It's O.K. - 6/9/2008
I live about 15 minutes from the actual city of Goldsboro in a rural community. I'm a 'transplant' and moved here because my spouse's family is from here. Like any place, there are pros and cons. They do have a mall, but it's a fraction of the mall, say in Raleigh. I would much rather travel an extra 30 minutes to go to a real one. But it's neat for a last minute trip. There's a lot to choose from as far as eating goes. Ruby Tuesday, Outback, Chili's, Applebee's, Logan's are the main chain restaurants and as far as the fast food, there's everything under the sun, from Wendy's (there are 2) to Taco Bell (2 as well). There is a Krispy Kreme which is a treat, b/c they aren't everywhere. Pizza Inn on Ash Street is my favorite place to get pizza. My favorite thing about the city of Goldsboro is how everything is located right there together, not in several different sections of this big town like you'd find in Raleigh. You have the 'mall', Wal-Mart & it's strip mall usuals, Target, Sam's Club, Michael's, all the restaurants named above, plus more and downtown w/ it's 2 theatre groups and 1 children's theatre group, all within a 3 or 4 mile radius of each other. I love that. Now, to the cons. In order to really have some 'fun', you have to travel out of town for that. The culture is average, but the only people who seem to be really open-minded are the military (this is a military town w/ Seymore Johnson AFB) people unless they've lived here for a while. I have encounted many times people who think their you-know-what doesn't stink just because they're husband owns "this" or their parent's own "that." And it's hard to find a 'clique' to fit in around here b/c of that attitude, and I'm an outgoing person. Like I said before I live in a rural part of Wayne County, my zip is Goldsboro, though, so I'm sure if I lived in the city, it MAY be a little different, can't say for sure. All in all, it's not that bad of a place to live. They have a public transportation system. I don't use it, but from what I've seen in the paper, I could see where it seems to be descent. I know if you are a young person, (teenage-ish to young adult) it can be pretty boring. Some young people tried to open a place downtown for that very same reason and it wasn't approved. There's one movie theatre, the 'mall', Starbuck's, a skating rink and bowling alley. Oh and a Chuck-E-Cheese depending on if you've outgrown it or not. Be sure and check out the Arts Council of Wayne County if you like the arts. I am impressed with that. It's not like your metropolitan arts centers, but it's very interesting. http://www.artsinwayne.org/ Do your research on the inner-city schools. A lot of people send their children to private schools for several factors.
