Been here 1 year, many many poor people in the area, many people with tattoos, piercings, many smoke cigarettes, and not to clean, restauraunts mediocre at best but a couple of good ones, seems in many segments of the population people are lazy here, weather is cold here. There is anew airport here but limited airlines. Spirit Air and Allegiant. Store Product selection less than other areas of the state. Main Department stores in Areaare Walmart & Target, although there is a small mall which isn't too bad, but don't expect to find a Macy's. Coupons for shopping are limited in the local newspaper, you have to purchase the Troy Record Newspaper by 8 Am at local Stewarts Convenience stores, gasolineis expensive[read more...]

Plattsburgh, NY
Everything - 5/6/2009

The city has the North Country Center for Cultural Arts, the being-renovated 1924 Strand Theater, numerous museums including the Museum Campus of the former Plattsburgh AFB, a beautiful biking trail along the waterfront and a new waterfront park is under construction. Plattsburgh SUNY is located in the City and Clinton Community College is down the road. The summers here are comfortable and the winters are long. However, with global warming the seasons are becoming warmer. Even the City Municipal Lighting complains that residents are not using enough electricity to keep warm or cool. Taxes are considered high by some, but the area has little crime, is clean, and has great schools. Burlington Vermont is a ferry ride away; Lake Placid is one hour away with Olympic type winter activities; and Montreal is a little over an hour for a totally unique experience. There is a quality of life here and people take pride in their work and the people are extremely giving and friendly, even to outsiders. The area is growing - Seems to be an influx of second/vacation homes owned by downstaters from NY and NJ especially since 9/11. There are no hurricanes, tornados, or major earthquakes, just predictable snowstorms. If and when the ocean waters rise, Manhattan may go under, Plattsburgh will still be here. [read more...]

Okay place for certain people - 2/20/2009

Plattsburgh is an okay city. On the positive side is the beautiful countryside outside the city. Plattsburgh is right next to the Adirondack National Park. Also, the crime rate is very low. On the negative side, the city itself is very unattractive. Also, unless you like snowskiing or similar snow-based sports, there is absolutely nothing to do for six months out of the year. The town did just get a second movie theatre and this one has stadium seating. Also there's a little mall, a couple of shopping centers, a bowling alley, and a skating rink. Not much in the way of cultural activities but there are some great funky festivals in the surrounding towns. Summers here are the bomb and in the fall the leaves are beautiful.[read more...]
