a community center that caters to the needs of the citizens. Anyone thinking of residing in town should look to the southern part by the river or to the western part of town. These areas are by far the more attractive parts. However with the good comes the bad, the eastern part of town is where the old commercial business center lies and the area for the most part is a dump. Although the borough has redevelopment plans in place for this area, the present economy will put that on hold for a few years. Within the last two years the old hotel in this blighted area was demolished to the relief of many sorrounding residents. It served to house drug users, positution, illegals, and crime. Police were always responding to calls at this location and robberies of nearby homes were not uncommon. I still remember being about 13 and having some stranger approach a friend and I as to where he could buy drugs, or my neighbor having her purse snatched as she tried to enter her home...eh! Bad area the eastern part is! Another concern is that you have to send your kids to an 'Abbott District" high school in Neptune. These are school districts designated by the state as poor districts where student spending is 3 times the state average per pupil to correct any discrepencies in learning and the end results are that it yields no results. You'd be better off considering other educational alternatives. [read more...]

Neptune City is Monmouth County's best kept secret - 3/24/2008

A little town often confused with Neptune Township, but very much it's own borough. Very few people know that our town is on the Shark River with a mahnificent park that allows river access. Very close to the beach without the crowds and congestion. Definelty a town for those who like peace and quiet at home, but want to be a bike's ride to the beach activities and the restaurants of the Shore.[read more...]
