It is what you make of it... - 11/23/2010
Corning NY is a scenic town and one that I enjoy living in. I graduated from college an hour west of Corning so friends and I frequented Corning often. It is a nice place to go out on Market Street and there is a multitude of events going on in the Elmira / Corning area if one keeps an ear out for them.
The entire area is limited in major economic opportunities; Corning Inc., Dresser-Rand, Corning Museum of Glass plus the standard stores, malls, big-box stores are here. Corning is located at the base of the Finger Lakes Wine Trail which serves as a good starting point for the tourists who flock there for wine tastings at the various family-owned or incorporated wineries.
Any town will yield something depending on what you put into it; Corning is the same. If you look for opportunities, events and other things to do, you will have too much to do. If you expect those events to just show up on your doorstep, you will find yourself sitting at home with the TV looking at an empty doorstep.
The COL is very low; any decent paying job will yield disposable income which funds your activities. One must be not be dumb with their money, but one can easily save and get ahead while living here.
Corning is worth it; it is a good place to live. [read more...] |

why I'm looking to move - 5/10/2010
Corning is a nice area in which to live. Unfortunately for me, I am single and the taxes are too high. I am sick of all the salt they put on the roads in winter. For now, I will locate to Pa...more rail-trail biking and somewhat cheaper living. [read more...] |

Not good at all - 5/19/2009
I have been in Corning for almost a year and I am counting the days until I can go home to Georgia! The people are rude and arrogant. The schools are way over protective. The price of food and gas are outrageous! Businesses are going under and instead of getting new businesses to come in they turn them into parking lots for Corning Incorporated engineers. Utilities are mind blowing! My natural gas bill every month this winter was no less than $300.00! For one month and my thermostat was no higher than 64 degrees! And on top of all this the area is doing away with attractions that bring tourists and revenue! eg: Corning Classic LPGA, etc... Cant afford it here, nothing to do here at any age, no wonder the governor is begging people to stay and not move out of state![read more...] |

Wonderful town for families, not so for singles - 7/22/2007
Relocating families will have little trouble adjusting to Corning - the Glass Museum, numerous local and state parks, and the finger lakes are wonderful. However, after two years in town, I find the singles crowd limited to townie unprofessionals. If you're single and relocating to the area for work, consider Ithaca 45 miles away.[read more...] |
