Grove, OK
Current Resident - 5/5/2009

I first moved here when I was no more than 6wks old. I left when I was five, but visited family often. Five years ago I decided to move back and have enjoyed living close to family in a small town enviroment, however, I wouldn't say that it's all been pleasent. I am the proud mother of four children from the ages of 1yr to 13yrs of age. Public School has been challenging for my oldest and so we have decided to homeschool until highschool while the 8 and 6yr old have enjoyed the two elementary schools, with really good teachers,(overall). The hardest part of living in Grove, OK is that I was raised primarily in Houston,TX and being a city girl I like the convienece of a regular grocery store, not just Wal-Mart, and did I mention that besides a small handful of others my husband is one of the very few Black people living here. I have seen several Hispanic, Latin, Asian, Native American, but very few Black (African American), and having a Black husband and mixed kids hasn't been horrible but it hasn't been easy. This area deffinately needs to come into the 21century in so many ways. It's like the rich people want the small town feel with city convience with out the actually changing anything, and honestly the growth rate is huge ironically because it seems the city constantly fights with it's self and it's citizens over what companies will do the town some good in the way of jobs and such. I don't know who is paying who, but seriously this town caters to the visiters and not the people living here, not cool. I can't wait to move back to Texas, hopefully San Antonio.[read more...]

Diversity on Grand Lake - 10/14/2008

Grove is the heart of Grand Lake o' the Cherokees in NE Oklahoma. NE Ok is similar to the Ozarks in topography. Not anything like western Oklahoma with flat plains. We have hills and trees and lately lots of rain. We are called Green Country with good reason. Grand Lake has 1300 miles of shoreline and it's valuable. Our community has the quality of small town life and a lot of part time lake dwellers from all over the U.S. This area was ranked by Rand McNally as the 4th best place in the country to retire a few years back. Being centrally located in the country makes this a great place for retirement with family all directions. We have great schools and we enjoy our Oklahoma football tradition.[read more...]
