Actually, it's really not all that bad. - 4/26/2012

Moved here a year ago from Gahanna (outside of Columbus), where I spent two years. Dayton is a little limited. Retail shopping is relatively miniscule, and you may have to drive a distance for some chain restaurants because some of them only have one or two locations in the entire metro. However, two much larger cities, Cincinnati and Columbus, are fairly close by. I'm really surprised about the comment that people are unfriendly. I found Columbus to be really cliquish, but I haven't found that here at all. Most people I've coem across have been extraordinarily nice. No problems with crime either. You get more for your money here....my housing here is a step up from what it was in Columbus at the same price.[read more...]

Area Crime - 9/26/2011

Crime is always on the uprise once the college students return or enroll. Ohio does have one of the lowest employment ratings in the country; therefore, some people resort to crime to handle their needs. Crime seems to be more rampant in the adjoining and farther areas of the regional area, but is never the less apparent.[read more...]

Leave Beavercreek NOW, unless you work at the BASE - 6/23/2010

Just a horrible place, taxes are crazy high, crime is all over the place. The crime rate has jumped in the past few years. Why? Because the local Government okays any and all "new" apartments, renters pay NO taxes and their is no city income tax. So guess what ? Renters flock here to put their children in Beavercreek schools at a cost to the homeowners. Don't even get me started on the Keystone Cop force, they have NO idea the "new" type of crime they are up against. If you do not work at the BASE and I am criticizing the civilian workers there ( they are on a "superior UNION planet of their own") NOT the military . SELL, take a loss just get out now !![read more...]

Random - 11/27/2008

The weather here is very sporadic and unpredictable. One day it will be 60 degrees [Fahrenheit], then it will freeze at night, rain the next morning and by the following night it will be 20 degrees and snowing... in April! ... Very hard to adjust to! --- I've just started keeping my winter clothes out all year because it's hard to predict when fall ends and winter starts. Then it's often cold late into the spring months.[read more...]

Taxes, levies and bonds - 6/21/2008

Beavercreek may have a reputation as a decent city, but every time you turn around there's either a new levy or bond, renewal levy, emergency levy, or rumblings of instituting a city income tax. The city says they need the extra money because of expansion, which may be true since you always read of building projects being approved and never read of one being turned down. Except that more houses/businesses should increase city revenue through additional taxes, which the city doesn't acknowledge. So you'll pass a police, fire or roads levy to theoretically pay for service in a new neighborhood (though the new neighborhood is also bringing in additional taxes) and the next election cycle they ask for an increase (and get it). The schools already have at least one levy going and they're trying to push a 28-year bond issue (it failed twice but we'll see it again). The schools have also promised that, if/when the bond passes, there will be another levy on top of the bond and existing levy to pay for operating costs associated with the bond. This despite they already get 62% of our property taxes (which are some of the highest around here). One justification for the city income tax is that it would reduce our property taxes, but I can't see that happening since they keep trying to get more money, not less. And once you get an income tax, it never disappears but only goes up (nearby Kettering recently raised their city income tax). So, with all this, if you plan to move to Beavercreek just be prepared to say goodbye to your money.[read more...]

I Live in Beavercreek, Ohio - 11/11/2007

My Name is Kent Bierley and I live in Beavercreek, Ohio. My wife and I move here into a house back in 1992. Currently raising two kids. Climate is what you would expect (or not) in the Dayton/Miami Valley Ohio area. I have been working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for 20 years. Beavercreek in on the western edge of Greene County. It is largest "City" in Greene county in population, land area, and economics. You can learn more at the Beavercreek City Web Site (http://www.ci.beavercreek.oh.us/), Greene County Web Site (http://www.co.greene.oh.us/), or the Greene County Visitors Bureau (http://www.greenecountyohio.org/).[read more...]

Most unfriendly people - 4/14/2007

We've moved around the country as a result of position relocations for my husbands career. Beavercreek, Ohio is the worst! Try smiling at a stranger and see what you get- either a miserable frown or nothing at all. People are so self-absorbed in meaningless busy-ness, they have no time for strangers to become friends. The church is no better. Like automatrons, they say "Peace be with you", but the looks on their faces don't back up the sentiment and just forget anyone approaching you, doesn't happen. Can't wait for our next reassignment to get out of here.[read more...]

Nice place to live -- but very conservative! - 12/27/2006

I've lived in Beavercreek since 1970 and have found it a pleasant mix of country, suburb, business, and shopping. Property taxes are high, sales taxes are middling, and cost of living is fairly low compared to other parts of the country. We have no income tax right now, but there are discussions on instituting one to ease some of the tax burden that property owners shoulder. Housing in Beavercreek is a little higher than most (with a couple of exceptions) other suburbs in the Dayton OH area (average in the upper 100s). Schools are excellent. Biggest drawback to this area is that if you are not a religious conservative, you are VERY much in the minority. Schools, bookstores, libraries, etc. in this area reflect this on many levels.[read more...]

Superb all-around quality of life - 7/15/2006

We moved here in June 2006 as part of a military change of station. But I'm pleased with how great a place this is on many levels: reasonable housing cost with potential for moderate appreciation, low cost of living, short commute, low to moderate traffic, access to good regional airport (Dayton) and major int'l airport (Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky), four season climate, lots of trees, rolling hills, plenty of precipitation, great shopping, business opportunities galore in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus; nearby professional sports teams (Cincinnati), low crime, good schools, higher education opportunities all over the region ... that's all I can think of for now. It has a few downsides, but I'm finding them manageable: a little bit too much conservatism and religion in the populace, moderate to high income and property taxes ... but as I said, these are manageable.[read more...]
