Memories of Commodore, PA - 8/9/2010
I would like to share with you my memories of Commodore, PA. When I was a child - 70 years ago - I spent my summers in Commodore with my grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. It was definitely a mining town. My grandfather was a miner and my uncle was killed in the mines there. The homes were all the same - concrete block, kitchen, living room and two bedrooms upstairs. At one time 12 people lived in my grandparents home. There was no running water and the toilet consisted of an outhouse on the back porch. I remember taking a bath in a large tub in the middle of the kitchen. As primitive as living was in Commodore in those days, as a child I loved being there. There was a creek right across the street from the homes and if we would cross the creek and climb the hill we'd come to a movie theatre and the school. At the back of the house there was a large lawn that led up to the main highway. After crossing the highway we would climb another hill and enter a wooded area. Our
