Great small town but very expensive housing - 5/5/2011
We moved here 3 years ago due to my husband's job. We have been renting during the time we have lived here. Affordable housing is very hard to find here for us and the property taxes are extremely high. Minimum taxes are around $6000 for a very small 3 bedroom home, but more than not, $9000 & up. Because Long Island is so crowded, there are very few new developments here. We rented a townhome the first year and paid $2600/month. We now are paying $2400/mo for a very small (1100 sq ft) 3 br home. Thankfully we have a basement & very small single garage for storage. There are some very beautiful homes in Kings Park and we like the town. It is very small and there are no chain restaurants here, only locally owned i.e. Italian restaurants, pubs and delis. The schools are very good and our son has received a very good education (Thus the high taxes). The recreation department is also very good and have good programs for children. If we made more money we would love to stay here, but with a combined gross salary of $150,000 our budget is very tight. [read more...] |
