Some good things - 4/1/2017
My husband and I are older, he is a disabled veteran and we are retired on moderate to low income. We have lived in different areas including SC. Some pros of living in NC are moderate weather, we lived in Arizona for some time so the humidity is a welcome change & doesn't bother us that much. The are has tons of greenery, and drought isn't a concern as it rains a good amount. In Arizona the amount of homeless, and drug addicts seen regularly was very big, you don't find very many of those people here, life is slower paced, relaxed, areas safer, cleaner, etc. We live in Richlands a city right next to Jacksonville that is pretty quiet. The area has a very high amount of military people both active and retired, so if this is not your cup of tea, you would not like it here. Housing is very affordable here, we live in a 3 bedroom 2 bath built in 2009 with a big fenced in backyard and only pay $780 a month, other affordable housing that is not run down is easy to find here. The area is a Read More

Military Community - 2/26/2016
Jacksonville North Carolina is a great area to live considering the proximity to the beach and the low cost of living. The area has experienced tremendous growth in the service industry since the early 1990's due to the military community based at Camp Lejeune, NC. There are two Wal Marts, a Wal Mart Neighborhood Markt, two Lowes, Home Depot and may other big box stores. There is not many opportunities outside of service employment jobs and the community could benefit from manufacturing or supply chain industry making a home in the Read More

Family Moving to area..need advice on the best sch - 9/21/2012
Hello, we will be moving to the Jacksonville area this fall and need some advice. We will be moving from TX, so we have never been to Jacksonville before and know nothing about the area. We have 3 elementary school aged children, 1 has Autism and another also receives services like speech and occupational. We love areas where we can bike or walk to stores/school/parks, etc. We have noticed that there are tons of rentals in this area and we know that will not be a problem to find a house to rent. We just want to make sure we are in a nice area with great schools. Any advice would be great!! Thank you! Read More

In Desperate Need of Advice! - 1/21/2012
Hi, Can anyone offer any advice on Jacksonville? I am a single Mom of a 16 year old boy and am considering taking a position in Jacksonville and relocating there. My two major concerns are 1) Will this be a good place for a 16 yr old boy, ie: lots of teens, safe, fun stuff, walkable, bike riders, etc and 2) With an income of barely 30k a year, will we be able to live a decent life? Any and all suggestions and opinions would be GREATLY appreciated.  Read More

Please give me the pros and cons, terrified of my - 1/21/2012
Was wondering if anyone could offer any advice. One poster said, if you are single and liberal, this is not the place for you. Well, I am definitely single (a single mom of a 16 yr old boy) and as for Liberal, well, I wouldn't go that far, but I'm certainly not ultra Conservative. Are there a lot of teens? My son would be miserable if there were no one around his age. We are currently way out here in a little town in CA where the streets are covered in kids. They all walk and bike to school since there are no busses and it's extremely safe. We are from NC, and I am considering taking a position in Jacksonville. Any advice? Pros, Cons... And why do you think the poster said it would NOT be a good place if you are single or Read More

Jacksonville, NC cost of living is good - 9/29/2010
I've lived in CT, Hawaii and this area of North Carolina has a low cost of living and the people are nice here. The crime rate is lower than a big city and this area is growing all the time. Many newly built homes & apartments and the shopping and dinning is Read More

Living in Jacksonville, NC - 6/6/2010
Jacksonville, NC is a military town. We've got Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River on either side. This is nice for military families, there are a lot of events & activities offered by the military to their service members and family. As for jobs there aren't enough to go around. The weather's good, not too hot and hardly ever any snow. City taxes keep going up but it's pretty safe. Not too much to do without driving at least 45mins to nearby Wilmington, even then not much to do once you've done it. Raleigh's about 2 hrs away and is the closest resonably priced Read More

Jacksonville Commons Middle School - 9/29/2008
As with the earlier review I agree this school has issues with Bullying. There are other schools in the area with much better programs geared at correcting these issues. The one Good program they do have is avid which is geared to help students prepare for high school and college, the program is good, but could be better with more educator influence. The Educator factor here is lacking to say the least, the school needs to improve in the areas of Science and Mathematics. The school is centrally located however, and is right next to Northside High School if you are looking for sporting events. All in all I would rate this school a 3 out of 10- 10 being the highest. There are much better schools in the area when considering a living location and school proximity. We were a Military family who decided to buy a home here, our biggest regret was leaving the base schools-much more organized and family Read More
